in my shonen training arc right now!!! no eyedropper + one brush + normal layers digital painting study (+ attempt at stylizing the face)

i feel my current style is still lacking and not impactful enough for emotional scenes---i want to make everything more ~cinematic~ and do more emotional scenes!! & to do that i realized i need to study more realistic lighting & drawing background 💀

How do you achieve that vintage look in your art pieces? I desperately want to try my hand at doing fake "screenshots" with that charming old anime look but I don't know how to get my pieces to look like that! 😭

Sorry for the super late reply.... I use a CSP auto action called "Retro Effects" or "Retro Filters"!

If you're using other painting softwares, I think it can still be achieved with the combo of 50% Gaussian Blur-filtered layer,

And then applying some Unsharp Mask for the VHS look

Applying Chromatic Abberation (optional)

And finish it off with a Noise layer for the grainy effect!

Besides these, I think the colors in your original artwork are super important too, the authentic old anime look usually use desaturated colors, so I try to follow that lol (even though in the end I often use bright colors instead just bc I prefer them,,, so my art doesn't totally look like old anime hahah) You can try color picking from old anime frames!
