I saw a bump on the back of someone's clothes today and immediately assumed it was a mic pack. For an entire hour. That's how long it took me to remember that people don't just walk around wearing mic packs. It was just the elastic of her top fitting weird. I'm in too deep.
Starting tmnt with Rise is hard. I got into Rise first and then branched out from there. Don't get me wrong, I love the other iterations, but like, what do you mean Donnie isn't like that. WHAT DO YOU MEAN APRIL ISN'T LIKE THAT.
In my head, Donnie built the attachment for someone to ride on his shell not only for April, but for Mikey. I like to think that it's basically a tradition in the rise household that the younger brothers climb on the older brothers. They all climb on Raph and Mikey will climb on Leo or Donnie. Or he used to. Donnie's shell just isn't very good for climbing (too flat and not a lot of great grip, Mikey would fall or slide off.) Plus Donnie doesn't love touch all the time anyways, so he just stopped at some point. Donnie felt left out so he built the attachment for his shell. And then was embarrassed and never explained why he added it, so now April is primary the one who uses it.
Rise Splinter's Training Style
I've seen a lot of talk about the different Splinters training styles and how the Rise turtles (for the most part) weren't properly, formally trained. However, with Rise's added Lou Jitsu backstory, this kinda makes sense to me.
I have a friend who's a martial arts instructor and they were asked if they'd win a street fight with all their fancy moves. They laughed and said most martial arts only really work when the opponent agrees to fight in the same martial art.
To be fair, he clearly didn't train them that much compared to the other Splinters, but let's pretend for a second he was more involved. The reason Rise Splinter doesn't teach his sons as much traditional ninjitsu, is that all of that traditional stuff was not helpful in the Battle Nexus. I find it really unlikely that Yokai have the same fighting styles we do. In battles like this, his opponents are going to pull out all sorts of dirty moves I'm sure. For Splinter, the forms and being able to fight were helpful and what helped him win, but at the end of the day they were fighting to live.
The face of a man who just wants to throw a punch and go home.
Him brushing of a lot of his own formal training when he was younger plus a lot of his practice being Hollywood fight scenes are definitely influencing this too. This man has two modes and they are "screw it, win the fight" and "how much flair can I put in this one kick for the fans" and no in-between.
