Cooking With Facebook
One of our doctors recently joked around with us about how they spent a pretty penny remodeling their kitchen earlier this year, but that they still never cook at home since they can get better food from a restaurant. This didn’t come as a surprise to us. Here’s why…
We surveyed around 15,000 doctors on their use of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, & LinkedIn. What we found is that around 25% of the doctors had a social media profile for themselves or their practice. This is certainly lower than one would expect when you consider that these profiles can be created & used for free. However, the truly alarming statistic is that close to 85% of these doctors simply don’t use these profiles on a regular basis.
The most common reason we received for doctors not using these profiles was because they “haven’t seen any patients” coming from their profile. This isn’t surprising either, since a critical part to social networking is thesocial part! Just like in the real world, there is no online ‘magic’ to social networking. You can’t have a set-it-and-forget-it mentality and expect patients to start lining up around your building.
No matter how accurate the temperature of your Wolf range, how yourWusthof holds an edge, or the extent of your All-Clad collection – if you don’t use them, you won’t be giving Thomas Keller a run for his money anytime soon. In order to get a good home-cooked meal, you need to spend some time in the kitchen. Social media is no different – in order to put it to work for your practice, you need to actually use it. If you want an easy recipe for some comfort food, try this southwestern ham-and-cheese pie.

Increasing Visitors from Google…
A few weeks ago, we wrote about starring on Google. Many of you have been asking us what the big deal is about having your star ratings included in Google’s search results & whether it’s really worth it for your practice. As a bunch of number-loving-geeks, let us answer that question by showing you the data…
The graph above is directly from our Google Analytics account where we track traffic to our doctors’ blogs at DoctorBase.com. You can see the immediate spike in traffic that occurred the day that Google started including our star ratings in their search results. What we’ve seen since is an average 29% increase in visitors to doctors’ blogs after their star rating was displayed in Google’s search results.
Still don’t believe the numbers? Try it for yourself! This week we’re introducing our ‘newborn’ Panda Cub service – a simple, cost-effective way for your practice to gain access to star ratings on Google. And, we’re giving our blog readers their first 30-days for free. Just contact me below to learn more & sign up for the no-commitment 30-day free trial to see what DoctorBase can do for you…

The People Have Voted – Online Reviews Really are a Good Thing…
We’ve mentioned before that online review sites like Yelp seem to be the really big deal that nobody wants to talk about. As expected, traffic to our last Yelp-centered blog post was around 300% higher that usual – about the average increase whenever we discuss online reviews.
What we didn’t expect, was that doctors are beginning to get comfortable talking about it. Attendance for our webinar on Yelp & what to do with online reviews was also above average this past week. Have we finally turned the corner and are doctors finally coming to grips with the inevitable existence of online reviews?
We certainly hope so – because they’re not going anywhere. This is why we’re constantly telling our own doctors to get proactive and make sure all of your happy patients are telling their friends & family about the great work you do. Because face it – you’re in business because your satisfied patients far outnumber the occasional disgruntled one. And, here are the numbers that prove it…
Our doctors proactively survey their patients via post-appointment follow up emails. Of the thousands of reviews these patients have left for their doctors, here’s how it breaks down (complete with Brian-Wilson-inspired-mohawk):
It turns out these online reviews aren’t such a bad thing after all. By being proactive about getting reviews from your existing patients, you’ll be able to give a comprehensive & transparent view of your practice that tends to be overwhelmingly positive.
Still afraid of online reviews? Let us quell your fears by showing how to make them and the Internet work for your practice. Join us for one of this week’s webinars on Yelp, Facebook, Google, or Pandas.

80k Patients Referred…
Well, that was quick. It seems like it was only a couple weeks ago when we referred the 70,000th patient to a doctor on DoctorBase. Oh wait, it was!!!
Now we’re up to over 80k patients referred. And, we’re increasing the frequency of our thank you notes to the doctors & patients using DoctorBase. Thanks to all who are onboard with helping us improve healthcare!
90k – you’re up next…
Blog vs. Website: Which is Better for Your Practice?
We sometimes get quizzical looks when we tell doctors a blog will be more beneficial to their practice than a website, usually because not many people know the difference between the two. While they do essentially the same thing – give you a presence on the web – they go about it in two very different ways. Here’s what your online presence needs, and how a blog & a website go about accomplishing this:
Fresh & Relevant Content
The major difference between a blog and a website is the ability to quickly & effortlessly update the site. With a static website, you need to contact your administrator to upload new text about your remodeled office or learn how to code in HTML in order to do it yourself.
With a dynamic blog, you can post updated content whenever you’d like through a simple interface – no webmaster required. The ease of which this can be accomplished also allows you to add more relevant content about a new piece of equipment you recently purchased, or a special offer from your practice.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
The reason you have a web presence is because you ultimately want to be found by new & existing patients online. Your patients are going to look for you on a search engine like Google. Thus, you want to be sure your online presence comes up on the top of Google’s results by employing good SEO.
Websites are optimized for search primarily through a very simple addition of something called ‘metadata.’ This is generally just a couple paragraphs of information about the website that’s embedded in the site’s code and not displayed on the website itself. (If anybody tries to sell you a ‘search optimized website’ based solely on metadata, politely say “no thank you” and back away slowly!)
While blogs do include metadata as well, they also allow for you to constantly add more viewable content to the site. The ability to consistently add your own content allows you to, over time, claim keywords specific to your industry & practice (i.e. – “one days crowns anyville,” “invisible braces anytown,” etc.). This combination of current & detailed content is what search engines like Google absolutely love!
Social Media Integration
We know most doctors don’t have the time to spend all day updating your status via social media. But let’s face it, at least a few of your patients are a part of the 300 million people that are using Facebook. The reason they do is because social media sites like Facebook create an interactive experience for the user.
Websites allow for a patient, at most, to contact you via email. This is a bit underwhelming for an industry that prides itself in word-of-mouth success and the human touch. (Are you one of the many doctors still using an answering service?)
A blog allows for communication to happen right there on your site via a dialog with your patients. And, this interaction shows prospective patients just how involved you are in taking care of them. Plus, any of the new content you post to your blog can also be easily distributed via a multitude of social networks (i.e. – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) giving you word-of-mouth success on the Internet.
Up-to-Date Appearance
There’s also an aesthetic advantage that blogs have over websites – the ability to update their appearance with as little as a click of a mouse. You’ve probably seen a website that obviously hasn’t been updated since 1992, and it likely makes you question how up-to-date the rest of the practice is. The reason it hasn’t been updated is because a total redesign of a website often takes a developer months and costs $5,000 – $10,000+.
Since blogs are set up on a standardized framework, you can revise the appearance of a blog with little to no effort, and often for free by simply implementing a new theme. This will ensure your practice is always looking stylish and up-to-date on the web without it costing you several thousand dollars.
Naturally, we here at DoctorBase are a bit biased towards blogs because we see them outperform our doctors’ own websites on a daily basis. But, don’t take our word for it – check out who else is using a blog to improve their online presence…

