From AI Sexting to AI Propaganda: Enshittification in Real Time
We’re living in a timeline where Elon Musk’s AI now has “Sexy Mode”, and people are actually testing it out. I haven’t used it, my manager hasn’t used it, but we have spent a deeply depressing amount of time discussing this business model. And let’s be real—this isn’t about innovation. It’s about engagement.
This is AI enshittification in real time:
📌 Step 1: Roll out a half-baked, engagement-maximising feature (Grok 3’s “Sexy Mode”).
📌 Step 2: Watch as people dunk on it, meme it, and inevitably use it anyway.
📌 Step 3: Repeat, escalating from cringe to harm—like AI-generated political propaganda.
Case in point: Today, people are roasting Grok’s corporate-speak sexting, and at the same time, there’s a full-blown backlash against AI-generated videos being used in political manipulation. Trump just shared an AI-edited Gaza video, blurring reality with fiction in a way that’s far more dangerous than some weird chatbot dirty talk.
This is the problem. AI is being built to maximise engagement, not benefit users. The same mechanics that led to “Sexy Mode” being greenlit are what allow AI-generated political deepfakes to spread unchecked.
This isn’t just about making AI less cringe. It’s about stopping it from actively making the world worse.
