MORGAN ST, CHICAGO IL 60607 *wheelchair accessible* *still a sober space* $10-20 Sliding Scale donation, no one turned away for lack of funds Ⓐ ______________________________________________ ☆☆☆ Light food served; first come, first serve! ☆☆☆ 15+ rad orgs, projects, distros & artists tabling all day! ☆☆☆ GlitterGuts Photo Booth!! ☆☆☆ Childcare available, please see a collective member at the front table! —– WORKSHOPS —– 1:00PM – 2:30PM: ~choose your own adventure~ “Our Problem, Our Responsibility: Talking about Being White Queers in Punk” with Sari of Hoax Zine Touted as being a home for society’s rejects, outcasts, and ‘alternative’ political stances, punk unfortunately ends up reinforcing oppressive mindsets and ideals by setting up numerous unwritten rules for dress, behavior, personal choices, identifications, and so much more. This workshop is intended for white queers and aims to help participants direct conscious attention to the nuances of being a white queer person in the punk community, the ways in which we are already welcomed into and lionized within punk for being white, and how we can talk about our experiences with oppression without reinforcing homonationalism or further marginalizing POCs in the punk scene. We will discuss unwritten punk rules with special focus on: raced and gendered expectations; femmephobia, girl hate, and trans/misogyny; punk’s demographics; creative capitalism and participation standards; white masculinity and normalized physical assault; issues of “purity”; and ways we can incite positive change in the scene. Participants will be split into small groups with provided worksheets. * or * “Introduction to Herbalism” with Danielle Wordelman Learn the basics of how to grow and use herbs for medicinal purposes to create more magic in your life in this workshop! We will talk about ways we use self-care tools and brainstorm ways we can heal individually and as a community. Included will be a short zine about herbs and a tea blending demonstration where you can make a custom tea blend from organic herbs. Please bring a clean glass jar if you are interested in making a tea, I will do my best to provide some as well if you can’t/forget. 2:45PM - 4:15PM: “Deconstructing Anti-Blackness” with Monika of Black & Brown Punk Show Collective What is anti blackness and how does it work within our scene? From cultural appropriation, micro aggressions - anti blackness is more prevalent than ever, though is not discussed often. This workshop aims to dispel myths and discuss the effects of anti black racism in radical circles. 2ND ANNUAL “FUCK LOVE LET’S POGO” ROCK LOTTO WAS SICK AS FUCK

like last year, this year was organized by Da Bell Of Da Ball.  Each band was created randomly during a drawing about a month ago. 7 bands in total spent this past month writing songs and practicing them.  They all played tonight for the first time and they all ruled!! None of them announced their names ahead of time, so I had to catch their names over the microphone. If I heard correctly the 7 bands were:

-Honey Bunches Of Goats

-Chlorine

-Ghost Weed

-Planet Of The Vapes

-Death Vision

-Sketch-a-bella

-Rude Dudes

Every band killed it and I really hope some of them pull a Strange Magic/Sputter and continue to be a band. If anyone took pictures put them on the internet so I can re-blob them here. What a great night. Rock Lotto shows are actually so much fun.

Oh also the night closed out with a very energetic cover of X-Ray Spex’ Oh bondage!  It was the perfect ending to a perfect punk show. Sure, life sucks shit and nothing makes sense right now but punk rules.  Winter is going to be over before we know it, meaning touring season is going to start up soon. Meaning we are going to be overwhelmed with shows here in Chicago. Meaning I need to get my life together so I can post all of them on here so you jerks can come out to them.

I haven’t updated this bad boy in a while. Life is happening at a speed that I can’t keep up with and in ways that I don’t like. “Times” are inherently rough and there’s no escaping it, but when the times get rougher than they already are the only thing that could make it worse is this fucking shit hole hellscape that we call the internet. So I have been staying far far away.

But the only thing that makes sense in the whole world is angry music. So I am going to try and stomach the dip shits and fucking bullies and mean people that exist on the internet so I can keep you all updated on upcoming shows because literally the only thing that makes sense is a song that sounds like the inside of my brain.

