Productive August | 2.8.18 My extensive sticky note collection! Not sure if I should be proud or worried... do you have more or less than this?
tips for timed essays?
Sure! Hereâs a few tips for timed essays (both substantive and procedural) tips;
1. SEX MethodÂ
Keep a strict structure for your body paragraphs.Â
Will help you avoid âramblingâ and going off topic bcÂ
Its basically 4 basic sentences from which you can expand and elaborate on.Â
Ensures that your body paragraphs reinforce your thesisÂ
Ensures that your arguments are relevantÂ
METHOD
State: Topic Sentence. What is this body paragraph about? What argument are you trying to present in this paragraph?Â
Example:Â Examples which support your claim (topic sentence).Â
eXplain:Â Link argument/ point back to your thesis. How does the example illustrate your thesis argument? To what extent? Why? If you canât link it back to your thesis then reconsider this paragraph srsly.Â
(YES IM AWARE IT SHOULD BE âS.E.Eâ but people get confused with the two âeâsâ) Â
2. PlanÂ
No matter the time limit, set aside a few minutes to scribble down a plan.Â
Highlight the keywords in the qu to ensure youâre addressing the quÂ
State your thesis
Dot point your paragraphs (e.g. I used to just quickly list the topic of each body para + 3 sub points as per above)Â
+ if/when you run out of time you can quickly scramble and rewrite what you had in your planÂ
3. Introduction
Basic structureÂ
1. General Context (optional)Â
2. ThesisÂ
3. Signpost your structure (e.g. _____ will be illustrated by reference to B1, B2, B3)
4. Concluding line (e.g. In essence, analysis/comparison/distinctions between____will illustrate_____)
In a timed exam you donât have the luxury of âwriting your essay and then going back and doing your introductionâ. Do it first.
Why? Because it will give your examiner a good âmindmapâ of your essay. If you donât finish your essay, your examiner will be able to ascertain your argument (or where it was going) through your introduction.Â
4. ConclusionÂ
Basic StructureÂ
OpeningÂ
Re-state ThesisÂ
Recanvas body paragraph arguments (basically go through your topic sentence)Â
ConcludeÂ
Typically at the high school level, you are strongly advised against introducing new ideas in your conclusion
In some select disciplines, you are encouraged to talk about âthematic linksâ and âfurther research/ quâ in your conclusionÂ
5. Be strict with your timeÂ
Divide your time.Â
If you know the breakdown of the exam prior to the day, then write down the exact time.
e.g. 9am start time, 60 min exam
9:05 - Finish Plan
9:15 - Finish Intro
9:27 - Finish Body Paragraph 1Â
9:39 - Finish Body Paragraph 2Â
9:51 - Finish Body Paragraph 3
10:00 - Finish ConclusionÂ
+ ofc proof reading timeÂ
6. BRING A FREAKINâ WATCH THAT WORKSÂ
SELF EXPLANATORYÂ
7. PensÂ
Get a pen which wonât jam on you
Also have like 14706817468 spares.Â
I also like pens of different grip diameters - switching pens halfway through helps me relax my grip and avoid crampsÂ
Hope that helps!
