Character Creator Chat: PSO2 NG!
[Previous Post] [First Post] [Next Post]
Wow, it's been a while since I've done one of these, but were back!
Lets take a look at the character creator for Phantasy star online 2:
The first thing you need to to when starting is to select a server (ship)
I've played this game before, and used up all 3 of my f2p character slots
(And wow, my design choices were...interesting back then XD)
anyways, I've removed all her items, and now we'll delete her and start anew:
...and this is when I learned, there's a 24 hour wait for your character to actually be removed, and the slot will not open until that time:
Great for preventing accidental removals, but kinda annoying for me right now.
So I'll be back tomorrow...
-----
Ok, well it's been a few days, but now I'm back, let's get started!
Our first choice is if we want to enable the cell shading feature:
I do think it looks a little better, but as it's just post-processing and PSO2 did not originally include it, we'll go without.
We have a 24 presets with a bunch of style for the games 4 races:
And while there are 4 races, they're pretty much split into two groups:
Humans, Newmans and Deumans are in the 'humanoid' categories, able to wear all standard fashion without issue,
However, Casts are syentic lifeforms, and have to 'adopt a human form' that changes their appearance in order to wear humanoid outfits,
Additionally, I believe their limited to wearing full (pre-made) outfits, rather than being able to mix and match with outfit parts. Instead of being able to use outfit parts, they have mechanical looking cast parts exclusive to their race that can change up their look. These races also had specific abilities back in original PSO2, But in New Genesis the races are functionally identical.
After selecting a preset, you then have the option to just stick with the preset, or to move on to a detailed or simplified character creation process:
(Left Simplified / Right Detailed)
The 'Simplified' option still offers a fair amount of options to adjust,
As well as warping for body proportions.
But the 'detailed' section offer extra sections to work with as well as sliders for precise adjustments.
We'll be going with Detailed today, And with how many options I see this may be another 2-part post.
So let's take it from the top, starting with head options:
We have three pages of presets comprising both humanoid and cast style faces, with both feminine and masculine styling.
You may notice that some of these look a lot more modern than others, the leaner ones with the 'N' in the bottom right cornder are ones made for the game's 2021 refresh 'New Genesis' (NG)
While the other ones are designed for the base 2012 Phantasy Star online experience. Since people could import their character, and can travel between both versions of the game, all the legacy cosmetics and character features are kept.
However, using I believe there are some restrictions, such as using a pso2 body or face will restrict you from trying new eyes or other cosmetic features from NG, and if you put an original PSO2 outfit on a NG body, you'll be switched to a compatible base pso2 body
It's a little confusing, so we'll just stick to all NG stuff today.
(I picked the head model highlighted above)
I'll leave the head morphing alone for now,
Lets check out the hairstyles:
Wow, is that it for starter NG options? even after multiple years?
only 10 choices with 4 of them being pretty cast exclusive.
Sure we still have legacy hair to consider, but the quality is lower:
(It's more noticeable on some compared to others)
So I'll stick with the one of the left.
Next up is neck options:
I selected black hair with purple highlight, no idea why it's pure black
Anyways, I tried adjusting the 'neck area' to make her neck less slanted to the left. But all this really did was resize her head.
The Neck angle slider, was surprising more of a posture modifier, as it clearly adjusts more than just the neck:
I ended up going with about 75% up for a more 'confident' and less 'edgy' look.
Next up is eyes:
Again a fairly disappointing turn out for NG options, and since we're sticking with a NG face we're locked out of the classics.
I think this far right one is okay, and I went with the darker shade of green shown above.
Next up is eye detail:
I actually tried using the morph this time and had a little trouble with it, you can't simply move each point inidually to get your desired look,
each point directly effects it's parallel point, so you can't simply scale or reshape one side.
I like the eyelid position option, as you can adjust them from fully open to fully closed, but until we finish up the eye details, I'm not sure what I want to do with these, so I'll come back to it.
Next up is eyebrows:
This selection is also a little spare, but they have the basics,
I went with a simple lined selection, after increasing the thickness, I found something I was fairly happy with, you can adjust the spacing, but sadly no angling or other adjustment options.