The Valanteens, Distract, and HYPE BAND are all on a show togeher

There is this kid. Let’s say his name is HYPE BABY. 2 years ago he was a  skin head. Before that he was a super mysterious guy. Now flash forward to the modern day. He is at a punk gig sitting in the corner of the backyard.

He is at said show in a very dirty CULO shirt secret sipping on a bottle of King Cobra. The shirt was once white but now it is the color of tea except for the one spot that looks like a blood stain. He has on ripped up black pants with oversized combat boots. On his left hand he has a studded fingerless leather glove. All night he has been sitting in the backyard going back and fourth between asking where he can score poppers and telling stories of the sick punk rock fest he had gone to last spring. At that fest he saw a reunited band play one last time where he got blood on his shirt… Finally the blood stains make sense. He flips through a distro. Pulls out a record to see which pressing it is. Turns out it’s a second press. He laughs and puts the record back into the distro. He had bought the first press of that record off discogs a few months ago, or so he says to anyone willing to listen.

The talking doesn’t seem to stop. On top of the stories of punk fests of the past he is still chilling in the backyard talking about how modern day punk rock sucks right now and nothing is good. Everyband is just a rip off of Minor Threat and it’s just not like it was in the 80’s. Meanwhile, not but 20 feet from him DISTRACT is tearing up the basement playing some of the most passionate and GENUINE music ever created. 15 to 20 kids are pogoing and screaming along while everyone else bobs their head to the music with the biggest smile on their face. After DISTRACT is done there is only one band left on the show, the hyped touring band from the east coast. Once the HYPE BAND starts to play the hype baby decides it’s finally time to head inside. He moshes his way into the basement and tears it up.  

Later that night I heard him give a recap of how cool his moshing was as he highfived his glue buddy

I am on a very anti hype kick right now. Often times I feel that hype bands get hyped because of who is in the band. More often than not hype bands are made up of straight white dudes who have already been in a million bands.* It seems that the people who are prioritized the most in punk are people who are incredibly privileged. The punks who get hyped are the same people who already are given the most amount of visibility and attention by normal ass society. Maybe that’s because  punk is not a counter culture. It’s not a threat. It’s just a sub culture. A lil mini version of the real world.

I understand that hype is actually super complicated. Sometimes hype bands have worked their asses off for years and toured endlessly to deserve that hype. That’s valid. Sometimes bands get hyped because the identities that make up the band are severely under-represented within the punk scene and people are ecstatic to finally see themselves represented up onstage. That is obviously incredibly valid. I understand that sometimes bands are just really fucking good and everyone loves them.

What I am talking about with this post is hype babies. The type of people who only like the most popular bands. The type of people who wear a punk shirt they bought on ebay for 25 dollars and name drop hype punks the whole entire time they are at a show. The type of person who sits outside during a fucking DISTRACT set because they had never heard of them before. If it is true that  bands who are most commonly hyped are made up of cis straight dudes, then it makes sense that hype babies make many people feel completely invalid and ignored because they only pay attention to/validate the dudes. Which is why I am on an anti-hype kick

I get it, you like what you like. It’s entirely possible that you actually only happen to like bands that are getting hyped. However that is very unlikely. I wish that people would push themselves more. Challenge themselves more to actually think outside the box.

*this is being said by a dude. A person who has been in a million bands. The current band I am in is getting obnoxious attention because we are ex members of hype bands. I just want to aknowledge my role in punk and understand the privilege I have received as a dude in punk who has been playing in bands for years and years now. I have benefited massivly from punks stupid ass bullshit. I’m sure that even in running this blog I have accidentally upheld punks stupid ass bullshit and didn’t post about bands that deserve to be posted about.I want to challenge myself and others to think critically of punk. Question their own tastes. Challenge what they like. Question what they like and why they like it and see if maybe they are acting like “they do”. I know I have acted like one of them in the past. Which is not okay. Anti hype. Anti Hype babies. Anti society
