Finally finished this piece for my HnK AU: the Gems are angels, & Father Adamant is a gentle, mysterious priest who lives a modest life of solitude in a quiet country parish. He has an otherworldly ability to heal the ill & infirm, and so people have begun to refer to him as a living Saint. The gems are suspicious of him and the source of his power, as they are unable to confirm that it comes from God and not from demonic manipulation. But Antarcticite, a watcher who has been tasked to keep an eye on Father Adamant, has grown to believe that the man truly IS as holy as the people say. Their sincere faith in Father Adamant causes a greater crisis of faith for Antarc. After all, Antarc is starting to believe that Father Adamant can be trusted, regardless of the source of his power. How could it be a sin to love someone so Good?

Antarcticite breaks into a million pieces. Their skull shatters, their right eyeball comes loose, but the left is fixed on Phos. It isn’t a sad expression, Antarcticite is calm, ready. A pillar of strength is smashed, to protect Phos.

To become an adult is to realise that your parents are weak and fragile just like you and that when they smile, they do so knowing that the world can be a lonely and cold wasteland of a place. That is what I see in Antarcticite’s eye, a parent’s love and sacrifice, light and dark, a sad smile.
