You hid a smirk, watching as Fangs was lectured by his mother for what was probably the fifth time this week.
“And you guys know what to do if the car breaks down, right?” She asked, arms crossed and a dish towel tossed over her shoulder as she eyed all of you with a stern expression.
“Ditch it and steal someone else’s?” Sweet Pea offered, barking out a laugh when Teresa smacked him with the towel, giving him an unamused look.
“I don’t care how tall you are Sweet Pea, I’ll come up there if I have to,” She threatened, glaring up at him as the rest of you snickered, never too old to find humor in one of your friends getting in trouble.
“We’ll be fine Mrs. Fo- Teresa,” You attempted to soothe, quickly correcting yourself before you got scolded once again, constantly being told to call the woman by her first name.
“Oh I trust you, Y/N,” She muttered, giving you a kind smile before her eyes drifted towards the boys. “Even Toni and Jughead. It’s dumb and dumber I’m worried about.”
She was gesturing to Fangs and Sweet Pea who were both immediately protesting, a smirk gracing her features when her son expressed his disbelief.
“Well we’re all loaded up,” Jughead broke in, slamming the trunk shut and wiping his hands off. “You guys all set?”
Everyone nodded and started heading towards the car, eager to make it to the show you were planning on catching tonight.
“Alright mama,” Fangs announced, jogging up the porch and pressing a kiss against Teresa’s cheek. “We gotta go now, I love you.”
Teresa muttered something in spanish and he laughed, shaking his head as each of you got into the vehicle, calling out your goodbyes to Fangs’ mother.
Toni had already called shotgun -much to Sweet Pea’s dismay- and you sat in the back beside him while Jughead stretched out in the back row, already holding some sort of mystery novel.
As soon as you had pulled onto the main road, Sweet Pea was opening up the window, lips curving into a broad smile.
“Alright motherfuckers!” Sweet Pea shouted, opening up the window and sticking his head out, the rest of you shaking your heads with matching grins. “Road trip!”
“I’m telling you,” Sweet Pea reiterated for the hundredth time, glaring at Jughead like he was the most annoying person alive. “If we just keep going straight and take a left up there we’ll be fine.”
“We might as well just make a U-turn and go back the way we came,” Jughead reasoned, both of them continuing to bicker, oblivious to Toni’s eye rolls and the expression of annoyance on Fangs’ face.
The drive was only meant to be a total of four hours but you somehow lost your way, ending up on a long winding road that was heading in the opposite direction you were meant to go in.
“For fuck’s sake, let’s just put it in the GPS,” You broke in loudly, reaching for the portable device Teresa had propped at the dash, holding onto the back of Fangs’ seat and stretching over his shoulder.
“Y/N,” Fangs groaned, glancing away from the road and taking in your sudden close proximity. “This isn’t safe.”
“Well Sweet Pea and Jughead won’t be safe when I lose my mind and shove them out of the van,” You muttered, quickly sitting back down and typing the destination.
“Alright, looks like both of you are wrong. Take the next right and then merge back onto the highway,” You instructed, peering up from the screen to give Sweet Pea and Jughead a snarky look.
“Fucking idiots,” Fangs muttered, sounding thoroughly amused as Toni snickered, still quietly taking in all the chaos from the passenger seat.
“Feel free to interject anytime Toni,” You called out to the pink haired girl, laughing brightly when she threw a gummy bear at you.
“Hey I’m just here to eat my snacks and play some music,” She defended, smirking as she gestured to the aux cord, still plugged in her phone after an hour of driving.
“Yeah playing music only you like,” Sweet Pea whined, adjusting his long legs for the millionth time, looking bitter until she handed him the bag of candy.
“Next time we stop I’m taking shotgun.”
When you stopped for gas Fangs convinced Sweet Pea to take over driving and joined you in the backseat. You were all eager to get to the city, wondering if you’d make it to the concert in time after wasting so much time earlier.
“This is going to be so good,” Toni said from the front, turning around in her seat to face you with an excited grin. “Do you think we’ll be able to get to the front?”
“You and I, maybe. Sweet Pea could be way in the back and he’d still see fine,” You pointed out absentmindedly, giggling when Fangs stopped scrolling through his phone and showed you a random picture of a dog.
“This is our first concert in ages, I don’t even care where we stand,” Sweet Pea interjected with a smirk, glancing away from the road to wiggle his eyebrows at all you.
