She is a plate of canapes for strangers to split amongst themselves, to be consumed in absentminded bites amidst meaningless conversation.

With their faces frozen in their best facsimile of a smile, they discard the bulk of her on an empty table, savouring nothing. She was barely touched, yet she has been thoroughly claimed.

"Look around you and be proud, child," her father tells her. "You are at the centre of this gala." (Where else would she be?)

She waits there in silence for the serving staff to clear her away.
