Finishing the ‘Every Penny Counts” rewards! We couldn’t do it without our backers support.
Thank you ❤️
“Every Penny Counts” first group of thank yous! 🎉Each of you made this possible, thank you for your generosity and your support from the Children of Disease team and all the families battling illness 🙌🏻
Pictured above is a group session at Wonders & Worries. This group session is for children who have a long term or chronically ill parent. The group sessions at Wonders & Worries are divided by age group. This group is all elementary and middle school aged children (they also have groups for teenagers). Group sessions at W&W are designed to help children express their fears and concerns and connect with other children in similar situations.

Filming with Wonders & Worries in Austin, TX was an incredible and eye opening experience; an experience that couldn't have been possible without the support of those who backed us on Kickstarter!
~~~~~~
Wonders & Worries is the ONLY organization in the entire United States that offers free support and guidance to children during a parent's serious illness. During our trip to Austin, TX we had the priviledge of filming and observing the important work that the Child life Specialists and volunteers of W&W do everyday with families battling parental chronic illness.
~~~~~~
If your family has been impacted by parental illness go check out the Wonders & Worries website (link below). Unfortunately they can only offer in person guidance and support if you live near one of their office locations in Texas (this will hopefully change in the future!). But luckily the amazing professionals at W&W have recently launched their help hotline. From anywhere in the country between the hours of 10am and 2pm on Monday-Thursday you can call W&W for support and guidance (phone number below). The phone will be answered by one of the amazing Child life Specialists, who are so eager to help parents with disease and children of disease.

I got the idea for @childrenofdisease 3 years ago and now I can finally say that we’ve wrapped production! 🎥
Making this film and meeting the families I’ve met, the child life specialists and the therapists who work to help these families has been a humbling, healing, and heart wrenching experience. The strength of these families battling parental chronic illness is immeasurable, the passion of the child life specialists who help the children understand and cope with their parents chronic illness is awe inspiring. I cannot wait to share the completed film #ChildrenofDisease with the world!
Special thank you to the families featured in the film, who are brave enough to share their stories. Thank you to @becstir for sharing her story of being a child of disease and for offering her expertise as a therapist. A huge thank you to every contributor to the film’s Kickstarter campaign, this is happening because of you! And last and certainly not least to the ONLY organization in the entire United States offering free support to children and families through a parent’s serious illness, thank you to @wondersnworries . I am so grateful that all of you have joined my fight to support children of disease and educate parents with disease. Together we will bring to light a seriously underrepresented issue and hopefully help thousands of families across the country 💓
Now excuse me while I lock myself in the editing room until it’s finished 🤓😂🎞

NEW DOCUMENTARY FILM ‘CHILDREN OF DISEASE’
Please stop and read this as it may apply to you/your family!
Attention all chronically ill parents and everyone with chronically ill parents!!
Filmmaker searching for families willing to participate in a new documentary titled, Children of Disease. The film will share the stories of five chronically ill parents as they struggle simultaneously to battle illness, and raise children of varied ages. The film will also feature experts in the field of child development, as well as therapists and doctors. The term, ‘child of disease’ refers to a child whose parent(s) was diagnosed with a chronic illness anytime before the child turned 16. These children witness their parents become ill and stay ill long term, a heartbreaking experience that one should not have to face until well into adulthood. Many of these children are introduced to illness at such a young age that it inevitably shapes them. They may act out, withdraw, experience anxiety and depression, develop physical health issues themselves, or simply have their world view altered in an unhealthy and isolating way. Parents diagnosed with chronic illness often struggle with feelings of helplessness and distress in regards to their children’s well-being.
If you are a ‘child of disease’ or a parent with disease, we want to hear your story, whether you are newly diagnosed or have been battling illness for many years. Contact us for the chance to join the mission to unite the families struggling with illness and the heartbreak it often brings. Help us create a support system for families and ‘children of disease’ to come.
*The filmmaker creating this documentary is a child of disease, all families will be treated with compassion and respect. The ultimate goal is to bring awareness to children and families who are living these experiences, not to exploit families going through tough situations. That being said, all effected family members must be willing to appear in the film and share their stories openly and honestly. If you are unsure about participating but would like more information, please contact us.
*Anyone within the United States can apply
If you are interested in participating in the filming of this project please contact us (message us on tumblr) with:
o First and last names of all family members
o Your family’s story, from diagnosis to present day, include any experiences you find of note
o Current ages of all family members as well as ages when the parent(s) was diagnosed
o Parent(s) diagnosis
o At least one family photo/photos of the individual family members
*All participants must be able to prove their story with medical records (medical records will not be used or shown to anyone other than the casting director)
*Images property of VanDerland Productions*