“You have the tickets, right Y/N?” Jughead asked, poking his head out from behind you and Fangs, still sprawled out in the backseat.
“In my backpack,” You reassured, pausing when you recognized the song Toni had just started playing. “Fuck yes T!”
“Coming out of my cage and I been doing just fine!” You and Toni immediately shouted, Fangs glancing up from his phone to laugh at you, the familiar song building up as Toni increased the volume.
“Gotta gotta be down because I want it all.”
Even Sweet Pea joined in, thrumming his hands against the steering wheel erratically, a smirk gracing his features as you all shouted the words. “It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this?”
You turned around in your seat, rising onto your knees so you could point at Jughead dramatically, laughing halfway through when he joined in with a dramatically low voice. “It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss!”
All of you were smiling broadly as you sang in sync, terribly out of tune voices trying to harmonize with each other, hysterical laughter filling the space of the van. When you reached the chorus none of you held back, Toni playing the air guitar while you and Fangs head banged, your hair whipping around wildly.
“Jealousy, turning saints into the sea, swimming through sick lullabies, choking on your alibis! But it’s just the price I pay, destiny is calling me. Open up my eager eyes, cause I’m Mr. Brightside!”
You clutched onto Toni’s hand, laughing breathlessly as the five of you raced down the street towards the venue, hoping to get in before the band went on.
There wasn’t a line and in a matter of minutes you all wore matching stamps on your hand, entering the crowded room and taking in the electric atmosphere with matching smiles of excitement.
The space was small and hazy, a neon red glow lighting up the entire room, filled completely various kinds of people, everyone talking amongst themselves as they waited for the band to get onto the stage.
As Toni started weaving through little gaps, hoping to get all of you somewhere in the center, you turned backwards and clutched onto Fangs’ hand. You gave him a nervous grin when he squeezed your hand gently and turned backwards to grab onto Sweet Pea, the taller boy merely rolling his eyes and grabbing onto Jughead’s jacket, none of you wanting to get seperated in the crowd.
It wasn’t hard to find a decent spot, most people slightly intimidated by the leather jackets and tattoos donned by all of you, Sweet Pea shooting glares at anyone that got a little too pushy around you or Toni.
When the lights suddenly turned off the atmosphere changed completely; everyone dropped their conversations and starting cheering in anticipation, a glorious feeling of suspense setting over you.
You were still holding onto Fangs’ hand and you turned to face him, practically bouncing on the spot as you grinned in excitement, unable to see him in the dark but utterly joyful when he squeezed your hand as if he was sharing in your excitement.
“Hello everyone!” The lead singer greeted, the room filled with everyones cheers and clapping. “Let’s have a good fucking night, yeah?!”
Halfway through the first song you looked around at your friends, feeling warm and thankful and filled to the brim with love, watching all of them laugh and dance along to the music.
It was a night away from your typical life, a night away from the stress of living on the Southside and all the grief you got from the Northside. The music was too loud and your feelings were too bright for anything else to matter, and you danced your heart out, a smile on your face through the entire set.
“And that guitar solo?” Fangs recalled, shaking his head as if he couldn’t believe it, reaching for more fries at the center of the table. “God that was insane.”
You were all at some random 24 hour diner you had found on the next street, faces shining from hours of dancing and singing along to one of your favorite bands. You had all shed your jackets, still cooling off and filling yourselves up with fast food before the four hour drive home.
“Tonight was so fun,” Toni chimed in, taking a large drink of her milkshake that she already claimed wasn’t as good as Pop’s. “Seriously, we need to do this more often.”
“Yeah, thanks for getting us all tickets, Y/N,” Jughead stated with his typical small smirk, finishing off his burger. “I think it’s safe to say we all needed this.”
Everyone chimed in with thank you’s and Sweet Pea leaned across the table, planting a sloppy kiss against your cheek that made you scrunch your face up in mock disgust.
Fangs snickered from beside you when you wiped your cheek dramatically, taking a sip of your drink with a sweet smile. “No problem guys. It’s good to get out of town every once in a while, yeah?”
Everyone voiced words of agreement and you sighed in contentment, gazing out of the diners window and taking in the city in front of you, tall buildings towering and people still walking around the streets. It was a nice reminder that you were more than glad to give your friends; that life didn’t begin and end in Riverdale. All of you could escape once school was over, no matter how differently it felt at times.
Eventually you all split the bill and headed out, throwing your jackets back on and getting into the cold night air.
