It’s a bit strange to see all those negative reactions to Yifan’s comments. Because:
1. First of all, many fans begin stanning idols because of their appearance (oh, and I don’t say “all”, but “many”).
2. When you say that you like tall guys, people with good humour, intelligent, it’s also preferences. And what should do not very clever shorties with bad humour or lack of it. They also feel offended!
3. Yifan himself was very tanned and unattractive (from those people’s view from his childhood and at school). Girls find him unattractive because of his appearance (skin colour and not very slim figure) and bad English, and guys don’t want to hang out with him. So perhaps he knows better than many how it feels to be ostracised because of appearance.
4. He promotes products which make skin LIGHTER. You see: LIGHTER! Not DARKER. Yes, he said a lot of controversial things since he’s got the contract with Maybelline, but many of those things were said because of his commercials (like kabe-don).
5. In my opinion, he has a very tiny experience of close relationship with women and girls. He loves his mother, yes, and much knowledge about women and girls he got from her. But it seems that he really clueless about many things connected with girls, their reactions and behaviour. Perhaps, he should educate a bit or a lot ^^ about these things,
6. A lot of those views which connected with appearance depend on culture and mentality of people. Yes, many of us don’t want to accept it: “Oh. it’s 21st century out there, people shouldn’t be so ignorant and narrow-minded”. Maybe, they shouldn’t but they are, people can’t think without using prejudices and cliches, because often it replaces their experience. And in every culture we have all those things, different for every region. Do you know how many times I heard comments that to have pale skin is not very attractive, that I looked sick and unhealthy? Do you know how many times I heard questions: “Are you sick? Do you have problems with kidneys?” And it’s all because of my very white (pale - I don’t know which word I should use, which has neutral connotations) skin and black circles under the eyes, because capillars seems very dark almost black under this kind of skin. And I used to it because in our region “it’s unhealthy to be pale” and people think that way. “Go on beach! Get tanned at least!” And nobody cares that you actually can’t get tanned)))
I’m just really tired of all this stuff like “Kris is misoginist PROBLEMATIC, colorist PROBLEMATIC, sexist PROBLEMATIC, he hates women PROBLEMATIC, he humilates them PROBLEMATIC, he doesn’t respect them PROBLEMATIC” and all those petitions. In fact, it’s really hard to understand and except some his words, especially, when you feel that those words offended you. But often I feel that it is witch-hunt. We just found a guy with conservative, traditional views and began to look for misoginist and colorist comments in his speech and words. And I think that Kris is really very conservative and traditional about roles of men and women, relationship, family and maybe beauty, but I’ve never seen that he acted disrespectful or arrogant, just childish and clueless about some things.
AND ONE MORE THING: WHY KRIS WHO ANSWERED “LIGHTER SKIN” IS COLORIST AND JOURNALIST WHO ASKED “DARKER OR LIGHTER?” IS A GOOD BOY? or we just don’t care about the whole situation (where it’s normal to ask about colour preference) but care about answer?
