Robin Character Content Master List
I have consumed an ungodly amount of batman and robin content in the past nineteen years of my life. So, here's a masterlist of said (media) content and the characters that I feel they do justice. (I will be adding to this over time. But feel free to add stuff in reblogs/comments/messages.)
Dick Grayson (Robin/Nightwing)
The 90s Batman: The Animated Series does a great job at exploring Dick's origin and his relationship with Bruce growing up. The show also does a lot for him in terms of showcasing his skills as Robin.
The 2010 Young Justice series is an honorable addition to say the least. The show focuses on the Young Justice League featuring Aqua-Lad, Robin, Kid Flash, Superboy (Kon el), Ms. Martian, and Artemis. (And more in later seasons.) And later showcases his leadership skills as Nightwing.
The 2003 Teen Titans series is definitely the better series at showcasing Dick's leadership skills and how he works with his team. (That Teen Titans Go bullshit can burn in hell where it belongs.)
The 2018 TV series Titans* is a darker take on Grayson's story with the titans. Though inaccurate to the comics or any other version of the bat family, the show does delve into Dick Grayson's dark side.
The movie Batman: Bad Blood has to be one of the best ways to see Dick's skills under the Batman cowel. When a mission goes wrong, he has to work with many members of the bat family to find a presumed dead Bruce.
Jason Todd (Robin/Red Hood)
The 2018 series Titans* has archs that showcase many members of the bat family and their relationship with Dick and the other titans.
The Batman: Under The Red Hood movie IS Jason's movie. It is about Jason's return to Gotham as Red Hood after coming back from the dead. (Alot of bat family content in this one!)
Although not cannon, the recently returned web cominc Batman: Wayne Family Adventures does a wonderful job at delving into Jason's PTSD and family dynamics.
Tim Drake (Robin/Red Robin)
The 2018 series Titans*, though inaccurate to everything else, has archs that showcase a darker take on many members of the bat family and their relationship with Dick and the other titans. Tim is one of those relationships starting in season 3.
The '97 series The New Batman Adventures showcases Tim as Robin and his journey to becoming Red Robin.
The 2010 Young Justice series showcases Tim in his Young Justice era starting in season 2.
Damian Al ghul Wayne (Robin)
The Batman: Son of Batman is Damian's origin story and the start of his training under the title of Robin.
The 3D animated Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons takes place when Damian first came to live with Bruce. The movie depicts damians relationship with Jon (Superman's son.)
The movie Batman VS Robin does a great job of showcasing Damian's character and showing that he is more than just the title of Robin.
Batman: Bad Blood is a great movie if you want to witness the epitome of Damian's realtionship with Dick as the Dynamic Duo.
Although not cannon, the web cominc Batman: Wayne Family Adventures is THE comic for wholesome content of Damian and the family dynamics of the Batfam.
*The Titan series have many trigger warnings that I recommend looking up before watching the show.
(Side tangent: I cannot find any connonical Stephanie Brown content outside of the comics that is available anywhere. I vaguely remember a movie with her. But, I'm starting to doubt that it ever existed because I cannot find it anywhere! And honestly I find that incredibly rude that this sassy blonde doesn't have ANYTHING!)
Wally West and Bart Allen in The Flash (1987) #189
On the topic of Superfam Week, pspspsp, look what I have. You wanna read about these guys sooo badly. (Spreadsheets under the cut.)
tt rejecting elements of dg's character that had been fairly consistent for decades and this just largely not being criticized by fandom despite being pretty obviously insanely classist makes me crazy
so often people justify his writing choices as "well he was trying to FIX dick after the ric grayson arc! he was trying to give him the life he DESERVED!" this is a fictional character, not a real person. he does not deserve any particular kind of life because he is not actually alive and living on planet earth with us; decisions around his class and income are a writer's decision about a character, informed by who that writer is, including by their biases around class, money, and education.
