It seemed as though Dani was doomed from the start. He was born and raised an only child, an accident at that. The household was poor, his dad spending most money they made on alcohol and substances. His dad wasn’t just an angry drunk, he was angry all the time. Each waking moment felt like a nightmare, not knowing what would go and set off his dad. Both him and his mom were on receiving ends of his dads anger though Dani, under 10 at the time, tried to take the pain from his mom.
This behavior continued up until Dani was 11.
After a particularly bad night, Dani scattered over the torn up living room to comfort his crying mom. Usually his dad would take his business out to the garage or go for a drive after which gave Dani time to comfort or clean his mom up, but this time he lingered. He saw as Dani tried to cheer her up and he was furious. It started with his dad pushing Dani away from his mom, his tall silhouette towering over Dani’s frame. Just as Dani held his arms up to protect himself, he heard a thud and all movements haltered. As he peeks out from his arms, he saw that the sound he had heard was a book his mom had thrown at his dad to take the attention off of her son.
The next thing Dani remembered was his dads hands around his moms throat, then silence. A long silence as his mom lay still on the living room floor, his dad wearing a stunned expression.
Dani had tried to wake up his mom but his attempts failed. He’d end up calling the cops, his mom being DOA and his dad being sent off to jail. He was sent off to the closest family member which happened to be his grandma on his moms side. Dani continued to live in his grandmas loving home way into his teen years. She’d taught him more than he ever learned from his dad, and comforted him just as much as his mom did.
Everything was great until highschool. His grandma developed cancer his junior year and by the time he was a senior it had spread. Treatments weren’t helping and she ended up passing after his graduation.
Since Dani was her only grandchild and closest thing she had to living family members, he got her will. He used that money to take himself to college and study what his grandma and him had talked about many nights over tea. Psychology. He wanted to learn the reasons people did things. Especially what goes through people like his dads heads.
Present:
Dani is currently in his junior year and doing great. He still struggles with mental health and nightmares induced by the traumatic memories of his childhood.
But luckily, he’s made many great friends along the way to help distract himself. He spends most of his time studying, running track, knitting, or hanging out with friends on campus.
Since sexuality wasn’t even a thought in his childhood home, he didn’t really start questioning or experimenting with his sexuality until he got to college. He came to terms with the fact he was pansexual fairly easily, and he couldn’t be happier with where he was at the moment.
