People pretending societal disgust with students and professionals relying on AI like a crutch is some sort of Luddite pearl-clutching against new technology completely dismiss how seriously institutions and the general public used to treat traditional forms of academic dishonesty like plagiarism and cheating. It used to be career-ending. Then-Senator Biden lost-out on his first run for the presidency largely because of a plagiarism scandal and he was neither the first or last to suffer consequences for similar dishonesty.

LLM are, by definition, plagiarism machines. The automation does not afford the user the plausible deniability of “oh, I did not know I was copying” because copying is all these AI systems do. Even relying on LLMs trained exclusively on content knowingly and willingly uploaded by the original authors (which do not exist anyway) is no better because the end user is still trying to pass-off someone else’s work as their own to cover-up for their lack of original effort, insight, or creativity.

There is no acceptable reason to use generative AI for leisure, academic, or professional pursuits—the first is stupid, the second is dishonest, the third is dangerous.
