@thornpr1nc3ss Zelda was painfully too aware and afraid of standing out, even if much of the gown she donned was obscured by the long, dark cloak she wore. Regardless, she was bound to catch a couple of eyes, even when the smallest sway of her head would reveal her pointy ears. When she thought she was tucked away, taking a brief rest at a tavern before she'd continue her expedition, someone had found her. Immediately, she tensed up first to assume the worst. But, seeing a man before her introduce himself, she calmed down, assuring her tense self that she was in no imminent danger, yet. "Zelda," she began, dropping the title mainly out of her own curiosity. She wasn't in Hyrule anymore, so would it truly matter how she chose to introduce herself? "I'm... just visiting. I hope it's alright that I'm here, Balthus."
Zelda, huh? That name felt oddly familiar; he might have heard it in passing during his mercenary days, but as hard as he tried, he just couldn't place the context.
Oh well, surely it will come back to him at some point.
"Hm? Why wouldn't it be? Doesn't look like you wanna cause any trouble." The burly man remarked, hands on his hips as he gave a quick glance at the girl's sharp ears.
Quite a striking feature, they reminded Balthus of the statues of the Goddess in Fódlan's chapels. He always thought that physical detail was mostly done to highlight how otherworldly the Goddess was. But no, apparently, there are people who just look like that. "No worries, ma'am. Fódlan isn't exactly welcoming right now, but ya got a friend in me!"
The man leaned against the table next to where she was sitting down, arms crossed, shoulders relaxed. "Those are some cool ears there! Does everyone in your country have ears like that? Or is it a Zelda-original?"
Balthus didn't mean to be prying. He was merely curious.
The lady fascinated him due to her likeness to the Goddess. Plus, being around the lady made it harder for some tavern drunk to bother her. It was so obvious that she was out of her element; there was no way he would let the poor girl roam around without some backup.
the title of "grappling king" was certainly well earned; fenris was in an equal state of weariness, breathing deep behind his mask. had it not been for the rise and fall of his chest, one might have assumed he wasn't as affected. alas.
those of the abyss had an air of similarity between the people fenris' clan would linger around and do dealings with. the unwanted, the ignoble, cutpurses and cutthroats... it probably wasn't that much of a stretch to say that without yuri leading them, those who hid in the underbelly of garreg mach would have been much less organized - let alone civilized. the big bruiser smiled wide and addressed him with familiarity. as was his way, balthus was just... so boisterous.
they could have carried on sparring (fenris could see the glint of appraisal in balthus' eyes - he was ready for it) but they'd already done enough damage. perhaps not to themselves, but the abysswalkers seemed to tire of watching them. fenris cupped his fist and gave a polite half bow, acknowledging the other's prowess.
without much decorum, balthus has already cornered him at one point in order to bask in comradery as an outsider. how far his knowledge went however. . . fenris still wasn't entirely certain. his questions were probing and the assassin did not take them for face value friendly banter. nevertheless, he gave a small shake of his head. his regimen wasn't anything like that of a nobles - it wasn't like that of your typical fodlan commoner's either. without the spectacle of two well trained martial artists to entertain them, those that had stopped to watch finally began to amble off.
some of his bandages had loosened during their spar. though he slid away, off to the side and further into the shadows (away from those that lingered nearby) fenris didn't completely run off like he usually would. not fully a concession to balthus' company, but a temporary tolerance; a reward, perhaps, for having come to a draw. outer coat removed, he pushed the sleeves of his turtleneck further up his arms and began to unwind the wrappings there.
The mercenary could see the other was clearly not much in the mood for some 'get to know each other' convo. Or rather, he didn't believe Balthus enough to even give him some basic answers.
Eh, Balthus didn't take that personally. Everyone had their own secrets, and to be fair, the bigger male might have gotten a bit pushy with his questions. He didn't regret asking them, but he could see someone so guarded like Fenris just being offput by it.
Balthus was just about to put his good ol' white jacket on, until he noticed the other basically trying to sneak away while he was distracted. Fenris had always been sort of a guarded dude—the type of person who didn't really like interacting with other people, be it out of shyness, or having something to hide.
But stuff like that never deterred someone like Balthus. If the master of stinging remarks Hapi were able to warm up to him, then surely the boy could too.
"Hey, where ya goin'? We haven't had our post-spar meal yet," he spoke, taking a few steps toward the other, but still leaving enough space for him to walk away from the convo. Balthus wanted to know the kid, not force him to speak up. "Aaaah, I see... Out of money, huh? I get you, money problems are basically my real Crest."
