Well, here we are. Here I am. Here you are. How did we get here? I sure would like to know. Boredom and internet wormholes aside I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that this is indeed the very first post on Cinema Rolls dot biz.
However you meandered upon this sly fox of a site you probably would like to know what the hell it is we do here. I don’t know that I have the perfect answer for you right this very second, but I do have some vague notion of what we hope to accomplish.
This website is all about film. We will offer the standard menagerie of reviews, features, trailers, poster art, interviews, award season coverage and if we’re lucky, we’ll have a pizza party at the end! In entertaining ourselves we will probably amuse you at least some of the time. I would imagine our style to be a little cheeky and irreverent, but underneath, always genuinely interested and well-informed.
You see, all of us contributing here at Cinema Rolls are film geeks to some extent or another. Personally, I fancy myself to possess an overall knowledge of the film world on a level at which I believe most people would consider to be above-average. I’m no Roger Ebert. Maybe Dale Ebert, his drunken neighbor. Why does Dale have the same last name as Roger? How could he afford a house in that neighborhood!? I have no idea. Forget about that.
I would say the majority of my strengths lie in films released over the last thirty or so years and that era will most likely make up the vast majority of our coverage. Although, I do like the idea of using this opportunity to dig a little deeper and gain a greater understanding of classic film.
To give you an idea, some of my favorite directors include Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, John Hughes, David O. Russell, P.T. Anderson, and the Coen Bros. – to name but a few. Some of my favorite films include Arthur, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, No Country For Old Men, and of course, Christmas Vacation.
I skew towards the cult classics and the funny, but I absolutely do love a well-conceived drama. I like documentaries and coming-of-age stories and I think classic horror is far superior to contemporary horror.
But, enough about me; let’s talk about we. I know I have used that word ‘we’ a lot in this opening soliloquy but honestly it’s just me to begin. No, no, don’t go! I do have friends who I have reached out to that are interested in contributing and that’s who I imagine to make up the collective ‘we’ over time. These are all keen - kind of funny, kind of funny-looking - film lovers, just like me, and we will introduce them shortly. So, stay tuned.
Maybe bookmark the page and stumble over again sometime? We judge films, but we’ll never judge you, fine friend. Hope to see you again. However it is you got here. Don’t be a stranger!
