Ultimatum (Part 1)
Park Jinyoung is a master negotiator. Heβs used to preying on peopleβs weaknesses and manipulating them to get his way. So he canβt understand you; a lawyer who sees the world in black and white, as either good orΒ bad. Conflict is inevitable.Β
But if the two of you can just set aside your differences, perhaps you can perform miracles togetherΒ

You picked at your fingers as you stared nervously at Jinyoung who was sitting across from you. He looked annoyed as if he didnβt want to be here.
βY/N, sweetheart,β Jinyoungβs mother called for you. βWhat do you say?β You gulped nervously unsure of what to say to her. βIβve always treated you as my own daughter,β she reminded.
You looked over at Jinyoung who didnβt bother to say anything. βMrs. Park, is it okay if I have some time to think about this?β
βThereβs no time Y/N,β she practically begged.
βMother stop begging her,β Jinyoung finally spoke. βYou need the money and we have it. How much should I write the check for?β
There were always perks to having a dad working as a driver for Jinyoungβs parents. One of them was being able to go to a private school even when you didnβt have the money or the social class too. Another was everyone thinking you were rich enough to have a driver escort you to school but little did they know the driver was actually your dad. But despite all that, what you absolutely hated the most was being called Jinyoungβs sister. It got so bad that he had to announce to whole school that you were actually his driverβs daughter. In one day, you went from being the most popular girl in school to the girl everyone loved to bully. Jinyoung never bullied you like the others but he also never protected you.
You would think that after all that, you would finally be able to move on from Jinyoung but you never did, not even now, when youβre asked to marry him.
βDo you have any other choice?β Jinyoung asked, leaning forward at the table. βHow else are you going to pay off your fatherβs gambling debt?
He was right. You didnβt have any other choice. Either marry Jinyoung for money or sell your body for money.Β
Jinyoungβs father was in horrible condition after his heart attack and in order for Jinyoung to be eligible to take over his company instead of his older half-brother, Jaebum, he needed to get married.
Jinyoungβs father was always nice to you and your dad which was why it was hard to lie to him.Β
βIβm only agreeing to this because I need the money and your father was always nice to me. I donβt want him to die without seeing you get married.β
βIf that gets you to say yes, then sure - whatever you say.β
You turned to Jinyoungβs mother who was looking at you, hopeful. βOkay Mrs. Park. Iβll marry Jinyoung,β you agreed while nodding your head.
βOuch!β you hissed as you pulled your finger away from underneath the knife.
βYouβre bleeding!β Jinyoungβs mother exclaimed as she brought your finger underneath the faucet to rinse off. βWhat were you thinking about sweetheart?β
βNothing,β you smiled at your mother-in-law, remembering the moments you decided to marry Jinyoung.
You always loved Jinyoung. Everyday your dad drove you, Jinyoung and Jaebum to school. You went to tutoring lessons together. You practically spent every waking hour together. But Jinyoung was always cold to you and no matter how hard you tried to get on his good side, nothing work. You thought maybe, just maybe, things would change once you agreed to marry him - maybe the both of you will learn to love and appreciate each other. But itβs been a year and his same cold behavior hasnβt changed.
βYour relationship with Jinyoung must be getting better I presume?β she asked with a big smile on her face. βYou sure are putting a lot of effort to make him happy on his birthday.β
βHeβs my husband. Iβm supposed to make him happy.β
βI knew youβd make the perfect daughter-in-law. Iβm glad it was you.β
Jinyoung grew up with a sliver spoon in his mouth. He has everything he could ever want. So instead of getting him something he can buy with money, you decided to cook him his favorite meals for his birthday.Β
βDo you think heβll like it?β
βOf course he will honey!β Jinyoungβs mother assured you. βThese were all of his favorite meals growing up. Iβm just afraid heβll be so busy with work that heβll miss dinner.β
βWe talked about it last night. He said heβll come home earlier for dinner,β you said hopeful.Β βIβll just drop off his lunch and come back to make dinner.β
βHi Nayeon, is Jinyoung in a meeting?β you asked his secretary.
βGood afternoon Mrs. Park. Mr. Park is busy with a call right now, can you leave a message?βΒ
βOh I just wanted to drop off his lunch. Can I just go in and leave this on his desk quietly?β you asked making your way towards his office.
βMrs. Park I donβt think thatβs a good idea,β she said quickly stopping you from opening his door.Β βCan you leave a message?β she repeated.
You forced a smile at her,Β βSure, I suppose I shouldnβt disturb him anyways. Can you make sure you get this to him?β
Nayeon nodded before getting back to work. You watched her set the lunch on the side of her table. You were always nice to Nayeon but she always seemed rather cold to you.Β
βThat was quick. Did Jinyoung eat the lunch you made?β Jinyoungβs mother asked once you walked inside the house.Β
βOh no. He was busy so I just left it with his secretary,β you said slightly disappointed.Β
βNonsense, no matter how busy he is, he still needs to eat. Let me call him.β
βItβs really okay mom.β you assured her.Β βIβm sure heβll get to it when he frees up,β you smiled as you made your way to the kitchen to prepare for dinner.