"I got an idea, why don't I treat you to a nice meal? Consider it a payment for givin' me one hell of a fight." That was a genuine offer out of the King of Grappling, this was probably the funnest afternoon he ever got to spend in Garreg Mach, it was definitely worth paying for lunch. "C'moooon, even the quiet ones get hungry!"
HOW PURE ARE YOU?
"HAH! Can't argue with that!"
@vvindicated
Now THIS is what Balthus call a brawl!
The bigger man was just starting to catch his breath back again while on his right knee, his body covered in bruises and scratches. Balthus hadn't had a fight this good in a while.
This excitement made his smile get even wider, his eyes fixed upon the broody young man before him. He was aware that Fenris had some skill, but he didn't know the extent of it. This went beyond formal training.
No no, this kid had experience.
"Phew, gotta tell ya Fen. I knew you were tough, but this? This is on a whole 'nother level!" The man finally got to his feet, massaging his right shoulder as he rolled his arm.
His eyes never left the other. Balthus knew that, if he shifted his gaze once, the other could close the distance for a quick punch. "Did you receive special trainin'? No way you can do all that with just regular nobility weightliftin'"

It had been quite some time since Dimitri had last ventured into the Abyss. He rarely came these days; the winding, catacombs had a rather unfortunate habit of disorienting his already poor sense of direction, often leaving him wandering for hours before he could find his way back. More than once, he had been forced to rely upon the kindness of one of the Ashen Wolves to guide him through the maze and escort him safely back to the Officer’s Academy. As Dimitri made his way through the dimly lit passageways, a tall shadow gradually emerged before him. His steps slowed as the silhouette gave way to a familiar face.
“Indeed, it has. You ought to venture to the surface more often. I cannot imagine that remaining confined down here, deprived of sunlight for such lengths of time can be particularly good for one’s health.”
The large man got a big smile on his face as he gazed upon a sight rarer in the Abyss than sunlight: the most prestigious noble in all of Fódlan, Dimitri Blaiddyd.
"What, and leave all of this behind?" He raised his arms, signaling the entire Abyss. In the eyes of a regular person, this place was a pigsty, a shameful wound that Garreg Mach carried to hide its most questionable elements. But for Balthus, this place was the synonym of freedom. "I'm a man of the Goddess, don't get me wrong. But I'd rather celebrate her with ale than with prayer!"
He lowered his arms, putting his hands on his hips as his gaze fixed back on the rather proper and polite young man. "I'm more curious as to what you're doin' here. No offense, pal, but this place doesn't look like your scene."
His lips formed a thin line, but his eyes can't help following the way Balthus' muscles move when he bounced them. One of his eyes started feeling itchy. Last he remembered, this is a school and not a circus. ... @azurebeast @chevaliergambler
Dimitri brought a hand over his mouth, both to conceal his surprise and to hide the blush steadily creeping across his cheeks, the warmth spreading all the way to the tips of his ears. Was it unbecoming of a prince to be so thoroughly flustered by a half dressed man? Perhaps it was. But could anyone truly fault him? Claude’s strange, boisterous tormentor was, quite unfortunately, very attractive.
“Balthus, you must remember that Garreg Mach is a rather conservative place. As much as I admire your enthusiasm, I fear this is hardly the most suitable setting in which to display your… considerable physique.”
"Nowhere's more suitable than the here and now, my friend! If my colleagues want to stare at my gains, I won't deny them the satisfaction, it would be cruel! Touchin' will cost ya though!"
"OOoooooh, is that what this is all about? Ya guys wanna ogle at my pecs? Well, get yourselves an eyeful my friends! It's an one-man show over here! C'mon, don't be shy!"

“I do not intentionally break things, but yes… I must admit, there is something rather cathartic about it. I would be more than happy to have you join me for a spar sometime—or accompany me on a mission beyond the monastery, should you care to purge a few demonic beasts together.”
"HAHAH! That's what I'm talkin' about, been lookin' forward to seein' The Boar Prince in action! Though, are you sure you can't take on the King of Grappling? Wouldn't wanna cripple the future king of Fódlan n' all!" Though Balthus had the utmost confidence in his skills, he couldn't help but to wonder if he was actually outmatched this time.
The Boar Prince, the strongest man in Fódlan; ooooh man, just thinking about it set the Grappler's heart on fire.
He spat out his drink upon seeing Balthus walking in. Claude closed his eyes letting Hilda's loud voice take over his mind instead. No one is trying to date your mother. No one is trying to date your mother, he told himself. This is all just a bad dream. Balthus is normal, see? He's gone and talked to some other... members of the monastery. He's totally normal.
"Hey Claude! Don't spit out a good drink like that, man! Such a waste." He put his hand on his hip shaking his head disapprovingly. If there's one thing sadder than having no one to grapple, is having drinks spilled. "Anyway, about your mother..."