and the decision to make a guy who had been regularly written as a working class adult, who had been unhoused multiple times across continuities, and who didn't graduate college into a billionaire with a law degree is literally nuts!! what are you talking about!!! how does any of that "fix" him? it certainly doesn't return him to the pre-ric character; it turns him into a DIFFERENT CHARACTER!!
dick grayson is DICK GRAYSON. he doesn't need to have the same degree as his genius girlfriend! he doesn't need to have the same socioeconomic status as his billionaire best friend/brother/dad! this is not a character who is chronically insecure about working for a living or about not being degreed! if he wanted money he could ask for it (and he doesn't want to; this is a recurring long term thing with him where he sees offers of money as efforts to control him, rejects them, and finds other ways to fund his life and his nightwing operations) and if he wanted to go back to college he easily could (and doesn't). when dick feels like he's not good enough for babs or bruce it's not because they have more degrees or bigger bank accounts than him!! what a complete fucking failure to understand the character, holy shit dude!!!!
it's a crime that anyone is still repeating the misogynistic "tarantula is devin grayson's mary sue self-insert" lie in 2025 when tom taylor turned dick grayson into a billionaire barbie boy fantasy and receives comparatively delicate criticism in comparison (which he can't deal with maturely at all from what i've seen). sorry i saw this one panel out of context and i got so mad i turned into a cartoon character with steam spewing from their head. i am so so angry about gfm's treatment and how it's part of this long history of queer women writers at dc being catastrophically punished for putting a toe out of line while this mediocre white straight man won AWARDS off the back of one of those women's MALIGNED WORK while writing LIKE SHIT
Hello! I was just wondering if you had knew the proper order to read Dick as Bats but with Damian as his robin? Thanks!
Sure! I couldnβt tell if you were asking for all the comics that have Dick as Batman or comics specifically where Dick and Damian are both present, so I just did a list for both. The ones in bold have both Dick and Damian present. This list is in my best attempt at an in-universe chronological order...it was hard but I tried (cries). Here we go:Β
BATMAN DICK GRAYSON COMIC LIST
Nightwing (1996) #138: Dick and Damian first meet. This is part two of seven in βThe Resurrection of Raβs al Ghulβ arc. You can read the whole thing for context, but this one is the only one with significant interaction between Dick and Damian.Β
Nightwing (1996) #152-153: Dick tries to reconcile with the fact that Bruce is gone, and that he will have to continue his legacy. These comics have Dick going head to head with Raβs al Ghul, and also show him moving back to Gotham.Β
Battle for the Cowl #1-3: Gotham City is in trouble, and Dick is forced to take on the mantle of Batman.Β
Batman (1940) #687-688: A lot of this is about Dick learning to be Batman, but you also see a lot of him talking about how he is planning to approach Damian. You also see some of the beginning of Dick training Damian as well. Technically an epilogue to Battle for the Cowl.
