Skyline - Broken Social Scene
This is a great song to watch the sun set on the city on my balcony. Plus the opening of the video is unexpectedly funny

Skyline - Broken Social Scene

Stranger’s Kiss - Alex Cameron and Angel Olsen
Much as I love “Marlon Brando” off this album, this song is super great. It’s got two great sets of vocals, gratuitous saxophone, a biting reflection on a certain kind of life, and a 70s/80s rock ballad feel. Pretty good
Signs of Life - Arcade Fire
While we’re doing throwbacks to the 70s and 80s, the Arcade Fire do disco is pretty amazing
Sugar for the Pill - Slowdive
Exquisite. Just exquisite. Shoegaze may be self-absorbed sometimes, but it can also be amazing
Shark Smile - Big Thief
There’s something about Adrianne Lenker crooning “woo, baby, take me” that just gets to me
Desafío - Arca
Why don’t we just make 2017 the year of gay fetish music videos? (This one is a better song though)
Bike Dream - Rostam
So the rockstar I would most like to make out with is making gay rock songs. V good
Butt Muscle - Christeene
This one’s a weird one to include. I don’t actually like it that much. But I’m fascinated with it in a couple of ways, the most obvious of which is the (comparatively - I mean, it’s got Rick Owens in it) mainstream nature of something that’s effectively a celebration of gay male fetish culture; which is at the same time one of those things that actually revisits (accidentally I think) one of the weirdest Žižek lines: “is fist-fucking not the sexual invention of the twentieth century, a new model of eroticism and pleasure? It is no longer genitalized, but focused just on the penetration of the surface, with the role of the phallus being taken over by the hand, the autonomized partial object par excellence.” Basically it’s on the list because there’s a paper hidden inside it somewhere.
Wreath - Perfume Genius
This music video is a really good visual example of the feeling I get from this song
Total Entertainment Forever - Father John Misty
A little bit of the ennui of 2017, with an added splash of cultural critique
I’m late at making note of my favourite songs this year, so I’m just going to dump them all at once in upcoming posts. And also a bit of a post about my feelings for the year.
So, 2017. It’s been a professionally productive year. I finally took the step up to registrar and have spent a large part of the year having tell me I’m pretty good at it. Culturally there’s been a lot of good sci-fi and fantasy this year, large amounts of good music (more on this later), some good general fiction, some reasonable movies. On a personal front, not so good. When I look back at my personal life of the past few years I think that ever since Tim went to New York and Mum went to Hong Kong (and then London) I’ve first retreated into myself, and then become increasingly dysfunctional. No, that’s not quite right the word. I’ve done a lot of work, and that’s about all I’ve done. Catch-ups with friends outside of work have been more sparse, romantic life has been a bit abortive (I’ve still got regrets around Mark, Conor was great but brief, Josh is not a bad friend but we both are aware that friends who have sex is who we are to each other, other Josh wasn’t going to work, Nick wasn't really going to work either, Fraser was…complicated and sometimes I wonder if that was a fortunate near miss - and the bulk of that was 2016, not 2017). I think this year, while feeling increasingly valued at work I’ve felt increasing poverty of spirit at home. I can’t really shake the feeling that I don’t have anything to offer people outside of work.
The goal for 2018, then, is to try and get myself out of this. I don’t know how I’m going to do it entirely. I’m hoping I’ll figure it out quickly, because I’ve started to see a guy who’s amazing and seems to like me, and the feeling of personal inadequacy makes me intermittently feel as though I’m cheating him out of something better in his life (and worse for it) - so I’d like to stop that, and spend more time with him. I’m going back to the gym tomorrow (again another thing that’s been waiting since Kal). I’ve got plans to take my first proper holiday since starting work (a whole 3 months if they give it to me).
I also want to catch up with you (people who read this) who I have no doubt I have not seen since before Kalgoorlie. So here’s hoping the future can be what it used to be.
The way I want to be in forty years time
My travel aesthetic is monochome, expensive, and delightful
ANRS IPERGAY is still one of the most ridiculous trial names
I was listening to a computer-suggested playlist of things, and one song seemed vaguely familiar and I wanted to hear more and it turns out there is a marching band that covers electro artists. And they’re good
Sometimes you're having dinner in a pub in Kalgoorlie with people and the PM walks in and you realise that The Simpsons is pretty true to life
Thinking about making a slightly inappropriate post sometime in the next week. Y/N?
