“Tanguero”

This illustration combines two of my loves: Phantom of the Opera and Argentine Tango. “Point of No Return” has something of a tango beat, and while listening to it recently, I sketched an image of The Phantom and Christine in a classic Argentine tango move (and one of my personal favorites), the leg wrap. It turned out rather nice, so I decided to render it completely.

I think the rough quality of the pencil lines fits with the raw emotions inherent in both the dance and the music, while the swirling cloak adds that dramatic aura that is also a signature of tango.

What a gift to step back into this music with Sierra Boggess @officialsierraboggess and sing our duet from Love Never Dies again after 16 years.

Remarkably, it didn't feel as though it had missed a beat. If anything, time has only deepened it.

The respect and affection I have for Sierra, as both an artist and a friend, runs deep. What has always struck me is her authenticity. On stage, she is utterly herself. Her concert was so beautifully crafted: effortlessly funny one moment, poignant and deeply moving the next.

Nights like these remind me how fortunate we are to share stories, songs, and a history that continues to evolve.

Here's hoping that one day the right show finds us again... and we find it.

“You know,” Raoul says, stirring his drink thoughtfully, “there’s still a very real chance he’s a fifty-seven-year-old man named Gary.”

Christine immediately groans.

“He’s twenty-seven!”

Raoul points at her. “You don’t know that.”

“I do know that,” Christine insists with a little laugh.

“Why because he told you he was?” Christine opens her mouth then closes it and Raoul says, smugly, “Exactly.”

Meg snorts into her soda and Raoul continues.

“What if he’s a romance scammer?”

Christine rolls her eyes.

“He’s not a romance scammer!”

“That’s exactly what someone being scammed would say,” Raoul insists as he sits up on his stool and taps the counter.

“Raoul!”

“I’m serious. First it’s movie nights. Then it’s I love you’s… next thing you know he’s asking if you can wire him three thousand dollars because he’s trapped on an oil rig.”
