And well… I seriously doubt you have a calibrator for all this.” She shrugged a bit throwing out words that just slipped off her tongue getting excited about all the building talk. “Sorry, I just get a little excited about things like this. I mean, like that thing you had to track phones. I already seen so many things I could add on to help. You should need to learn a few computer hacks and we would be miles ahead of anyone else.”

“Hey, whoa, don’t doubt my calibrator,” he laughed. However, he definitely could take some stuff apart for springs and coils... And hopefully Dallon wouldn’t notice. “No, I... I love how excited you are! I mean, I’ve been trying to get some lessons in hacking but for whatever reason, people aren’t too keen to reveal that they know how to hack.”

Jack couldn’t help but roll his eyes slightly. “Oh god.” he mumbled. He knew the name. But it wasn’t something that just impressed him. “Well let’s see if you still got your touch kid.” He said and moved to stand up. “Take my number. Call me moment you find something else out.”

Finally taking back his notes and glaring up at the cop, Christopher only nodded at the request, “Yeah, of course. And you call me if you need me, I guess. Have a good afternoon, sir.”

Jack just nodded slightly as he spoke. “That is actually pretty useful. You’re not so bad at this huh?” he asked him with a bit of a smirk. “I doubt it’s a coincidence with everything going on. Obviously this person has something against our complex.” He said shaking his head. 

“Of course, I’m not bad at this,” he rolled his eyes. “I’m...” He looked around, making sure no one he’d been looking into in his spare time was around before saying, “I’m Chip. From Chip and Dale Investigators. I’ve been doing this stuff since college. Normally, I’m just calling you guys at the end to lock someone up.”

Gale just gave him another smile squeezing him back. “Of course. I mean, we have a friendship Chris. I didn’t just like you because you were a great kisser. Which you are in fact… a great kisser.” She paused reaching up to put a hand on his cheek. “I’m happy for you. Really. You two are soulmates.”

“Soulmates. You know, I think I’m starting to believe in those,” he replied with a small laugh, leaning into the hand on his cheek if only briefly. “So, I was promised there were strange gadgets in this apartment? Any chance I can see?”

“Well I mean if you want your name in for an assist we can work something out.” he said as he spoke about his boyfriend not knowing. “Though I suppose with that bit of information you wouldn’t want him knowing. So maybe it would be best if I did get the glory. But don’t worry I won’t tell him.”

Christopher considered his offer for a moment before shrugging, “I mean, he was going to find out if I did it alone anyway... I was just hoping if I solved it he would realize that, I don’t know, I can still do it. Stop worrying about me so much. I’d say we have time for me to decide but I think some of the stuff I’ve found might bring this case closed soon.”

“Oh I am sure you have.” He said looking over the notes a bit more. “I am proposing you research for me. You turn your leads into me. And I will get you into places you need to be. You have my protection and you don’t get arrested for shit.”

“And you take all the credit for it,” Christopher sighed. This wasn’t the best situation, but he knew if he wanted to get the answers, he’d have to comply. “Fine, it’s a good deal to me, I guess. But, there’s a condition, no one can know. My boyfriend-- he thinks I quit this shit.”

Gale gave him a soft smile and moved to take his hand in her own. “Look I would rather you have kissed me, and shown me all that, and you be with him, then to never had experienced any of it.” She gave his hand a small squeeze. “You are going to be in my life. Regardless ok?” He was important to her now. She wouldn’t just let him go like that. 

The gentle hand squeeze was enough. Chris felt himself forgive himself a little before he reached forward and pulled her into a tight hug. “You’re the best, Gale. And, I’m really happy you didn’t kick me out because I’m hard to remove from someone’s life once I’ve sort of... Stuck myself there.”

Jack moved to sit down next to the guy and looked over his notes. “You’re pretty good at this.” He commented as he ran a hand through his hair. “I have a proposition for you. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.”

“I’ve solved many murders, sir,” he stated quietly. Even if the cop knew he was a journalist, that didn’t mean the cop knew which journalist he was-- specifically not the meddling half of a duo. “What exactly are you proposing with that?”

But she was a big girl, and she would put on her big girl panties. “For starters, you don’t always mess up. Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are a great guy. And secondly, it’s okay. We can be friends.” 

“But, I knew it too. So, I shouldn’t have kissed you back or shown you my investigation stuff-- I mean, I don’t regret either thing. But, does that make me messed up?” He asked, leaning against the nearest wall and looking over to her. “And you’re an amazing girl. I was honestly scared I’d walk over here and you’d tell me you never want to see me again.”

“Chris, just calm down and breathe please.” She said stepping back. “Come on inside.” She tried her best to piece together what he was saying. “So you and Dallon are back together?” She said forcing a small smile. Sure, she was sad about it. But she knew she couldn’t compete with the other. He owned Chris’s heart. “It’s okay. I mean, I am happy you two are working things out.” She said with a small smile.

Taking a deep breath, he followed the blonde inside, taking a good look around since he wasn’t sure of the last time he’d been over. In fact, he was sure she usually visited him. Maybe, if things worked out that day, he would get to see some of her gadgets. If she didn’t hate him. “Yes, we... We got back together. I wasn’t expecting it, otherwise I wouldn’t have dragged you along or kissed you. Normally, I can tell what he’s thinking and I thought he was thinking... Fuck off Chris. Because of how bad I always mess up.”

Gale had been trying to give Chris space like he asked while he figured things out. It was honestly not the end of the world for her, though she did miss spending time with him. She knew he had history with Dallon, and that given the chance she didn’t want to come between them. So if space made that better than great. It just sucked because she never expected her life to become what it had. She heard her door, and Chris’s voice before getting up to open it. Her heart thudding against her chest. “Oh um hi, how are you?”

“Terrible-- I mean, great-- I mean... I deleted my Tinder account.” Smooth one, Chris. He stood there for a moment, shock on his face from what he had said before clearing his throat. “I mean, it’s... We’re still friends right? Even if I can’t take you on the promised Tinder date or do all the Tinder-y things? Because... Dallon and I--” He couldn’t think of how to phrase it, but he felt like an ass. Springing something on her again just like impulsive Chris does.

It had been over a week since the awkward encounter between himself, Gale, and Dallon. He’d very clearly cleared the air with Dallon, but with his other friend... She didn’t exactly live with him for that convenience. Finally, with a day off of work and a day off from investigating, Chris found himself outside her door. Slowly and almost nervously, he tapped his knuckles against it, “Gale, you home?”
