I hate that post going round thatâs like âhaha you wouldnât tell a disabled guy heâs using his crutch as a crutchâ ecause that very thing literally happens to people that use mobility aids.
I canât count how many time people (including physiotherapists whoâre supposed to be understanding and help me) have said âyou need to stop relying on your crutchesâ and the like.
I literally had a physiotherapist remove my crutches from under me without my consent and tell me to walk.
And itâs not even a rare thing.
Wheelchair users get told they need to stop relying on their wheelchairs, cane users get told they shouldnât rely on their canes etc.
Iâm just so bored with the depression-centric ableism rhetoric, erasing the ableism people with physical and visable disabilities experience
I canât believe this needs to be said, butâŠ
- Withholding medication from a disabled person is not a joke, itâs not a punishment, itâs abuse.
- Withholding mobility equipment from a disabled person is not a joke, itâs not a punishment, itâs abuse.
- Withholding stim toys, comfort items or similar from a disabled person is not a joke, itâs not a punishment, itâs abuse.
- Stopping a disabled person from using harmless routines or coping mechanism is not a joke, itâs not a punishment, itâs abuse.
Stop.

PSA: Some wheelchair users can *GASP* walk
Wheelchairs are used for many disabilities; it could be very painful to walk, one may lack the strength to walk, be prone to fainting, have hypermobility, shortness of lung capacity, fragility of joints, muscles, or skin etc.Â
REBLOG so people STOP harassing wheelchair users when they stand up and even WALK out their chairs in public.
Autism âExpertsâ: âWhat can we do to better understand autistic people?â
Autistic People:Â âWell, you could just listen to us.â
Autism âExpertsâ: âI know. Weâll play with laboratory mice.â
Disabled Person:Â âI canât do this.â
Abled Person:Â âYes you can.â
Disabled Person:Â âActually, no I canât. I wasnât putting myself down. I was just stating a fact. Everyone has some things that theyâre able to do and some things that theyâre not. This just happens to be something that Iâm not able to do. Maybe thereâs something similar that I can do but not exactly this. Maybe it doesnât come natural to me but I can do it if you explain in detail how. By placing a high importance on one particular skill, youâre the one putting me down. Iâm well aware that the only reason youâre defaulting to âyes you canâ is because you expect it to be a skill that everyone naturally has, which means youâre implying that there must be something wrong with me if Iâm not able to do it.â
Abled Person: âUh ⊠Yes you can.â
Disabled Person: (gets angry)Â âNo I canât! You just ignored everything I said!â
Abled Person:Â âGeez! Why do you get mad so easily? I was just trying to help.â
