This is a funny old shot of me(right) and my brother (left) just before he moved to London about 8 years ago. I don’t think we have a serious photo together.

(obviously not taken with the x100t...)

So about 8 years on and he’s about to get married, so I thought i better go and see him

This was Mums house. She lived here for part of her chidhood.

As I said previously, the house is somewhat frozen in time but still slowly melting away

None lives here anymore, and it’s a bit sad. there are still small artifacts lying in and around the house giving hints of little stories from my childhood. The view is awesome, the only change is the windmills way out into the distance that seems a little surreal to be honest. kind of reminds me of a cyborg or something that is old and antiquated but now has a futuristic feel to it.

I have taken a few shots over the past year and I am going to use this slow”er” christmas break to somewhat diarise the past X100T images with a little commentary on the way..

So lets go!

The New X100F - should we upgrade?

I haven’t posted anything for a long long time, and now as the new Fujifilm X100F is to be released I thought I might just have my 2 cents on the new version.

As a lot of people do in this scenario I wondered whether or not it would be worth the upgrade from an X100T to the X100F Admittedly I am yet to lay my hands on a copy so you can take this as a grain of salt. Also this opinion is based on those who have an X100t and are thinking of upgrading.. If you do not have a X100 series camera.. just go and get it.. NOW.

Straight off the bat the only thing I see as a really good, worthy reason to upgrade is the sensor.. from a 16mp sensor to a 24mp sensor and newer technology I see that as the only reason to upgrade..maybe..it may have it drawbacks. The file size of the X100T are generally around 33-36MB which is quite large so I would expect the X100Fs file size to be somewhat larger again. And to be honest for the type of photography I use it for.. 16mp is enough.

Secondly.. it’s also about the buttons on the back. I don’t love the layout. As soon as I got the X100T, it didn’t stick to my hand very well and I bought the thumbgrip for it, which I think is a must have accessory. Luckily I don’t use the drive button very much as it is generally in Still image mode. As mentioned in a previous post I focus manually but still have the option of auto focusing by hitting the AEL/AFL button. Now the button I would use to back focus is right where the drive button used to be.

The image below is how I set up my camera. some items are doubled up but I have no need for video mode or macro mode so I would rather have those as basic settings

The joystick is also a pretty awesome feature.. but to me, as good as this camera should be... I don’t think it’s worth the upgrade (X100F below)

Just something a bit different and yeh, maybe a little boring…but also little technical.

- A two light, all natural setup, one behind the apple and one camera left and behind, shaping the roundness of the apple - “Figure to ground” allows the apple and the shadow to be prominent. - Dark negative space on the right of the frame also drawing the eye up to the apple which resides on the top left third of the frame. - The grain lines of the wooden table also act as leading lines up to the apple - I would have liked the shadow of the apple to be a bit longer and a lower ISO would have nice, but I’m ok with that

It’s not a great image my any means, but I still find it interesting, I guess for the reasons above.. because science

I like this image for the colour that runs in the top of the jacket and the wall. Also the diagonal line leading up to and passed the figure, because of the slow shutter the line runs through as well.

Manual Focus

Setting the camera to manual focus is quite a powerful tool, not only does it allow manually focus using either the “peaking” method or the “split view” method, I prefer the split view. this admittedly is a little nostalgic but where its great is that by pressing the AE/AF lock button on the back of the camera, it will still automatically focus when needed. This is generally called back focussing and also use this using my dslr. It allows more freedom when shooting

When in auto focus mode the camera wont shoot until it finds a target.

Manual focus lets you just shoot when your ready.. or almost ready

Loving the vertical lines in this image and also the orange lights in the building look blurry initially but are a slight illusion, the blue and orange contrast is also pleasing to me
