My Two First Loves, Ch. 1-3 AKA To Two of the Boys I've Loved Before
Bachelor #1, Mason, is very much the jock stereotype, and also happens to be your longtime crush. However, before you could cough up your puppy love crush to him, he dips and says that heโs got a girlfriend. Oof, your teenage dreams are crushed.
Once again PB spins The Wheelโข and this time, it lands on โdead parentsโ! Thatโs right folks, your mother is sadly no longer with you. Your father seems to be rather absent, and your sisterโs pretty chill. I bet yโall a nickel that sheโs involved with whatever tomfoolery Noahโs up to. Who is Noah, you ask? Keep reading and youโll find out.
Ladies and gentlemen, enter the female best friend! Ava Lawrence, who is bound to be either the third, โsurpriseโ (codeword for โsidelinedโ) LI, the โIโm only here to improve your fashionโ BFF, or the prime source of your exposition on whatโs going on in the world around you. Take your bets, people. Whichโll it be?
In a *shocking* turn of events, Ava is actually Masonโs girlfriend. How will MC get herself out of this one? Stay tuned to find out.
She runs into a drug dealer, thatโs how!
Bachelor #2, also known as Noah, saves you from the drug trouble and in return you can give him a tour of the school. I donโt know why, but the dialogue between him and MC felt really stilted? Like a really bad game of verbal ping pong. Something about it just felt unnatural.
I thought that treating this review like a game show would make me smile a little more. I was right. And in a surprise bonus round, PB spins The Wheelโข again! This time it (unsurprisingly) lands on โ*That* [White] Male LIโ! I should really make an updated version of this thing.
The past tense first-person writing shocked me for a bit but I think it was an interesting decision for this type of book. It gives off the coming-of-age vibe that a lot of these kinds of stories have. It didnโt work with StD, but it seems to be working with this one.
CGs are beautiful, as always. Say what you want about PB but the artists are talented.
How. The hell. Did PB stretch this book out so much that each chapter is shorter than a Witness chapter. I know itโs for the daily release schedule but come on. The bar is practically underground at this point.
I canโt believe that PB reused names for all of their main characters. Emma Hawkins, Mason Dalton, Mackenzie Harris, Ava Cunningham, and Noah Marshall all donโt deserve this. There are so many names in the world. And they reuse all of them. Hell, they even reused the Harris surname! What is this, the fucking Hunger Names?
Still disappointed that the two first loves are both male but hereโs to hoping MC will have her bi awakening so wlw players can somewhat enjoy themselves while reading this book. How much longer until a prioritized female LI, huh, PB? Still coughing up empty promises?
The fact that the entire main cast is race customizable (even though PB still never bothered to create new MC faces) deserves its own bullet point.
All in all this book is simple, cute, and not overly cheesy. Itโs chill. I didnโt want to make the same mistake I did with MotY and assume/judge a book by its cover but Iโm decently enjoying it. Fingers crossed it goes well.
