Growing up Avery had a hard time. She grew up in a single parent household with a twin sister who was verbally, physical and mentally abusive . She was physically, mentally and verbally, emotionally abused by her father on top of her sister. It's not something she talks about much, but she loves to joke about it if the time is right. Humor is her way of coping. Growing up she was forced to go see this man every few week and lived with her sister every day. This could be the reason why her only dream was to help people, because she could never help herself. which why she went into customer service as soon as she was old enough to get a call center job. It just wasn’t scratching the itch. Growing up in Chicago wasn’t alway easy, as anyone would say. Avery grew up in Humboldt park. They were living paycheck to pay check with always talking about moving away from Chicago to some place cheaper but it never happened. She helped support her mom till she retired and moved down south with her sister. She wasn’t the most thrilled when her daughter told her that she applied to the fire academy.
Emery grew up in a different area of the city known as Wicker park. She lived with her mom and dad, till they got a divorce and well things kinda went down hill from that. Emery wanted to help people as well. She worked at a nursing home for a couple years, but it wasn’t something that she wanted to do forever. Her grandfather was a state trooper which is what really pushed her to join the force. Instead of being a trooper she applied at the police academy. Her mother had raised her past the divorce after everything that happened. She could tell you more about her past, there is a maybe kidnapping, verbal abuse. Other things that came into play. Emery mom wasn’t really sure how to feel about her applying to the police academy.
How the two met well it kinda just happened one day and they just kinda clicked. They became friends and have been friends for years. So close that they started hanging out weekly, doing all the high school stuff. Emery’s mother worked for the humble school system. So Emery and her brother just rode with her every day to make it to the high school which is where they both went. They grew closer and just became best friends.
Today, the two moved out together into an apartment in Wicker Park. The Two bedrooms apartment was kinda Small only about 800 square feet. The most important thing to them is that they were close to their mothers. Another really important thing to them was that they were there for their nieces and nephews.
Emery Applied for the police academy the same day that Avery signed up and applied for the fire academy. It took awhile. It was about six months before Emery got to start at the police academy. It wasn’t for awhile after that, when Avery started at the fire academy.
Emery Spent little time on the beat, before a new unit started and she was pulled up to the intelligence unit. They needed a younger face, a new face that hasn’t been seen under cover before. She was excited for the new experience. She was in the unit with a bunch of other people. Kevin Atwater, Jay Halstead, Adam Ruzeck, Erin Lindsey, Antonio Dawson, as well as Sargent Hank Voight.
Avery was still working at her shitty call center job. Getting yelled at. Getting told off and personally attacked daily. Seeing her best friend live her dream was not the easiest. She finished work at about 8pm, Emery was still off at a case so she didn’t find the need to go home to a quiet house and went to the bar near the house, it was about a mile from the house.
Few drinks later Avery was to drunk to drive and wasn’t about to walk home, so she ordered another. She didn’t care her day off was tomorrow and it was one of the worst days she had ever had .
Emery tried to call Avery again and sighed heavily and pulled up find my friends “Jay can we go check on my friend on our way?”
“sure? What’s up?” Jay wondered asking her as he made a turn
“she had a bad day at work, at least I assume from her string of AHHHHH text messages, fuck this job sort of stuff, and now she isn’t answering my texts.. and there is a good chance she went to the bar and is to drunk to drive home. Likely she is at the one near our house.. but she won’t make it home if she walks” Emery just told him the whole truth there was no point in hiding stuff from her partner
“Of course” Jay went to the bar that Emery told him about. Emery walks into the bar with Jay behind her.
Avery was sitting at the bar talking to a guy that was a complete creep, who was way to interested in her. Emery knew that Avery wasn’t a light weight. She could hold em down and drink anyone under the table.
Avery looked over at the door when her friend came in “Emerrrryryryyryy” Avery said as she got up from the stool and almost fell over
“How many have you had?” Emery asked concerned not really sure she has seen her friend like this before
Avery holds up a bunch of fingers, “this many” She replied
“Come on let's get you home, jay will you take her to the car?” Emery asked eyeing the guy.
‘Uh sure.. Avery right? Come on let's go out to the car and get you home” Jay said taking Avery out to the car.
“How many did she have?” Emery asked the bartender as she grabbed Averys back
“Only like two and a half” The man responded, "she is in here often and I've never seen her like that” He said dumping her current drink down the drain “to be honest I was just going to call you”
“Okay thanks” Emery said figuring she was drugged by this guy sitting here
Meanwhile Avery is drunk and looks at the man who is jay who just seated her in the back seat. “Oh my god look at this cake” she said as she grabbed his ass as he was about to turn away “Sexy can I just part my manner, wanna come to this bed with me” She said patting his squad car seat next to her
Jay couldn’t help but smile and shake his head “how about we get you home” He said bucking her in and then closing the door
Emery came out and shook her head “creep drugged her” She rolled her eyes getting in the car “Thanks for this”
Jay looked back at Avery who was looking outside “so many lights shining, are we in space?” She said out loud he replied “no problem”
They get back to the house and Jay helps Emery get her inside onto the couch. And a bucket incase she needs to throw up. Jay and Emery went to finish what they were out to do. Before Jay dropped Emery off at home

You were sitting in the passenger seat, your head resting on the window while you had your gaze fixed on the house and the people passing by, boredom taking over. Being on a stakeout was one of the activities you least liked about being a cop. Being locked in a car for hours to watch someone, without having the chance to go to the bathroom or stretch your bones was really nerve-wracking and that time unfortunately it was your and your partner Jay turn. A year and a half ago you accepted your dream job. Going to school for IT really never pans out for most, you just get this large amount of computer knowledge Prior to working for the CPD you worked in tech support for an IT firm. It was boring work fixing peoples emails. You applied for a job working with the police shortly after getting out of college. You worked downstairs running plates, and helping when help needed. Till someone upstairs needed some help. They came searching and finally put your skills to the test. You must have impressed someone and they promoted you to the IT person for most elite squad in Chicago.
