Cam heaved again, clutching at her stomach. Wiping at her mouth with the back of her hand, she grimaced instinctively at the feel of liquid smearing across her face. Sitting back up, she stares at her hands, almost black with a mix of rainbow coloured bloods. She scrubbed them against her pants, blinking against the flashing light.Â
There was a siren â an emergency claxon sounding in the distance. OrâŠnot so distant after all. Dragging herself across the floor away her lost food, Cam leaned against the cool metal of the wall, shielding her eyes against the bright red of the alert lights.Â
She took deep, breaths as the haze that had clouded the edge of her vision for so long finally faded. The awareness of the pain that came with it was a kind of sweet relief. Tilting her head back, Cam gulped down air; even this smokey miasma was better than anything sheâd felt since coming home to thatâŠscene.Â
Even that vague thought was enough to bring every detail hurtling to the front of her mind â all the marks that this was an assassination by the Rioryl, the blood smears across the wall, the carefully sympathetic eyes of those black clad shadows who had been a constant on the edges of her life. For once, she saw her motherâs face again, eyes wide and glazed over, cruelly unmarred in contrast to every other inch of her skin.Â
Yet that was still less painful than the smiling expression her mind twisted it into next, the lively swish of hair as her mother laughed at something, beautiful and alive. It was a sweet pain, a cathartic burn that made Cam smile as she opens her eyes again to scene of destruction laid out before her.
Yes, she had done all of this. Now, with the fog of her pained fury lifted, Cam might have finally wondered if it all hadnât been too much, if her mother would have been ashamed at the lengths Cam had done to track down those truly responsible for Carol Marcusâs death and make them pay. Except she didnât because as she breathed in the smokey air and listened to the blare of the emergency warning, she knew it was all over anyways.Â
Folding her hands over her heart, Cam closed her eyes again and smiled to herself. âI love you, Mum,â she whispers before the self-destruct activates, blowing the Section 31 Cold Space Station 7 out of existence.Â
