Journal 13

I can translate my writing process to other work outside of the classroom by following an outline. The outline would be a plan. This semester I’ve gotten better at planning out my papers before I write them, so in life I can plan out my decisions before I make them. I’ve found that doing so always produces greater results, since everything won’t be “on the spot.”

Journal 12

For me the most challenging assignment has been the article rhetorical analysis. I’m accustomed to writing argumentative essays, but I never thought I’d be analyzing an argument in itself! The challenging part was figuring out what direction to go with the essay. I was confident in my writing ability, but I needed a direction to write in.

In saying this, I feel my writing has improved from a broad standpoint. I now can write a paper or write out sides of an argument from a neutral standpoint. Completing a rhetorical analysis really helped in me understand what goes into an article, and what goes into an analytical paper exactly.

Journal 11

A.I. technology produces a great amount of fear and disdain in the population. This is due to the lack of jobs they cause and the fear they produce in the population who are unaware of the range of their capabilities.

Refute:

- To start, A.I. does take away simple factory jobs but in turn creates jobs for maintenance and building of this technology. Lack of jobs is also due to human laziness.

- In the future, revenue produced from A.I. powered automation in corporations will grow exponentially within the next 10 years or so.

Evaluating a source is important in not only determining if a source is credible, but as well as how reliable your writing is itself. If someone doesn’t use a credible source, they’re paper loses it’s professionalism. By not evaluating a source you can tell if a paper is worth reading or not. That same logic can applied to the article as well.

This knowledge won’t change the way I read an article but it will make me more attentive to how credible a source is. With all the sources available on the internet, the majority of them most likely or incorrect, false, or not credible. From now on, for me at least, I will pay great attention to each article I refer to to make sure every source I use is credible.

This article refutes Littman's argument of A.I producing fear.

Author: Ben Hartwig

Audience: Anyone interested or afraid of A.I.

Purpose: To provide facts and information pertaining to the benefits of artificial technology as a whole rather than what to fear.

Setting: Hackr.io. A website and search engine dedicated to providing information all technology based and to provide learners with sources to learn skills.

Format: One large picture at the top of the article. A table of contents. Paragraphs are split into sections and each header is large and in bold.

Rhetorical Situation: The image is conveying the message of technology takeover. The audience of this image is people who’s jobs have been taken by the power of technology.

Rhetorical Appeals: I would say this image mostly pertains to ethos. The situation is not exactly ethical for human beings. We created jobs for humans, which should be completed by humans.

CRAP:

Contrast - The robot is the only figure in the picture with a face and details. Contrast between the importance of robots over the human working the job.

Repetition - The dark color is repetitive, no words so not much repetition can take place here.

Alignment - The robot is slightly above the human, to emphasize the fact that they are taking over the job. The figures are aligned centered vertically.

Proximity - The technology (Robot, laptop) are on the left side of the image, where as the human worker is on the right side of the image. Adds to contrast.

This image adds to the theme I’ve seen in our assigned articles. The advancements in technology has caused a loss of jobs, and could even lead to more detrimental effects in the future. Such as technology controlling most if all jobs that would regularly be assigned to people.

The advice that stuck out to me the most in “How to write the perfect sentence” was towards the beginning of the article in the George Orwell section. The quote was “Good prose is like a windowpane.” There’s something about the way this quote makes you think. Whenever we write any paper or sentence even, it’s interesting how most words are overlooked or “seen through.” That’s what makes them effective however, if you can see through a sentence, then it flows through the eyes and it’s easy to read.

In the past with peer reviews, most people haven’t put much effort into their review. However, the most helpful advice I’ve received referred to grammar. I feel in my writing I maybe use too many commas, or I use them where they don’t belong. Any suggestions involving that I’ve found very helpful.

The least helpful suggestions I’ve received are ones that advise me to re-write an entire section of my essay. This is not out of laziness, but I feel that re-writing an entire section is a bit of a waste of time. A proper suggestion in my opinion would be to advise me to maybe change a couple of sentences, or reword a sentence to better the flow of the paragraph.

Article Analysis Journal

The article I’m choosing to analyze is “'Rise of the Machines' Is Not a Likely Future" by Michael Littman. This article was brief, and didn’t exactly provide much statistics or experience in favor of the argument, but nonetheless I was interesting while reading the entire article. The author wanted to appeal to the audiences ethos, or emotion. He was stating that there is nothing to fear when worrying about robots and A.I. in the future. that argument I thought was also presented well. The audience wasn’t specific, but mainly for anyone who fears the future of A.I., and this article definitely reassured the people that there is nothing to worry about. My thesis would be somewhere along the lines of: The booming advancements in A.I. technology has produced an uproar of fear in the population, which in turn can be reassured by the FLI organization.

After reading the article about writing content, what surprised me most was how effective each technique was. I would read the examples of bad choices of writing, and then the better choices, and the better examples would sound completely more appealing. I think the best way to incorporate these techniques into my own writing would be to try and stay more conscious of the reader and think about what they would like to see rather than what only appeals to myself.

I’ll admit, my process for writing the letter to my younger self was a bit sloppy. I had little to no preparation, and I mostly wrote every paragraph on the fly. In the past, I usually do little preparation because I like seeing how well my mind can flow with the prompt. In the future however, I think it may be more important to outline a very rough draft of my essays. Or just giving a few sentences for each paragraph, so I know what to include when I’m writing my final draft.

Who has affected my writing

When it comes to technical writing, I’d have to say my teachers in the past affected me positively in helping me find my voice in writing. As goes for the creative side of my writing, I’d have to say my favorite authors have affected me in that area. Robert Kirkman is one that stands out. Though he is a comic author and not much writing goes into those (but a good amount), his way of writing and storytelling has really inspired me. He’s allowed me to find the kind of stories I really enjoy and I’d attempt to write like him one day.

My English Class Experience

In most English classes I’ve taken, we’ve mainly focused on grammar, sentences, and poems. I’ve never really been taught how to write a professional paper. I’ve only been told how to and given advice along the way. I think that is what writing is about though - finding your way. In the past, I haven’t struggled with finding topics to write about, but rather finding ways to write about them. Writing is easy for me when I can connect to what I’m writing and have freedom, but when I have to be professional it gives me restrictions, so I struggle a bit with that. I guess learning how to write and being professional goes hand-in-hand though.