Reduce No Shows by 20%
We discuss using the Internet to grow patient referrals quite a bit here. But, there’s even more that this bold new world of online software can do for your practice, starting with your everyday tasks…
Most practices have a system in place to remind patients of upcoming appointments. While many of you have begun to utilize automated reminder services, there are still a vast amount of offices spending over an hour each day calling each patient individually. The usual reluctance to automate this task providing that “personal touch” of speaking with the patient in person improves the doctor-patient relationship. Here’s a bit of data that may have you rethink this notion:
We collected metrics on practices automating appointment reminders with our DoctorBase Panda Patient Referral Software and found that the use of appointment reminders via text reduced no-shows by an average of 20%. That’s one more patient in your practice for every 5 missed appointments. And, the kicker is that this is accomplished while also reducing the workloadon your office staff. (More details on what our metrics showed on workload reduction in weeks to come…)
While we’re admittedly biased toward our own software, we should note that there are number of companies that provide this service to doctors. While there are certainly the good & the bad amongst them, the important thing is that you start automating this simple task through one of the services available to you in order to reduce no-shows – even if it’s not Panda.
If you would like to learn more about how we automate appointment reminders & patient referrals at DoctorBase, we’d be happy to give you a free demo of Panda customized for your office! Just pick a time & date at: Call Tristan at 415-265-1325

To Blog or Not to Blog: It isn't really a question....
Last week, the blog publishing & hosting platform WordPress was attacked, resulting in difficulties for the over 18 million blogs that run on WordPress. Yes, you read that right – over 18 million blogs. So, what’s the big deal about blogging?
Instead of having to get your web designer to update content (which can often take months to implement), a blog allows you to login and post articles without the need of an IT department. By having a blog that you can post articles & information to on a regular basis, you can provide the fresh unique content that search engines like Google love. And, love from Google often equates in a higher rank in their search results, which is a very important aspect to your marketing when patients are searching for your services online.Last week, the blog publishing & hosting platform WordPress was attacked, resulting in difficulties for the over 18 million blogs that run on WordPress. Yes, you read that right – over 18 million blogs. So, what’s the big deal about blogging?
Unfortunately, blogging on a platform like WordPress can still both daunting & time-consuming. WordPress’s self-professed “5 Minute Installation” still requires you to have FTP access to the server where you’re hosting your blog. (And, if you don’t know FTP from SSL, it’s likely going to take you longer than 5 minutes!) Then, you still need to learn how to navigate their online interface…
Still, even though it’s a bit of extra work, blogging is well worth it for your practice. We’ve seen our doctors’ blogs outrank their own websites on Google, and we know that a blog with updated content that engages patients creates 5x times as many patient inquiries as the average medical, dental or chiropractic website.
Want to put a blog to work for your practice, but don’t want to deal with logging into to FTP servers? Do we have a solution for you! Taking Care of Your Google Places and Patients
Managing your Google Places Listing is more important then ever. With 1 out of 5 searches in Google related to location, Google Places is now the Yellow Pages when it comes to searching for a service by location.
For Chiropractors it is extremley prudent that their buisness listing on Google is:
Owned and Verified
Contains the Correct Information
Optimized with Description of Services and Keywords
Linked to a Blog or website (so patients can find out more about the Doctor and make contact with the office)
If you want your Practice to be more visible online in your local area, make sure you have your Google Places taken care of.
This can be time consuming and confusing for many Chiropractors, who really only should be doing one thing: Taking Care of Patients
Service Providers, such as DoctorBase, can take care of Google Places Listings for Practices and Doctors. Making sure their listing is ready for Prime Time.
So Chiropractors can deal with more important issues, like Subluxations, Patient Questions, and explaining the benefits of proper Nutrition and Diet in regards to the Nervous System.