It was already 8pm and Jinyoung was nowhere to be found. The whole family was waiting; his parents, Jaebum and his wife, Chaewon, and your own dad.Β
A couple of months after your marriage, Jinyoungβs fatherβs condition improved significantly. Since he was alive and well, he didnβt need to transition the company to Jaebum or Jinyoung. He remained Chairman, while appointing Jaebum as President and Jinyoung as Vice President. He even appointed Jaebumβs wife, Chaewon as Senior Director of Operations, and yourself as Marketing Director.
βWhatβs taking him so long, Y/N?β Jaebum asked glancing down at his watch for the fifth time tonight.Β βIβm just as busy as him, if not even busier, and even I showed up on time.β
You looked down at your phone to see if Jinyoung responded to any of your calls but nothing.Β βMaybe we should get started,β you suggested.Β βFather, youβre probably hungry,β you said as you turned to Jinyoungβs father.Β
βOkay weβll start without him,β Jinyoungβs father agreed, unhappily. You walked over towards him, helping him push his wheel chair towards the dining table. As the family gathered at the table, the front door opens.Β
You quickly made your way over to Jinyoung.Β βAre you drunk?β you whispered as you smelled the alcohol on him.Β
βI had a couple of drinks,β he managed to get out as you helped him take off his suit.
βDadβs unhappy that youβre late. The whole family is waiting,β you whispered quietly for him to hear only.Β
βShut up. Youβre annoying me,β Jinyoung whispered back, walking towards the table. Hurt by his words, there was nothing you can do or say but keep your head down. You smoothened out his suit and laid it on the couch. Your eyes wandered to the collar of his suit - pink lipstick. You glanced over at Jinyoung who was already sitting by the table.Β βHurry up,β he called for you. You shook the thought of another womanβs lipstick on your husbandβs suit out of your head and walked towards the dining table.
βAlright letβs get started,β Jinyoungβs father announced, sitting at the head of the table. The housekeepers each brought out the dishes you prepared tonight. You watched Jinyoung carefully, observing his reaction on each bite of food he took.Β
βJinyoung, sweetheart. Do you like the food?β Jinyoungβs mother asked.
βIt tastes different,β he commented as he pushed his food around on his plate.
βY/N cooked everything,β his mother revealed. You watched him carefully again, hoping he would say it was tasty but he didnβt say anything. Jinyoungβs mother reached over to your hand, giving it a light squeeze.Β βWhat about lunch?βΒ
βLunch?β he said confused. βOh that thing - it got cold and nasty by the time it got to my desk. I took a bite and lost my appetite.β
You bit your lip, upset that all your hard work went to waste. Your own dad was even more upset for you; seeing how unappreciative Jinyoung was. He was about to speak up, but you grabbed his hand - signaling him to not make a big scene in front of your in-laws.
You forced a smile in front of everyone,Β βThatβs okay. I just need to do a better job next time.β
βI think your food tastes great,β Jaebum compliments, shoving food into his mouth. You didnβt just grow up with Jinyoung. You grew up with Jaebum too and he was always nice to you unlike Jinyoung.Β
βEat more,β you tell him with a smile.Β
You glanced over at Jinyoung frequently throughout dinner, seeing if he ate anymore of the food you made. He didnβt which disappointed you. Was your food really that bad?
βWhy would you waste my time tonight?β Jinyoung asked climbing into the bed.Β
You looked at him through your vanity mirror.Β βWhat do you mean?β
βYou asked me to come home for dinner for what?βΒ
βItβs your birthday. I thought we could celebrate as a family,β you explained, making your way towards the bed you both shared.
βI never celebrate my birthday. You know, why?β he questioned. You shook your head.Β βBecause on my fifth birthday, my dad announced he had another son from another woman and that I had an older brother. He ruined my birthday and you managed to make it worse by inviting him to dinner tonight.β
βIβm sorry I didnβt know,β you apologized.Β
βOf course you didnβt. You donβt know anything,β he spatted.Β βJust stay in your lane - act like a good wife in front of my dad and do your job. Do you see Chaewon taking the day off to celebrate Jaeβs birthday?β he questioned. You shook her head.Β βExactly. What would my father think? Heβll think weβre incompetent.βΒ
You looked down at your lap, picking at your fingers again. You glanced over at Jinyoung who was already settled in bed.
βRemember this is all for show. You donβt need to try so hard.Β I donβt love you. Once I get the company, weβre getting a divorce.β
βRightβ¦β you whispered, settling next to him in bed. You turned your back away from him attempting to hide the tears that were already falling from your eyes.Β

βAnd thatβs all I got for you today, folks,β your professor announced before closing his laptop and ending the slideshow presentation.Β βClass dismissed.β
A low buzz of activity suddenly filled the lecture hall as your fellow classmates began to pack up their bags and then make their way to the door. Once you slipped your laptop into your backpack, you followed them, sidling down your row of seats and loping down the stairs.
Before you reached the door, though, your professor called out your name.Β βOne second,β he said.
Your brow furrowed slightly, and you gripped one strap of your backpack as you turned toward him.Β βYes, sir?β
βAre you still interested in a TA position?β
The wrinkle in your forehead suddenly smoothed out as your eyebrows rose.Β βOh β yes. Yes, absolutely.β
Last week, youβd asked your professor if he would need a teaching assistant for this class next semester. Unfortunately, heβd saidΒ βnoβ at the time, but maybe now heβd changed his mind!Β
