the reason he detested royalty was reality, not their conceptual existence. he hated the politics, the fake images and careful plays. the only thing that he had always wanted was the freedom of doing as he pleased, not as others saw him fit to do. independence, to a degree, was the reason why he tended to think himself above his sister. she stuck to rules and the such, went more conventional ways while he simply did not accept others standing in his way. he WAS royal, he was proud and powerful and cunning and he was completely aware of it— it only happened to be the case that he thought himself above all those others, too, and yet they kept biting at his heels and tying him down. biyu’s words sent a brief flash of anger through him. he had spent years collecting, gathering things to expose them for EVERYTHING, very much intended on including himself for good measure, did not mean to waste a single dirty little secret. to think that an unforgivable curse and the absolute peak of pain was what it took for his sister to finally act, and in a way that made years of suffering seem USELESS was beyond enraging. the few seconds of tightly curled fingers and a fastened pulse were enough for ashtor to raise his head, form curling a little more tightly around the slytherin’s neck, nearly earning a hiss form him, though he swallowed it and let GO. he could not claim not to have considered this outcome a possibility, after all. he half wished he could have seen their faces. things would have been different between the siblings then, too, but the way it was left him feeling cold. at leas tit was over with. he could always make a trip to bring in more evidence, for good measure. it was a possibility to consider when he felt stronger again. for the time being the whispers of how pathetic she looked and how she was no better than them, stripping him of that one satisfaction at the end of it all whirred through his head, spiteful and sharp, but weak. she WAS softer than him, but he was not made of stone entirely, either. it took him a somewhat begrudging exhale before he opened one hand, resting it on the bed near her in an effort to keep her hands from clutching the chair further.
She did believe she had NO ONE in the world anymore, no family to fall back on to, shunned for the action she took, for reaching her threshold of what she was willing to stand, what she could turn a blind eye too. Nor did she have that many FRIENDS she could count on, not one that she’d actually trust, except perhaps Nova who was just as cold as she was. And Yulan--- well undoubtedly he hated her more now; hated her for not being able to stand up to them in the past and hated her from stripping him of any means of vengeance he could still have. She never could understand why he kept rebelling, why he kept doing EVERYTHING they didn’t want them to do when he knew what the consequences would be, what he would have to suffer for his misbehaviour but she thought she understood now.
Because despite it all, despite all the loneliness that overtook her, despite the fact that she felt more of a mess than a human being worthy of calling herself NOBLE, despite losing EVERYTHING she thought she had, even the ONE THING that felt more like a part of her than anything else -- she’d do it again.
She wasn’t sure why. She was neither selfless or particularly caring and she and Yulan had never been CLOSE but thinking that the torture he had to endure would have been repeated over and over again, possibly until he’d be driven mad made her feel sick, made her feel cold and angry. And YES, she lost JADE, the one thing in the world that meant to her more than anything, her companion and friend, her EXTENSION to a degree no one would understand but perhaps YULAN himself. And he would leave her, too, she thought, in his anger, in his apathy, leaving her behind like NOTHING; she was almost certain of it. But it seemed like her brother still had a few surprises left in him, dragging her out of her spiral of pity and self loathing and sadness to stare at the offered hand for a moment, lips parted in surprise and hands immediately relaxing.
Hesitantly, her fingers lifted, paused in the air before they slowly fell against his palm, tips barely touching the centre of his hand as her shoulders begun to shake with effort to keep a new stream of tears from rolling down her cheeks. She still thought she’d be left alone after this, after school is out and they’d have to go back ‘home’ but at least, with this, she knew she still had him SOMEWHERE in the world, if only barely. ❛ They killed Jade. ❜ She heard herself whisper, eyes closing to try and stop the tears that rolled down her cheeks despite it all. ❛ She just-- she’s gone. ❜ She wasn’t sure why she was telling him this, when she had promised herself she would not speak of her own punishment to him but the words spilled off her tongue before she could stop them, the rest suffocated when her teeth dug deeply on the inside of her lower lip to keep herself from speaking again.