Sweet Pea tossed the keys to Fangs and he caught them easily, turning to look at the rest of you over his shoulder. “Y/N gets shotgun, I’m not down to get lost again.”
You smirked and gave Sweet Pea and Jughead a haughty look, happily skipping to the other side of the van and hopping into the passenger seat, oblivious to the the way Fangs watched and chuckled quietly to himself.
As you got back onto the road, Fangs carefully maneuvering the van through the busy city streets and back towards the highway, everyone melted into their own conversations. Jughead and Toni discussed Betty’s upcoming birthday while Sweet Pea took up the back row, peering out the window and chiming in every so often.
You were content to sit sideways, facing Fangs and murmuring directions to him until he took the ramp leading to the highway. When everyones conversations died down, exhaustion from the long day taking over, you plugged your phone in and started playing a mellow playlist, the sounds of Cigarettes After Sex resonating through the vehicle.
By the time you were 2 hours through the drive, still discussing random things with Fangs, you realized how quiet everyone else was. Turning around in your seat, a smile of amusement graced your features when you saw Toni and Jughead both passed out, leaning against opposite windows and their legs tangled up in the middle.
All you could see from the back row was the top of Sweet Pea’s head, his arms thrown over his face and quiet snores coming from him. You pulled out your phone and took a photo of all of them, giggling quietly.
“They all passed out?” Fangs asked softly, glancing in the mirror, a hint of a smile on his lips.
“Yep,” You answered, posting the photo with a mischievous smirk, typing out the caption. All wiped out after a night of dancing.
“Of course,” Fangs snorted, shaking his head. “And Pea wanted to drive back.”
You chuckled softly, pausing halfway as a yawn took over. “It was a lot of excitement for one night.”
“You tired?” Fangs asked, quirking a brow at you, his fingers tapping against the steering wheel rhymically. “You can crash if you want, I don’t mind.”
“What? No, what kind of passenger would I be if I fell asleep and let you drive for-” You paused and checked the clock, noting that it was past midnight. “Two more hours.”
Fangs chuckled, shaking his head at you. “At least get comfortable, Y/N. Here,” He murmured, tapping his thighs and smiling in contentment when you stretched your legs out over his lap, still leaving enough room for him to steer.
He settled one of his large hands over your calf and the feeling of warmth made your stomach twist in a wonderful way, a feeling that always bloomed when Fangs was even slightly affectionate towards you.
“Did you have fun tonight?” You inquired gently, not wanting to wake up any of the others or disturb the atmosphere in the vehicle; the lights of the highway leaving a glow in all the darkness, the singer still crooning sweetly in the background.
“Yeah of course,” Fangs murmured, just as soft and reluctant to break the ambience. “I always have fun with you.”
His thumb brushing against your calf gently made you shiver delightfully and for a moment you forgot what he said, blinking when he continued speaking.
“I’m glad you convinced all of us to drive out,” Fangs confided. “It’s so easy to feel trapped in that town, you know? Especially on the Southside. I always end up feeling like…” He trailed off and cleared his throat.
Your gaze didn’t waver; you were hanging onto his words, eyes roaming over his features. “It’s just easy to feel like we can’t go anywhere else. Like we can’t be more than who we are right now.”
“I’m pretty fond of who you are right now,” You responded, answering the smile he gave you with one of your own. “And I know the feeling. But you can go wherever you want, Fangs. I have faith in you.”
He was quiet for a moment, before finding the response he was looking for, emphasized with a squeeze to your leg. “You know I love you, right? You always say the right thing, Y/N, I swear.”
You laughed softly. “It’s my superpower. I love you too, Fangs.”
A sudden loud snore made both of you glance up in surprise, and you both burst into laughter when you realized it was just Sweet Pea.
Jughead started to stir and you watched from your position as he sat up, adjusting his hat and glancing backwards at the still loudly slumbering serpent, a disturbed look gracing his features. “Are we there yet?”
You and Fangs were still laughing and you glanced at the clock, “Still got an hour to go, Jones.”
Jughead grumbled and curled back up against the window. You looked around the van, and even with how tired you were, your happiness overshadowed all of it. Your friends sleeping soundly, Fangs humming to the music softly, one hand on the steering wheel while the other one rested on your legs, turning to give you a smile when he took notice of your thoughtful gaze.
You were filled with love for the people around you. And in that moment, there was nowhere else you would rather be.
