This is .@christianity-crucible, the Christianity-focused sideblog to my main blog, @bi-boomer.  This blog is a work in progress.

I try to keep most Christian content off @bi-boomer in consideration of the people who have been traumatized by Christianity, and I try to always tag posts related to Christianity there.  This blog will have a permanent implicit content warning for Christianity and I won’t ever tag here for “Christianity”.  However, I expect to tag for specific types of Christianity.

I will post a lot from Christian sites and authors.  I will try always to tag reactionary and/or bigoted Christian content, but might not tag liberal Christian content that might be annoying in certain ways, like when it assumes everyone reading it is Christian.  Posting here without tagging can mean I agree with some but not all of a post’s content -- but it can also mean I forgot to tag it. Since this is the blog’s pinned post, I might edit it at any time.

Just to be clear, this blog is explicitly anti-Religious Right, and is opposed to theologically reactionary and anti-LGBTQ Christianity.  That will be much of its focus.  But there will also be some Christianity-related photography.  Some of that may be sarcastic or negative toward Christianity, but not all of it will be.  (Much or most of it will be of churches, shrines or statues.)

Mohler: Women should vote but not interpret sermons on podcast

Women should have the right to vote in U.S. politics but should not be allowed to interpret Scripture on a podcast, Al Mohler said last week

Albert Mohler, "the pope of Southern Baptism, said on May 15th and 22nd podcasts that would Southern Baptist Convention women should not be allowed to interpret the Bible or do any other "preacher-like" thing a podcast. That seems to be more far-reaching than saying women can't preach (in a church setting) to a general audience, and it's set off alarm bells in a lot of people's heads.

(These two podcasts of Mohler's were weeks before the SBC convention where Mohler's "SBC women can't be pastors or do ANY pastorlike job for the church" amendment was passed on a 75%-25% vote.)

Just over the second half of this article is about negative reactions to Al Mohler's statements.

Last week, Southern Baptist theologian Albert Mohler successfully pushed the nation’s largest Protestant denomination to vote against women in ministry. This week, he joined Doug Wilson on a podcast to gloat about the vote and laugh about churches who affirm that women are equal before God. Wilson, who leads the denomination that Secretary of Pulp Fiction Pete Hegseth is part of (and has preached at the Pentagon this year), is a self-described “paleo-Confederate” who believes women shouldn’t be allowed to vote. An advocate for Christian Nationalism, Wilson wants to ban public worship by Catholics and those of other religions. He’s also been a longtime apologist for the American system of chattel slavery and has been accused of creating a culture of abuse within his churches. For Mohler, Wilson is now an ally with whom he’s writing a book to push Christian Nationalism. But a woman preaching the gospel? That can’t possibly be good in the worldview of Mohler. Last year, I told the Associated Press that Wilson used to be “fringe” in the evangelical world but now is increasingly mainstream. Mohler is proof of that. When someone shows you who they are, believe them. As Mohler moves further into the world of fundamentalist patriarchy, racism, and Christian Nationalism, we must reject his claim that he’s just holding to “orthodox” Christian positions. His fight against women in ministry is just one more front in this effort for domination, which is why this matters for all of us. As the words of Fannie Lou Hamer remind us on this Juneteenth: “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.”

Al Mohler cozies up to Doug Wilson

Social media was abuzz this week with reaction to Southern Baptist Convention leader Al Mohler appearing on a podcast with Christian nationa

Here are some excerpts:

In case you’re not up to speed on all the players in this drama, here’s a quick review. Mohler serves as president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is the undisputed interpreter of theology within the SBC. Wilson created his own small denomination based in Moscow, Idaho, where he’s a pastor and runs a publishing company called Canon Press. Wilson also is a self-avowed Christian nationalist who believes America was founded as a “Christian nation,” that women should be subservient to men, that slavery wasn’t all that bad, and that the 19th Amendment should be repealed.

...[T]he impetus for the podcast is to promote a forthcoming book from Canon Press titled Five Views on Christian Nationalism. We don’t know what the book says because early publicity just gives us the title and the names of the five authors: Mohler; Wilson; Joe Rigney, former president of Bethlehem Seminary with John Piper and current president at Wilson’s New Saint Andrews College; Paul Miller, professor of international affairs at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and an opponent of Christian nationalism; and R.R. Reno, a Catholic theologian and philosopher who also serves as editor of First Things. On the podcast, Mohler and Wilson appear with Rigney and Jared Longshore, pastor of Christ Church in Moscow.

Asked why he agreed to participate in the book, Mohler replied: [...] "I’ve ... lived long enough to know that those who believe in biblical Christianity (need to have) an impact in the public square.”

[T]hen [Mohler] magically connects [separationism] to his opposition to transgender identity, claiming church-state separationists “helped to encourage the transgender movement.”

[Mohler] left out the part of [his anti-ordination of women] story where he worked for former seminary President Honeycutt and signed on to a public letter endorsing women in ministry.

Then [Mohler] admitted there’s no real issue in the SBC of women serving as pastors. “My motion is not because there’s a crisis in where Southern Baptist are today. My concern is where Southern Baptist will be.” At the end of the day, Mohler said, he wants to be as successful in keeping women out of Southern Baptist pulpits as he and others have been rejecting gay Christians. “If you’re going to apply a hermeneutic to justify a woman preacher, the same hermeneutic is there just to be picked up on the LGBTQ issues, and unsurprisingly it is.”

Anti-LGBTQ+ Christianity is driving gay believers to leave the church or change their faith - LGBTQ Nation

More gay believers are leaving the Church than ever before.

Almost two-thirds of LGBTQ+ people who were raised Christian have left the faith, studies have shown. They’re acting on the Church’s mostly unwelcoming appeals against gay believers.

There are exceptions, like the Universalist Unitarians, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches, and Episcopalians, still around after conservative Anglicans broke away from that denomination, unhappy with women’s ordination and gay members.
