Billy Talent Concert

Billy Talent know how to get the crowd going and overall the energy of their performance was next level. Their banter with the crowd felt genuine and it was humbling to hear that this year its their 20th anniversary playing music together. 

They kept their promise and came back to South Africa, and it was great to see that after the show had ended and most had left, one of the crew members told the band about a little kid in the crowd who was crazy about them and the entire band signed his t-shirt.

The Cape Town City Hall is a beautiful venue, the high ceilings and theater like interior made this night that extra bit special. Louder guitar would have been nice and probably made the music more memorable but sadly with live shows here, we hardly ever get the sound spot on. Hope they rock Pretoria!

PS: At least I can now get the tabs for White Sparrows, Devil on my shoulder and Saint Veronica and really figure out what the guitarist was playing :)

Bon Jovi was really fun! They played a long set, looked genuinely happy to perform here and even threw in some more songs after their second encore. Bonus for the justin bieber joke ;)

It turns out procrastination is not typically a function of laziness, apathy or work ethic as it is often regarded to be. It’s a neurotic self-defense behavior that develops to protect a person’s sense of self-worth. You see, procrastinators tend to be people who have, for whatever reason, developed to perceive an unusually strong association between their performance and their value as a person. This makes failure or criticism disproportionately painful, which leads naturally to hesitancy when it comes to the prospect of doing anything that reflects their ability — which is pretty much everything. But in real life, you can’t avoid doing things. We have to earn a living, do our taxes, have difficult conversations sometimes. Human life requires confronting uncertainty and risk, so pressure mounts. Procrastination gives a person a temporary hit of relief from this pressure of “having to do” things, which is a self-rewarding behavior. So it continues and becomes the normal way to respond to these pressures. Particularly prone to serious procrastination problems are children who grew up with unusually high expectations placed on them. Their older siblings may have been high achievers, leaving big shoes to fill, or their parents may have had neurotic and inhuman expectations of their own, or else they exhibited exceptional talents early on, and thereafter “average” performances were met with concern and suspicion from parents and teachers.

"Thanks for keeping me alive"

The curtain rose and Rodriguez and his band started blasting Only good for conversation off Cold Fact (1970). The atmosphere in the stadium instantly became tense; it was not a great start.

Grandwest has never been a place that I like. Maybe it’s the fake night sky above you on the way into the arena. Maybe it’s the simple fact that it's a casino, which for me instantly undermines the integrity of holding a concert within its walls. This being said, it was one of the better concerts I have seen in this venue.

I would have much preferred a smaller more intimate band. Much of the definition in the sounds from the different musicians was completely lost. Part of this was owing to the acoustics of the venue, but having two drummers as well as a percussionist in my mind was overkill. The addition of a third guitarist also seemed to take away more from the overall sound than it added.

Vocal clarity at a concert, especially in a large arena, is notoriously hard to achieve. At times the sound engineers had to push Rodriguez' vocals to the point of feedback and even then you still couldn't distinguish the lyrics he was singing. While it wasn’t an issue in all of the songs it seemed to be more a factor of Rodriguez' performance rather than a technical issue. Compared to the other ~5000+ crowd-pulling acts that have visited South Africa, you could tell that Rodriguez was no expert with crowds this large. However, this added more to his integrity as an artist and he genuinely came across as a humble, humorous human being. People really connected with him. They got what they came for - the mystique.

Last night was epic to say the least!

Firstly, the music for once started on time and that credit goes to the organizer, Xavier Stanton, for running a smooth ship. Regular live-music goers spend too many nights in a dark, cold-room filled with smoke, patiently waiting for a gig to start. Carnival Court was neither dark nor depressingly cold; the latter is largely explained by the vibrant crowd that packed the place with their joyous cheers and attentive smiles.

 Tombstone Pete played second and oh my!!! He is a living legend, a truly eccentric player, who can hold the crowd on his own without the need for a drummer or a singer because his guitar bangs as LOUD as any drum and his melodies are too beautiful, and too personal, to be interfered on by another man's words. His rockout attitude on stage, complex percussive rhythms and unorthodox guitar playing style might fool some to believing that the visuals is the whole story but Tombstone Pete is so much more because if we closed our eyes and simply listened to what he was playing we would still love him for what he is! A crazy man who decided that metal should be played in an acoustic guitar, with even more crazy stories about being refused entrance in Australia and ending up in shitty London, oh Pete, please become our mentor and teach us the way of living a fully devoted life to mastering your craft.  

It was a pleasure to perform as Chilled Vibes with these two artists and those of you who missed them please go to their shows. Life is too short not to experience what we felt being there, and to those of you who came hope you enjoyed our set. It was a pleasure to play for you and to get our first ever encore. It was fun to play two new songs in front of such a receptive crowd and to get so much love coming from you. A special thank you goes out to Daniel Gray for making our music so much better with his talent.

Music jobs and thoughts

Having a business degree opens an endless world of possibilities it also makes you scream at yourself for not following any of those. Where are the steady stream of guitar students you where going to get? Have you found that record label job you so badly crave? Is your band playing some good festivals and financially justifying the time, effort and the heat your under with your folks for doing this full-time?  

It’s time to revise some of those goals, reflect on some areas where I can do better and get a job or at least apply for some so I can write songs carefree and actually enjoy my music career rather than stress every step of the way on how I am going to afford food and petrol this month. It starts with writing this as I've been meaning to for awhile now and always stop half way and think its not good enough and there is no time because i should be doing things. I agree it isn't good enough, but its a start.