And I think I'm actually disappointed with the selection here,
sure most of the 'classic' options are just recolors, so I'm glad we can color directly now, but I really find it lacking in variation for styles,
Also, a 'fullness' option as well as rotations sizing or even transparency would have been nice.
I Went and retouched my eye details and I think I found a better fit:
We have those weird 2D sliders again, we have options for the length and width, I'm leaving these alone for now, as I'm pretty happy with the stock look.
Next up is mouth:
I wish I knew what I did, but after messing around long enough with moth position and shaping, I got a happy with:
(Turns out this is controlled by 'vertical position' rather than shape)
(and then the server disconnected, so I had to start over from scratch, sorry there will be some variance in my design going forward)
Basically it's just 'do you want fangs?"
They're pretty cute imo, so why not!
The 'tongue settings' are only for if you want your character to have their tongue permanently sticking out.
You can adjust how much it sticks out, and and at what angle.
(not for me)
Next up is ears:
...and again we have these 2d-sliders:
I find them especially frustrating here, as we're deciding the length and depth of the ears, We're adjusting two different 3D options on a 2d Plane.
You can also select your preference ears and horns, even if you've not been designing for that race thus far:
So you really can just mix and match racial elements, very cool!
Next up makeup:
and wow, this has got to be the most disappointing thus far!
When using a NG face, you're pretty much limited to either 'Snipt' extremely light makeup, or 'cordal' that I showed here.
The third option is just clear lip gloss? We can't even use colors?
Sure the PSo2 classic designs were a little 'dramatic'.
But this is really unacceptable, at least give us basic colors for gloss.
Next up we're given the option to customize each of our character expressions:
Now this is actually really neat, you can adjust so many points here, from iris size, and eyebrows, to custom mouth shapes and so much more!
I really wish more games offered this, as I'll often times design a neutral face with a slight smile, then when I see them smile in game it grows to wide, and they look like a maniac! XD
Next up is body, here is where we find 'Body type selection'
Where we can be a humanoid or cast, and we can select between a more feminine or masculine body style for humanoid or cast.
I don't know about PSO2 NG, but the classic version had a fair amount of gender locked items. (iirc)
But on to body editing, they have the multi point morph tool we've seen in other games:
unfoutently the labels they offer kinda feel vague, but messing around with this a bit can give you a pretty good starting point, meaning less adjustments will be required later.
The first option allows you to adjust the body and bust proportions.
Again in only two dimensions:
I again found these sliders hard to use, even small changes seem to change too much, and it's kinda odd being only angle to scale a body by stretching it horizontal and vertical, without being able to adjust the depth at the same time.
I'll leave this alone for now, it seems a bit too volatile.
Next up are arms:
Finally, normal sliders are back, I'm just much more comfortable with them! We can easily adjust the shoulders and forearms,
However, for some reason, the upper part of the arms is only controllable via 2-d slider.
So I carefully adjusted it as shown, adding a little muscle, to the upper and lower parts of the arm, and I reduce the hand size a little, to make everything look uniform.
Next up is Waist:
Waist controls quite a bit it's not a simple 'butt slider'
I'm aiming to go for a slightly athletic build, rather than a pinup model, but I can't really find the arguments I'd like for things like muscle mass, leg spacing, etc.
Last up is skin tone, and outfit:
You only have one body type, based on your previous selections,
But you have a full RGB slider for colors for both skin, and what I'd assume is an undertone.
From there you can pick from a few starter outfits, (with 2 color channels)
there are far more in the 'classic PSO2 style' but again that will revert you to a classic body as well.
So here's the final look with/without cell shading:
I kinda think both look good in there own way!
And we can turn on/off cell shading at any time.
Afterward, you just name your character and select a class, and you're all set!
(You can make additional changes for up to 3 days, but after that you need to pay to make edits)
Alright so final thoughts!
Som, this is VERY CLEARLY a f2p game, a lot of the early cosmetic options were pretty spare, but I think the makeup and lipstick options were kinda unforgivable.
I wish they found a better way for us to make adjustment, as I found the 2d sliders much harder to use than in other games.
But I really enjoyed the creation process overall, and the stand-out feature was the expression editor.
Anyways, if you want to see a clip of the opening you can do so below,
I'll see you all next time!