Intelligences you had heard about it, you had seen their work, they had the largest close rate in the entire city. They did what had to be done and you admired that. After 6 months in the basement you were finally happy to see some action. One thing you didn’t expect was to fall in love and end up being knocked up by someone in the squad.
Jay Halstead was a blue eyed boy, who was a ranger vet. He chose to server the city he loved when he got back. He was a hard working, go in guns blazing with a short tempter. Highly protective. It's one of the things you found attractive about him. Minus you were a sucker for blue eyed boys with charming smiles.
You tracked cars, pinged cell phones, gave live information as well as protected the squad. Sometimes you were even in the van on a sting op. Half of your job was making fun little toys that they would be able to use, as wires, or even the old fashion taped wire to the chest.
Day in and Day out of wiring certain people. You always had the most fun Wiring jay. He would always tease you about how you are wiring him, taping it to his chest. You would always give him a flirty response. Always made him smile. It kind was the best part of your day.
Then it became daily, He would be standing over your shoulder making little comments about how to do your job. Telling you spelt something wrong, or that you clicked the wrong thing and just silly little things that he would have no idea about.
One day you got pay back, he was in a sting, you were in the van and he had to pretend to be someone else off course a back ground you made for him. He kept getting details wrong and you would correct him. Mostly just so he didn’t get killed. You then got his change and completely embarrassed him. Almost blew his cover but it was completely worth it.
That was the day he got back into the van and his exact words were “if your going to talk like that I'm going to have to take you on a date first”
And you responded “guess you are going to have to get the balls and ask me out” smirking at him as you went back to your monitor. That was when he told you when and where to meet him. Not giving you an option.
That night changed the projector of the rest of your life. You fell in love. Kept it low key for as long as you could. Till jay was kidnapped. Then you came clean to voight. He already knew. Of course he did. Why did you think he didn’t know?
The two of you moved in together about six months later. One thing led to another till about a year after you started in intelligence. You peed on a stick and to your surprise, the feeling sick to your stomach, the constantly feeling tired no matter the amount of caffeine you had, made sense. There were two little pink lines. You were pregnant, with Jay Halstead baby.
You told him and he was beyond excited but the two of you opted to keep it under wraps till after at least the first trimester. That didn’t end up happening.
Jay was over protective, remember? He would bring you tea instead of coffee, water instead of your favorite soda, and would make sure you were not eating too many sweets, as that was your favorite past time when hacking.
A team full of detectives put it together rather quickly.
For some reason your morning sickness was not letting up. You were close to the end of the first trimester, but that night you were up all night. Your doctor said it was normal to have morning sickness, but today it was really bad. Jay got up and got ready to head in, as there was a body they were needing to find a murder.
He didn’t bother to wake you up, as he was next to you all night, he knew you didn’t sleep because he didn’t sleep all that well. He wrote a note and left it on his pillow telling you to take the day off, he will talk to voight and to get some rest. He even left some crackers and water by your bed so you didn’t have o go far. A night in shining armor really.
The start of the case is always busy, fingerprints, leads, addresses, cars, statements, pod footage. Jay however being who he was, made sure you were left alone for as long as he could. Till Voight sent him on a call, to investigate a last known address. Knowing
Adam tried to take on your roll for the day but of course couldn’t figure out how to get the scanner to follow the plate and ended up calling you.
“Hello?” You ask into the phone “yes Adam.. wait what time is it? Your serious okay ill be in shortly give me an hour” of course the one night you didn’t bring home your laptop that had access to CPD database.
You got into the shower and once you got out called jay “babe I know your out on a lead but when your done can you come pick me up, its one and you guys have a murder and need my help”
“Y/n I told you I would handle it get some rest” Jay said back into the phone
“Jay im pregnant not a child. Plus I feel better thank you for letting me sleep in but right now there is a killer on the streets and Adam is dumb and can’t figure out the system so come pick me up, considering you took the wrong set of keys, and took my car keys instead of yours.” You said back to him
“Fine” he said. You had a copy of his car key on your ring, but he did not have yours. Mostly because he was usually out late on a call and if you locked yourself out of your car, your best friend was easier to get ahold of. Plus you never knew when jay was going to be under and not able to come home just because you locked yourself out of your car.
About an hour later he came and picked you up, you made him stop and grab lunch as now you were starving. The joys of being pregnant.
Once you got to the office you got to work, Atwater came up to you “thank god y/n, you know Jay is a scary man.. he threatened to be head all of us if we woke you up..” He said in his Atwater style
You couldn’t help but smile “yeah he is over protective but I love that man”
