Almost 7 week old update on the Beepies <3

I’ve been sadly dreading coordinating the date of their neuters and when they’d be heading back to the shelter to be put up for adoption but I did so with my manager.

AND THEN SHE’s like oh hey because we have so many fosters aging out that week would you mind being pushed out another week? AND IM LIKE OH IM 100% DOWN TO KEEP MY BABIES AN EXTRA WEEK AND A HALF.

So onto the actual update :D

We now have full reign of the living when I’m home and they LOVE to rip around while doing it. They’re also really starting to work off their baby fat and really become my cutest babies <3 

Video for y’all this week because they refuse to stay still for me. Pls ignore my dirty floor, I cleaned it right after this but it’s incredibly hot I ain’t cleaning more than once a day right now XD

the pain of seeing nona be raised by cam, pal, and pyrrha in a gentle, loving way and then having it contrasted by kiriona- who glibly says that her dad made her skin impenetrable and left speed holes in her body. the whiplash of spending a good portion of the book wondering if nona could maybe be gideon and/or harrow if given a proper warm upbringing, to then be faced with kiriona at her lowest, most bitter and (in her eyes) unloved self!!!!

Something I do find lovely about the first 4 Murderbot Diaries books (can’t yet speak on all of them) is:

Murderbot chronically finding new scientists/travellers to claim as “clients” (whether paid or not) like one of those sheepless herding dogs that goes around finding sheep (or anything else they can herd like a flock of sheep). Like it clearly has a protect humans instinct and a desperate need for enrichment.

Given its general lack of self awareness and unreliable narrator status, there’s no way in hell Murderbot is aware it’s doing this.

- a pair of military officers who try to be bullies and fail spectacularly because Camilla is just too awesome

- twins who probably aren't fucking each other but you can't say for sure. and also Babs is there too i guess but who even cares about Babs

- two actual children

- a charming diplomat and a kickass historian who get murdered for being too good at history

- a brilliant necromancer and scholar and a badass swordswoman who love each other more than life itself

- a myriad-old super necromancer who's coaplaying as said scholar's former situationship and her walking corpse

- a guy whose main character trait is "hates the protagonists because basically racism" whose magic speciality is soul siphoning and his nephew who was expressly born and trained to have his soul repeatedly stolen

- a three apples tall, stick-thin war crime who definitely has only the most platonic of feelings for her cavalier and a masc lesbian who just learned that girls can be nice to her and also has only the most platonic of feelings for her necromancer

- and more!

A small thing: I don't think Judith and Marta were doing the smart thing by calling for help.

Was it reasonable for them to know it wasn't the smart thing? No. They had every reason to believe the Emperor's help was exactly what they needed.

Probably only Ianthe could have told them why they shouldn't make that call. Palamedes sort of knew, but he didn't want to believe it.

Every theorem they're uncovering at Canaan House is forbidden knowledge. The necromancers are learning scary powerful tricks that they've been explicitly taught are impossible. Tricks the Lyctors have known for thousands of years, and that somehow the rest of their civilization has been prevented from knowing.

The communications blackout is not to help them focus, or to prevent them from getting outside help. It's to prevent leaks.

Even before Cytherea happened, none of them were leaving that planet alive.

John said he didn't want anyone to "lose their lives unwillingly at Canaan House". And in his own way I think he meant that; that distinction is important to him.

But what would have happened if the Second hadn't killed Teacher, and Ianthe ascended? If Cyth hadn't been there? At what point would it have become clear to the scions that the only way out 'alive' was as a lich? Maybe that's unfair. John tells us himself that he's not a monster, and promised to return those who didn't ascend "home in full honour, with trump and timbrel." And he does, after all, "know where remembrance lives in the brain".

A cavalier who makes a joyful intellectual decision to help their necromancer ascend for the glory of the empire and a cavalier who decides to die to protect their necromancer from disgrace or death (regardless of how much their necromancer might prefer that...) still gets John the Lyctors he wants. And everyone who dies 'agreed' to it (except for Babs, but who cares about Babs).

But can you imagine being the necromancer that learned all this, said "No" and then had to go back and rule a planet in this society as if all of this had never happened and they had just been returned home with honor? What would that do to your psyche?

"Harrow is a goth" "Harrow is a prep" "Harrow dresses alt" "Harrow would dress to fit in"

Harrow is the broke homeschooled kid from an isolationist cult that was let out on mission and/or bargained her way into attending a university so she could bring knowledge and funding back to the community. All her clothes are second-, third- or fourth-hand and have been patched and mended to hell and back and are not visually distinctive enough to identifiably belong to any subculture. The only exception to this lack of visual distinctiveness are her Church Robes, which are Church Robes. The only new clothing she owns is, like, underwear, maybe.

She is covered from neck to wrist and ankle because if anyone saw she had a human body under there she would gouge their eyes out. Most of her clothes are home-dyed black because she did it in the bathtub, and they must be black to show she is in permanent mourning. Also because then it's less likely people will notice she wears the same shirt and skirt for three days straight.

She does still have piercings (she is the only one on the Ninth mentioned to have piercings, I do not believe those are sacramental and are fully a Harrow Thing) because she can argue it's holy mortification of the flesh. Otherwise, thinking about what she is wearing is a distraction from more important things, which are a) being Righteous and b) proving she is the smartest person in the room.
