yes, even those boundaries. those boundaries you believe are unreasonable. those boundaries you think are too hard to adhere to. those boundaries others in the past have struggled to respect. those boundaries others struggle to take seriously. those boundaries that always made you feel like a burden to your loved ones.

but your f/o? they'd respect those boundaries instantly. no judgement, no "compromises" at your expense. it's not stupid to them. when it comes to your comfort, they will always treat it with the seriousness it deserves.

if something is unclear, they'll bring it up to you. if they're confused about some specifics, they'll talk to you about it. and if they ever accidentally make you uncomfortable, they will always apologize (without you having to ask for one) and ask what they did wrong.

you'd never have to tell them twice. the onus would never be on you to constantly remind them. they wouldn't wait for you to do all of the communication. your f/o doesn't care if you think you're "hard to love". they truly, genuinely give a damn, and of course your comfort will always be their top priority, no matter what.

they'll make the effort for you, even if no one else has ever been willing to.

even when you're out with your f/o's friends, they will always make an effort to make you feel included. no matter how close they may be to them or how extroverted your f/o is, they will never forget to ask you before going along with a plan or who you want to go with if you ever need to split up for whatever reason or ask what you think and how you feel during a discussion.

hangouts should be fun, and they would want it to be enjoyable for everyone, which includes you. you're not weighing anyone down just by being here. if you were chosen to be invited, then you should feel equally included! it's not toxic or selfish of you if you're just not having any fun at all, it happens! it's entirely reasonable to feel this way. your f/o understands that.

they won't feel annoyed if you want to tag along in everything, clung at their side. they won't feel offended if you're uncomfortable or they're unintentionally making you feel left out. if you just want to leave, they'll go with you, no questions asked. they'll give you all the attention and care that you need for the rest of the day, because your comfort and happiness are more important to them right now than any activity they may have been up to with their friends.

What are f/o's and all the other (to me at least) gibberish phrases?

hello! first of all, in the future please try to speak in a more respectful way when asking things to other people. calling selfship terminology "gibberish phrases" can be funny because there's truth to it but in this context it just came across as unnecessarily rude. i don't expect total formality, just basic respect.

i'm sure that there are more out there, but i'll go over the terms i personally use. keep in mind that other people may define these terms differently since everyone's experiences are different and selfshipping means something different to everyone, but this is what i tend to go by.

f/o - fictional other, derived from "significant other". basically a partner who is fictional or comes from a fictional source. while it is romantic in origin, it is widely used as a general term for ALL types of relationships, including platonic, queerplatonic, familial, etc.

s/i - self insert. thing you use to ship with your f/o. most commonly they are meant to represent your real self, hence the name, but some people like to use ocs in their place instead. there's no hard rules.

f/b - fictional bond, coined by @/a-ship-unto-thyself. it's a strictly non-romantic term. for those who are uncomfortable with using the term "f/o" for their non-romantic fictional relationships due to its romantic origins.

rpf - real person fiction. it's the general term used for fanfiction involving real life people such as celebrities, though usually when you see this term being used in selfship spaces we're mainly talking about those who selfship with real people, which does count as an extremely invasive and inappropriate form of rpf.

they've always insisted that they can handle it, that they're used to dealing with mockery and ridicule, no matter how much they may or may not deserve it. but you're not having any of it. you refuse to let them put up with this alone.

you seethe watching the situation playing out before you. nothing infuriates you more than seeing someone being so willfully rude to your f/o. maybe your f/o was angrily lashing out, fighting back, or maybe they're simply the type to stand there silently and take it. whatever their reaction was, they still halted with a surprised look on their face when you stood up for them, one hand gripping their body protectively.

they tried to dissuade you, of course. it's fine, just leave it, they insist. maybe you listen, and drag your f/o away to someplace safe. or you're too stubborn to let that asshole leave without teaching them a lesson, using physical force if necessary.

you treated your f/o to some nice drinks at home after that whole fiasco. they were cuddled up next to you with a cup in their hands and some snacks nearby, still pretty shaken, but calming down a little now that they're in your arms.

as much as they hate seeing you get hurt or putting yourself on the frontlines just for them, they still appreciate it more than you know. they can rest easier knowing that now, they have someone who loves them as they are, and they know you'll always be there to protect them.
