Every Day Chapter 4 Sneak Peek
âI died.â
Remus nearly dropped his wand in surprise.
Not because he actually believed the words or their underlying insanity. As far as he was aware, no spell had the ability to reanimate a corpse, and his nose would have definitely picked up on the cloying scent of recent decay suffusing their shared flat had he been speaking with one, anyway. Â
It was clear to him the phrase was metaphorical in some manner. It just so happened to be the last thing he ever anticipated coming out of his roommateâs mouth, especially when spoken with that same almost whispered reverence heâd heard back in the Potterâs living room a little over a week prior. Â
And that was odd, in its own right, but odder yet that he knew with almost equal certainty that somewhere in their hallowed walls housed the whole, messy truth. Or the truth as Sirius believed it, which was as good as the very same thing.
If it raised far more questions than it did any actual answers, heâd have to wait to ask them a little while longer, the moment to do so sooner ebbing out of reach when he then caught the sound of a door creaking open someplace several yards away and spared a brief glance over the otherâs shoulder in time to watch James stumble through looking about as drained as heâd ever seen him.
Sirius followed his gaze and immediately took off before he had the chance to voice his command to remain put or risk losing something in the process, huffing a sigh out through his nose and stuffing his wand back into his coat pocket with the intention to table to conversation for a time they werenât lingering in polite society.Â
As he would have done from the start had his emotions not gotten the better of him at the worst possible moment.
It wasnât entirely his fault. The week leading up to the full moon was always a rockier period of adjustment while the wolf he kept contained the remainder of the time slowly but surely picked the lock on its cage all the while snarling at him and everyone around it demanding to be set free. Â
That, coupled with the fact heâd been awoken at the arse crack of dawn by a stag zipping into his bedroom to alert him of the situation and request his presence as soon as possible would have put him into a foul mood no matter who he stumbled upon in the halls. It was simply his great misfortune that his mouth had a mind of its own when faced with the opportunity to lash out at the one person who had been causing the rest of him unparalleled grief for weeks on end.
At least now heâd have an excuse to give chase should the idiot attempt to flee after heâd made it perfectly clear he wasnât opposed to the use of force to get his way. Though something told him his roommate was about as relieved by the encounter as he felt in the aftermath still riding high on the burst of adrenaline and the residual fumes of his previous ire.
Hopefully that didnât change any after they heard the news about their friendâs condition. If it did, well. Heâd cross that bridge when it came to it.
