Festival O'Pizza
IB: This Saturday (11/22/14) Austin will be hosing a Carnival O'Pizza!
The event will be hosted at Home Slice, a pizza place in Austin on South Congress. Regular operating hours will apply but there will also be a pizza eating contest, dough tossing contest, raffle prizes, carnival games and face painting.
All the money made at the festival will go to the Austin Bat Caves!
Cioccoshow 2014
RC: Cioccoshow, a chocolate fair held in Bologna within the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna has commenced its annual run, beginning on November 12th through to the 16th. Cioccoshow is a chocolate fair in which chocolatiers from all over Italy come to gather to exhibit their chocolate creations. This fair exhibits creative takes on chocolate, through variations in shape, size and flavor of chocolate.
Cioccoshow goes on for five days in a Willy Wonka-esque style everyone near Bologna on the third week of November. Cioccoshow features a Chocolate Library with over 300 books on chocolate, ranging from cook books to children’s stories like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. There are learning course that you can take to expand your knowledge on chocolate whether it's recipes or just chocolate trivia. Cioccoshow holds events where some of Italy's finest chocolatiers can show off their new creations and win titles such as "Best Cherry Praline" or "Best Innovative Chocolate". The prize for this competition is your weight in chocolate!
Personally as a fellow chocoholic, this fair is heaven on Earth for me. I wish I lived in or at least was in Italy during the time of this fair.

Do You Pizzoccheri?
"Do You Pizzoccheri? If not, then perhaps you should" is an article written by Alex Roe and published in the "Italy Chronicles." As i'm sure you know, as we've approached winter this year we have been hit with a sudden case of extremely cold weather. With the coming of every cold front it is common tradition for us to change our eating habits in order to compliment the cooling weather, and in the article Alex Roe decides to share one particular dish of his that he not only describes as being ideal for winter weather, but that's also full of Italian taste and tradition. ER: "The Fantasy Italy" is an article that appeared in the The New York Times Magazine in August. Writer Elisabeth Rosenthal talks about her experience with the Italian food sensation known as Eataly and compares it to her experience of shopping and dining while living in Italy. Rosenthal concludes that Eataly has both its advantages and disadvantages when compared to the real thing.
Oscar Farinetti is the founder of Eataly and opened the first store in 2007. There are 27 stores around the world including some in New York and Chicago. Essentially Eataly is where you can find many Italian food shops and restaurants all under the same roof. They even have a website where customers are able to order goodies online.
I had no idea this existed but my tummy is growling just thinking about Italian food. I think it would be a cool and interesting experience to go to an Eataly store. I also appreciate the name "Eataly" because it is a pun.

Truffle Fair in Alba, Italy
IB: Beginning October 11 and through November 16 Alba is holding a food fair devoted to the Alba White Truffle. The event is held every year. Truffles are put on display, and there are cooking demonstrations and wine tastings to accompany the resulting dishes. Guided tours are led throughout Alba for tourists and visitors to learn about the history of the region and why they care so much about a truffle.
Part of the festival is a donkey race, an old form of entertainment and competition between Alba's districts. There is also a "clothing" of Lady Alba, who is meant to represent the city and receive gifts from each district.
I've never had a truffle, but this just looks like an amazing cultural experience.

Italy's restaurants rack up Michelin stars
Italian restaurants have always been known to have an exceptional taste in food, and this year they manage to keep true to that by obtaining 29 new spots in the 2015 edition of the Michelin guidebook. The 2015 guide was presented in Milan this Tuesday. As many of you know, getting a Michelin star is big news and getting or losing a star could potentially determine the fate of your restaurant. Having Michelin stars is the best form of recognition in the world of food and restaurants can be given up to 3 stars should they provide exceptional cuisine. Having these stars will without a doubt boost clientele and it's great to know that Italy is full of restaurants with much potential. Italy now boasts 332 restaurants, gaining 27 new 1 star restaurants and two new 2 star restaurants this year. With this book in hand you can be sure to find all sorts of dynamic and innovative cuisine all over Italy.

