Iron Lung
IRON LUNG SPOILERS AHEAD
*-*-*-*
I think something Iron Lung gets massively right about Cosmic Horror, that I think can be really difficult to do in any kind of media, is the true horrifying unknowable-ness of how much power The Horror/Entity/Elder God actually has at any moment.
The SM-8 main voice describes "an ignorant god sees a sliver of our universe through a pinhole and believes it perceives all that is and all that will be, and it is right. A god makes sense of what it sees.”
Which is to say, a completely valid interpretation of the film events at the end is that as It sees Simon through that tiny porthole, it sees one creature. Simon and The Iron Lung are the same to it, and it makes it so simply by believing it. Simon starts fusing with the ship, he gains an oxygen bar, like the ship is breathing for him, things start working that definitely shouldn't be. He kept trying to keep the camera pressed down, now the ship is doing it for him.
Can you imagine being faced with an entity that will transform you at the most basic molecular level, completely passively, simply because of what it thinks it understands about you? That's some exquisitely done cosmic/eldritch god terror.
((Also love the way that Simon's transforming form makes me think of Pirates of the Caribbean 2/3, and the crew of Davy Jones' ship - after long enough, you simply become a part of it.))
I can't believe there are reviewers who think the final shot of "iron lung" is a "cliffhanger" setting up a sequel or something. Like do you not know how stories work?! Unless a story ends in the eradication of all reality, all story endings imply that more things happen from there. The story is still done.