Batman (1940) #689-692: Dick continues to adjust to his role as Batman. Two-Face manages to sneak into the Batcave, and tests Dickβs conviction.Β
Batman and Robin (2009) #1-3: Dick and Damianβs first time working together as Batman and Robin.Β
Batman (1940) #693-696: While Batman takes to the streets, Damian is mostly delegated to training, in order to improve his detective work. Unfortunately, Damian doesnβt take the work seriously, leaving Dick vulnerable to Black Maskβs and Penguinβs plotsβ¦
Batman (1940) #697-699: Batman finishes dealing with Black Mask, and goes on to face the Riddler.Β
Batman: Streets of Gotham #1-16: A collection of stories showing how Robin and Batman are adjusting to their new roles; the duo doesnβt have a lot of trust yet. Interestingly, these comics show more of how Hush was handled. They are also where Damianβs friend Colin is introduced for the first time.Β
Batman and Robin (2009) #4-6: Batman and Robin versus a (somewhat out of character) Red Hood.Β
Batman and Robin (2009) #7-9: Dick tries to resurrect Batman. Warning: this arc is extremely out of character for Dick and I hate everything about it. But this isnβt a comic rec list so Iβll include it, ugh. Hereβs where youβd read this monstrosity. If you want to skip it, hereβs all youβd need to know: 1) Damian went to his mother to heal his spine after Red Hood shot him, and 2) Dick and Damian now have reason to believe Bruce is alive. Bam, now you donβt even have to read it.Β
Batman and Robin (2009) #10-12: Damian and Dick uncover clues that reveal that Bruce is alive. Meanwhile, Talia attempts to kill Dick...using her own son to do it.Β
Batman (1940) #700: A special event that has sections where Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, and a future Damian Wayne are Batman. A weird comic overall, but the parts with Damian and Dick are really pretty good.Β
Batman (1940) #703: Dick and Damian have developed a solid partnership, though Damian is continuing to learn more about being Robin and about his father. The comic acts as a prelude to Bruce Wayne: The Road Home.Β
Bruce Wayne: The Road Home:Β Bruce evaluates how things have been going in his absence, and gives his thoughts on the new dynamic duo.Β
Batman and Robin (2009) #13-16: Dick and Damian struggle to deal with Professor Pyg, Joker, and Dr. Hurt. Bruce returns!Β
Batman (1940) #704-712: Batman leaves Gotham to Dick while he puts Batman Incorporated into place. Damian, Tim, Azrael, and Selina all make appearances in this stretch of comics.Β
Batman and Robin (2009) #17-22: Dick and Damian work together as Batman and Robin to stop Una Nemo, and then White Knight in the following arc.Β
Batman and Robin (2009) #23-25: Dick and Damian team up with Jason to save his former sidekick, Scarlet. (Jasonβs still acting a bit more extreme than youβd typically expect.)Β
Batman: Black Mirror: This is a collection of Detective Comics #871-881. Iβd say these are my favorite Dick!Batman stories ever. All the cases are very good (really chilling), and the characterizations are top notch stuff. Lots of Gordon, Barbara, and some Tim also.Β
Batman (1940) #713: Damian tells the story of Batman and Robin. Very heartwarming.Β
Batman: Gates of Gotham #1-5: A good story, itβs interesting to see how Dick interacts with his siblings (ie Cass, Tim, and Damian) as Batman.Β
Thereβs definitely a bit of hopping back and forth required if youβre going to read it this way lmao. Also, here are some more comics with Dick as Batman that I was too lazy to try to put into the timeline here:Β
Superman/Batman #76: Supermanβs reaction to Dick taking up the Batman mantle following Bruceβs death. Happens towards the beginning of Dickβs time as Batman.Β
Blackest Night: Batman #1-3: Dick, Tim, and Damian deal with an army of Black Lanterns, composed of once-dead friends and enemies. Bruceβs body is stolen, and Dick and Tim have to face their parentsβ reanimated corpses.Β
Red Robin (2009): Mostly focused on Tim Drake. Dick and Damian appear in minor cameos throughout as well though. Itβs interesting to look at Dick and Damian as they are in issue #1, with Damian being really rude and not listening to Dick at all, and then jumping to issue #12 and seeing just how much Damian now follows Dickβs lead and has changed while Tim was away. Idk, itβs just kind of cool. Issues #13-14 also have Tim working with the new dynamic duo as well.Β
Batgirl (2009): This one is mostly focused on Stephanie Brown taking up the Batgirl mantle in the wake of Bruceβs death. Dick and Damian first meet Stephanie in issue #5...and they get off to a very rough start with her lmao. The team features heavily in #6-7 also.Β
Titans (2008): This series starts off with Dick as Nightwing, but then he leaves the team to become Batman at the end of #10. He appears as Batman in: #15 with Garth, #21 with Starfire (really thought this one was interesting), #23 with Wally and Donna, and #28-30 with Slade.Β
Justice League of America (2006) #41-60: Dickβs time on the Justice League with Donna. Likely takes place towards the middle and end of Dickβs time as Batman.Β
Hope this is helpful to you!Β
Thank youuu!!
