The Hardwood Floor Safe-Cleaning Checklist (Save this before you buy an appliance) 📋✨
If you have natural hardwood floors (solid timber, engineered wood, or parquet), your cleaning hardware needs a completely different set of specifications than a carpet-heavy home.
Before you run your current vacuum—or buy a new one—run it through this 5-point anti-scratch checklist:
[ ] 1. Can you turn off the brush bar? If the stiff nylon beater bar cannot be physically disabled or swapped for a soft roller, do not use it on wood. Spinning bristles will strip polish and leave swirl marks.
[ ] 2. What are the wheels made of? Flip the machine over. If the casters are hard, shiny plastic, they will trap grit and scratch your floors. Look for soft, rubberized, or silicone-coated wheels.
[ ] 3. Is the suction pulling from the bevels? Wood floors expand and contract, leaving microscopic expansion gaps and bevels. You need high sealed pull (at least 20–25 kPa) to lift trapped dirt out of those grooves so it doesn't get ground in later by foot traffic.
[ ] 4. Is the floor head padded? The bottom perimeter of the floor nozzle should feature soft felt or horsehair stripping to prevent the hard plastic chassis from accidentally knocking and chipping your baseboards and floor edges.
[ ] 5. How easily can you maneuver? Heavy, rigid uprights force you to pivot sharply, which twists debris into the floor coating. Lightweight canister or stick models with smooth articulating joints reduce surface friction.