Mandola's Italian
Mandola's Italian is an authentic Italian grocery and one of their locations is near The University of Texas at Austin campus, but Mandola's is not just a grocery store. Once inside, you will find that Mandola's is a deli, coffee bar, and restaurant as well. With such a convenient location, this is where many UT students go to get their gelato fix. Besides gelato, Mandola's also has a wide selection of meats, cheeses, pastries, pasta, pizza, and many more authentic Italian foods. Their most popular pizza is the Margherita. Named after Queen Margherita, the pizza is topped with marinara, mozzarella, and basil to represent the colors of the Italian flag. The figure heads of Mandola's Italian are Damian and Trina Mandola. They bring with them a lot of previous experience in the culinary field and opened Mandola's Italian to promote their Italian culture and to provide a warm environment for their customers.
Dolce Neve-Local Italian Gelato
In January of this year, a new gelato shop opened, Dolce Neve, in South Austin. It is a family-owned gelateria by siblings Francesca and Marco Fe rrarese and Francesca’s fiancée, Leo Silvestrini. Their philosophy is to prepare their gelato as it would be prepared in Italy, using only original Italian recipes and traditional processes.
At Dolce Neve , they use the traditional Italian handcrafted mixing and freezing process “mantecazione verticale” in which only vertical batch freezers are used as opposed to the industrial horizontal batch freezers. By using the vertical freezer, more air is naturally incorporated in order to create a creamier gelato. Since each gelato takes more time to make with the vertical batch and prepared by hand, the owners of Dolce Neve like to show off by “making it in front of everyone” Customer can watch their gelato be created before them from scratch.
At Dolce Neve quality is chosen over quantity. Unlike most gelato shops where 50+ flavors are offered, only 18 are offered at Dolce Neve because they are handcrafted daily as needed.

Austin's ~Pieous~
IB: This month the Austin Chronicle let out a new list of 15 restaurants, one of which is Pieous, an artisanal Italian-style pizzas and American pies. Located off of Highway 290 Pieous uses homemade mozzarella and a sourdough crust.
Pieous opened around March of 2013 and is still making into reviews of new and interesting places to eat in Austin. Other than pizzas there's American style desserts like pecan or blueberry pies, cookies and pastries.
The most popular pizza seems to be the one with bacon marmalade, gorgonzola and arugula.

ER: Italians start their day with a healthy breakfast that provides them with enough energy for the morning. Some Italians eat breakfast at home but most eat at a bar while standing up. Typical Italian breakfasts do not take long to eat and Italians can quickly go on with their day. A croissant paired with a cappuccino makes up the traditional Italian breakfast. The croissant can be plain or filled with jam, cream, or chocolate. In Italy, a cappuccino is considered a breakfast drink and most do not consume it after 11am. Different regions in Italy have different specialties when it comes to breakfast. Compared to Italy, a typical breakfast in America is larger and contains more calories. For tourists, a continental breakfast is offered in most hotels. Even though it is light, a typical Italian breakfast is still filling, but in a healthy way. Unlike Americans, Italians see breakfast and lunch as two completely different things so do not expect to have brunch when traveling to Italy.
Sweet Ricotta Cheescake- Torta di Ricotta
RC: I have a bit of a sweet tooth and cheesecake is my favorite dessert. So, I searched up the Italian equivalent of it and came across the Torta di Ricotta. It is also known as the “Torta di Pasqua” because it is an Easter tradition.
Throughout the holiday season of Thanksgiving and Christmas is when my mom and I bake cheesecakes. This past Christmas we tried a new recipe and this is definitely a new recipe to try for the upcoming holiday season. The difference between the ricotta and the American cheesecake is that the ricotta contains a filling and dough instead of a crust like the American cheesecake. As a finishing touch the ricotta is usually topped with sifted confectioner’s sugar. The ricotta does not always have to look like the one above, in most cases it mostly resembles the American version.
Breakfast Prosciutto Pizza
IB: Breakfast pizza is an amazing idea, bringing two great things together in a circle of happiness. Once I actually figure out the kinks for my oven I want to work on my pizza baking skills. I'll have to put this on my list of recipes, although I can never get into eggs sunny-side up. Something about the yolk solidifying on its own is just not my cup of tea.
The recipe also calls for lemon juice, which probably doesn't make sense until it's all cooked together. Gladly, the recipe directions are pretty thorough so hopefully I don't mess up too badly.
Other than the eggs and lemon juice I think this looks like a pretty solid breakfast to have with coffee. I would definitely save half for lunch. I'm not sure how Italian the pizza is other than the prosciutto but it looks pretty good.

Abbiamo scelto il tema del cibo perche l'italia ha molte ricette deliziose, ma secondo me io personalmente l'ho scelto perché mi piace mangiare! Pensiamo che possiamo scoprire molte fatti e storie interessante del cibo italiano, e anche vogliamo cucinare qualcosa di buono.
In UT sono studente di matematica, ma non sono interamente sicuro del mio major. Voglio fare qualunque cosa nella mia carriera. Voglio solo sufficiente soldi per una bella casa, un computer, e per molti video giochi.
Oggi l'italia a molto rilevante nel mondo per tutti i suoi monumenti storici e le sue spiagge bellissime. Molte persone vogliono viaggiare a Italia.

Il cibo nella cultura italiana è molto importante perche c'è molta storia in ogni piatto. Il mio piatto italiano preferito è la pizza margherita perché molto simplice e deliziosa.
