Swedish artist Nikolaj Cyon drew this map using historical research into the location of 13th-century ethnic and tribal groups in Africa, and pictured them as if they were 20th-century nation-states with firm fixed boundaries and never colonized by western powers. The map is upside down with south over north: the actual geography of the planet gives no guidance on which way is “up.” The north on top convention comes directly from power politics.
