3 Rules When Hanging Art Above Your Sofa

 Not sure how you should style the wall behind your sofa? Here are 3 rules that will help you make the right choice:

 1.    Don’t hang up your art/pictures too high above your sofa

Hanging up your art too high makes everything seem out of place and pulls the attention away from your beautiful art piece and sofa. The simplest way to make sure your art is hanging in the correct place is by dividing the wall into four horizontal lines. You should hang your art at the height of the third line from the bottom.

2.    The art should be almost the length of your sofa

If you want to make an impression, your art should be almost the same size as your sofa. With larger pieces of furniture, the art above it should be at least one third to two thirds of the width of the piece itself. Hanging up art that is too small can create too much emptiness.

 3.    The art does not necessarily need to match the sofa

Mix and match pieces to create something unusual and edgy. You can even mix 2D and 3D, like wood work to create a modern look. It is important, however, if you decide to hang up multiple pieces, to lay them out on the floor and see what matches well before hanging them up.

Styling Your Sofa

 Whether the colour of your sofa is neutral or vivid, we have the best tips to help you style your sofa with throw pillows. Follow these steps for great results:

 1.     Layer two or three pillows in the corners of your sofa. Start with a bigger pillow at the back and gradually decrease the size. Remember, if you have too many big pillows it could dwarf your sofa, however, having only small cushions can make your sofa look empty.

2.     Mix pillows that have different textures such as wool, leather and velvet to add some liveliness. You can mix different styles too, using one with an organic print and another with lines.

3.     Stylists usually start with a plain pillow at the back to act as a type of canvas and add on pillows with patterns towards the front.

4.     The traditional setting is to match your pillows on both sides of the sofa, however, you can mix it up.

5.     Usually on a neutral sofa you’d start with a darker, more radiant coloured pillow to break things up and set the tone. On a coloured/vivid sofa you would begin with a lighter or neutral colour, again to set off from the colour of your sofa.

Make Your Sofa Last

 We know how difficult it can be to make your beautiful sofa look as good as new when you have young kids, pets or are trying to avoid the occasional red wine spill. That is why we have some perfect solutions for keeping both your fabric or leather sofa clean with products you probably already have at home.

 Fabric Sofa

 1.    When you first get your sofa, try spraying it with a stain repellent, suitable for your type of fabric, such as Scotch Gard. Reapply the stain repellent every 6 to 12 months.

2.    If you have had your sofa for longer and are battling with stains you can follow the next easy steps:

·      Mix a cup of laundry detergent into a big bowl and top it up with water or put this solution in a spray bottle.

·      Soak a dry sponge into the solution and start covering all areas of your sofa using circular motions.

·      Then soak a microfiber cloth into water and scrub your sofa.

·      In order to make sure the fabric stays soft you could cover a microfiber cloth in fabric softener (making sure that the cloth isn’t dripping with fabric softener) and gently press the cloth down onto the sofa.

·      Leave overnight to dry.

  Leather Sofa

 1.     To keep your sofa in a good condition you have to wipe off dust with a damp cloth regularly and not use your vacuum on the sofa since this could damage it. The best way to keep it looking new is by getting a leather care kit so that you can keep the leather conditioned as well. However, if you just wish to clean it, try out method two.

2.     The following way of cleaning is quite safe but won’t restore discoloration in the leather. Please try this method out first on a small spot at the back of your sofa to make sure this works for you.

·      Buy a bar of Johnson’s Baby Soap and soak a microfiber cloth in a bowl of hot water.

·      Scrub the wet microfiber cloth against the bar of soap and then wipe all areas of your sofa with the cloth in circular motions. Rinse the cloth out and repeat as you make your way across the sofa.

·      Use a towel to dry off the sofa and make sure there isn’t any moisture left.
