Quick on the uptake, indeed. Woon accepts the cup with a soft nod and takes a sip on the beverage, knowing that he’s being observed in every single detail. She’s been trained for that, to please her clients and study them in order to find their weak points and exploit them. A trait he understands and appreciates even.
So familiar.
“Happiness is merely a point of view. On the other hand, to be pleased with what you do is a plus from a dull life.”
The Sky Lord’s gaze moves to the right. There’s a presence behind the screen that leads to the corridor next to his room. The intruder, however, does not matter, because if they happen to listen to something that might be dangerous for his reputation, the building has been surrounded by two of his men controlling the roofs. With a single command, the one outside will be dead.
“Opportunities. Perhaps leaving a place like this that might feel like slavery to you, could lead you to another master’s claws. The situation might not improve.” The young man approaches a bit, both eyebrows slightly raised. “How can you make out the difference, then?”
Oh. He really is something else, something new. There were a number of visitors at the gisaeng house who came for the intellectual conversation — few, but there were some — which Choseon was more than happy to provide, but something about her new client is fascinating and intriguing and it makes her actually want to stay.
She notices his eyes darting to the right, and as discreetly as possible, she follows his gaze. He seems to have noticed something; Choseon herself can’t say what precisely attracted his attention, but the fact that something did is enough for her to know that he is no ordinary guest.
“Can anyone truly make out the difference before they try?” She asks him in turn. “True, leaving one prison could mean entering another. We are not blessed with foresight, and hindsight is bestowed upon us only after we have taken action.” It’s something that Choseon has thought about at length, about whether or not she truly wanted to leave Moran-gak. The answer lies somewhere in the realm of lying in wait.
“But would you rather be trapped in the same place forever, knowing you did not take the opportunity to find something new?” Choseon points out. “If one does not try, how does one know what could happen next?”