family was uncomfortable. he was influenced heavily by his own, namely by his parents, and obviously negatively so. he knew it was not the standard, others were happier or whatever, but it did not make a difference regarding his situation. he did not want children, barely considered marrying, only knew who he wanted to stick with. the rest could be disposed, the rest needed to be gone— not for him only but for good. not to save others but in VENGEANCE. tossing him about, breaking bones and skin, inflicting pain even he did not want to speak about on him——- the least they deserved was to see their everything crumble before them. his disposition towards them was VERY clear. the adults were rotten to the core, all children that came after them were raised avoiding the mistakes they had made before. they were too young and practically innocent, would be unaffected but ripped from that construct they had forced them into, thrown into something of a different world. perhaps it was a little harsh to the young ones, but it was both the only way and a means of living out his SPITE. what irritated him to the very end, however, was his SISTER. disregarding that they were close in age and grew up vaguely similarly, he was no OBLIVIOUS nor blind. he knew her heart was softer than she let on, much softer than his. he was not gentle enough to not hold a spark of bitterness at the fact that he seemed to battle his parents on his own thus far but ultimately knew he was provoking what punishment he received while she knew to survive without it. especially knowing the pain first-hand, he could not fault her for avoiding it. yulan was tired beyond belief but sleep was not an option. they had gone too far that time and it had left his stomach turning. they barely managed to force him into eating sufficiently since he was admitted, the bruises were dying down and his bones were mending. yet, not even ashtor dared to speak much with him, perhaps out of guilt, perhaps out of consideration. nobody had really felt like talking to him, perhaps because he radiated apathy and exhaustion, perhaps he did not look particularly inviting or friendly. that did not change when his sister made her way to him. sat straight in his bed, to the very top of his head, ashtor curled around his neck silently, he merely offered her a steady gaze, the question one he did not want to waste energy on.
She always saw herself and Yulan as EQUALS. Both pure, both proud, both coming from influence and power, both knowing exactly what to do with it, both looking the part as well, she saw little difference between the two but the few that distinguished them. The fact that he was far more apathetic, or violent, far more direct in his quest where she preferred the shadows, the dark, the secrets and the politics, where her hands would stay CLEAN even if her conscience would not. She saw OTHERS as beneath her, few who were her equals and none who were above her. That was until that very moment, when Yulan still managed to sit straight and proud and vibrating royalty off of the last hair on his body and she seemed so meek and small next to him.
A mess. She almost felt like bowing in front of him.
She was never weak, always masked herself and her emotions well but she could not fight back the tears that prickled at the corner of her eyes, or hide the way her hands trembled. She could not bring herself to look him in the eye either, knowing she ALLOWED his abuse to continue, to escalate this FAR that it had her own stomach churning. Her parents were cruel, she knew the such and she had always been frightened of them but never APPALLED, at least not on the same level as she was then. She fidgeted in front of him, her words stuck in the depth of her throat and she wished she had brought JADE with her to offer her a sense of calmness, familiarity. She would be all she’ll have left after this.
❛ They’re in Azkaban. ❜ There was no reason to beat around the bush, no point in trying to stall the inevitable with small talk neither of them wanted, still her fingers dug into the chair, a hiccup swallowed and an only sniffle allowed before she willed herself to turn to stone, and simply continue with how she began. ❛ Mum and dad. I sent in an anonymous tip of all the shit they had going and the aurors raided our home. I didn’t mention you or what they were doing to you, though. ❜
SHE HESITATED TO GO INSIDE. She must have been standing in front on the hospital wing for at least 15 minutes, her usually carefully styled hair messy and loose, her complexion paler than usual and her eyes wide, tired, somewhat frightened. Red crescent marks glared from her skin, a dried trail of blood bright and catching along her wrist -- the signs of her nerves, of her fear, of her struggle. She swayed between being horrified of what she had done -- throwing away her family, her future, her prospects, reputation, a line to fall back on -- and PROUD, certain she had FINALLY done the RIGHT thing. For HER brother. Who had suffered while she watched on the sidelines for YEARS because she was too afraid of losing all she had and receiving the same treatment he was if she DID stand up.
Well she did now. For better or for worse. There was nothing left of the Cho name but THEM.
Biyu was certain Yulan will toss her aside as well once he learnt what she had done. She did not like HER or cared for her as his SISTER, she was aware but she told herself that it was okay ( even if it was NOT. even if she actually NEEDED him the MOST she ever did now in her life. to keep her from feeling so lost and alone and panicked ), he deserved a break from the family, her included. Deserved happiness he never got. Still. She wanted to cling to the little sliver of familiarity she had before losing it all, hesitating to confront him with the truth now that it was out. She was scared of being alone, but it did her no good to stay standing still, listening to the loud, echoing clock tick away the seconds and minutes, seeing more blood stream down her porcelain skin. She sighed, smeared it off and took in a deep breath before she pushed inside.
Her steps were small, timid, yet they still seemed to echo against the walls of the wing, louder and louder with each click of her shoes against marble, telling her she was growing closer and closer to losing EVERYTHING. It was fine, she kept repeating, she will rebuild, make a better name for herself, for the family, expand like her parents could only ever dream. She didn’t need Yulan. She did not. And yet she still stood over his bed, her mouth opening and closing, no sound coming out of her lips, she felt dizzy, tired, the stress, the loss, the fear catching up to her until it forced her to lower herself to the chair next to his bed, her always high head hanging low, staring at her bitten, torn nails. ❛ How are you doing? ❜ She managed to force out with a weak, soft voice.

A charity party was cheap, rich people gathering in a lavish location, surrounded by media that hurried to record how generous & great they all were when they gave away a small dent of their wealth, just to feel a little better about themselves before they continued to plague the earth with their misdeeds. Hypocrisy was allowed, she thought, slipping another successfully charmed business card into her hand purse, when she realised it; after all she had been a host many times to such parties in her long, long past. Taking a tall glass of champagne from one of the passing busboys, Biyu scanned the crowd of rich & powerful with a pleasant smile on her cheeks -- that is until her gaze fell on a familiar face few steps away from her.
A sneer tried to fight itself onto her features but she was the picture-perfect example of composure & poise, which was more than she could say about her brother. Decades past since their last run-in, years filled with peace & happiness with the occasional shake up in her reality, a reminder that she, unfortunately was not the last of her immediate family roaming the old grounds. ❛ Wow, ❜ she hummed, loud enough for the air to carry her voice to Yulan, her head tilted to the side with a cold smile curving her full lips. ❛ I thought this was an respectable event. Clearly trash has nothing to do in this place. ❜

❥❱❱ STRANGER ❛ @chuantcng
—NEW HAVEN unfolded in front of eleanor like the first page of a book. drenched in cold silver light, the city seemed unreal and dangerous like a knife, but also clean and promising. many cities, she had learned in the centuries of the existence, changed their faces throughout the day. exhaling and watching how the cloud of her breath danced away, she brushed a strand of her hair away and gripped her magazine ( the newest issue of a medical publication; her interest had never waned ) a little tighter when a breeze picked up. whatever would happen today, she would not let her morning be ruined by her cherished possession’s destruction.
finally reaching her destination, one of the many hidden treasures — this time: one of the parks — new haven offered, she found herself looking at someone else, someone who had apparently found the same large pond inhabited by swans she had grown fond of ever since she had first come across of it, a week after she had moved out of auburn’s old apartment and into the bigger apartment even further west. ❛ excuse me, miss, ❜ she started, ❛ but would you mind sharing that bench with me? ❜
HAVEN. WHAT A misleading name. There was nothing safe or favourable in the city filled with dirt and smog, where the stench of gasoline puffed into the air and car horn disturbed her peaceful thought process. She detested every corner of the city, every darkened alley that offered more shadow to the criminal and every high rise building that disrupted her view of the horizon. But the fat and the rich decided that the provincial life in lavish mansions that Biyu much preferred were not for them anymore and MOVED into the tight streets of cities. All packed together like sardines, nice and cosy. Biyu hated it.
Finding quiet, remote corners in these cities was a priority of hers and it was no wonder she spotted the solitary park in her first week of moving to NEW HAVEN.
OF COURSE, AS with everything, her peace & solitude were quickly interrupted, her focus pulled away from the pages of her book to the approaching footsteps. Her jaw clenched subtly, annoyance & irritation flushing through her veins in waves but no amount of frustration would let the royal destroy her perfect mask. Before the woman even spoke, Biyu’s expression relaxed, eyes still scanning over the inked words on white pages until her words pulled her attention towards her. Yes she would mind. As if she had the right to share the same space as her. But this was hardly enough for her to crack, smiling warmly despite her cold thoughts and moving her purse to her other side, giving the woman enough room to sit at a distance. ❛ Wouldn’t mind at all. ❜ She chirped, sitting closer to the armrest of the bench. ❛ They should really invest a little more into this park. Another bench wouldn’t hurt. ❜
