if i could get all my black americans attention really quick? now i was originally gonna mind my business but i called this shit before it even happened and i’m seeing a new uproar in xenophobia within the afro-diaspora. monaleo unknowingly opened up a can of worms with her new song ”sexy soulaan” and though her intentions were pure and i’m sure she doesn’t know this shit is way deeper than just a word, it unfortunately has made room for a certain group of black americans to fester and feed their delusions about multiple inherently anti-black ideologies etc…

i wanna start off by saying that my anger comes from the love i have for my community. i am a proud black american geechee woman, and i’m a pan-africanist. i am for ALL black people, always have been, always will be, and i am very understanding and sympathetic to fellow african americans who felt like they never had any culture or didn’t come from anywhere. nobody told yall that the things you do day to day is culture, your holidays are culture, your food is culture, your dance is culture, no matter how popular outside of your culture and all over the world it may seem. it is still yours.

i fear we have all had that phase, but some of yall lived way too long in it and i must blame the parents and the grandparents and the lack of our history being taught outside of school because from the looks of it, so many of yall are STILL lost even with this new found identity yall have taken on to separate yourself, and it’s going all wrong.

now that we have gotten that out of the way,

SOULAAN IS NOT A REAL TERM AND USING IT PUSHES FOR TRIBALISM, EXOTICISM, SEPARATION, ERASURE OF BLACK HISTORY AND A RIFF WITHIN THE BLACK AMERICAN DIASPORA AND ANOTHER IN THE AFRICAN-DIASPORA. (as if we can afford that)

it’s not even the fact that the term is fake and made up three/four years ago, or that it was made up by a xenophobic, homophobic weirdo that pisses me off, it’s the fact that people are lying about the history of it. our ancestors were not calling themselves soulaan or soulaani, that word was made up in the comments of a TIKTOK, something i watched happened with my own eyes, but it’s not a shocker to me yall are so quick to want to divide yourself from a name you resent so badly because yall don’t wanna be “african” (….*major eye roll*) or associated with a group of people that you feel you have been othered by, are different from or you have some sort of ass backwards beef with (and i don’t even have enough time to cover all of that on BOTH sides cause all of it is stupid as fuck) as if you don’t already have the big ass nose, hair texture, and brown skin..like okay.

(and no im not mentioning the native american part of this because that’s too long of a history lesson and too much of a back and forth with pretendians and AA who actually do have native american ancestry)

my other problem is yall are not seeing the divide this is causing already and it’s happening FAST. this soulaan term is becoming the new “FBA”…every time you turn around they are correcting someone for saying african american “ITS SOULAAN!! WE ARE NOT AFRICAN!!!! IVE NEVER BEEN TO AFRICA!!!!” and it’s starting to give FBAs saying “YOU ARE NOT AMERICAN!! YOU ARE AN AFRICAN!! PRETENDER!! YOU ARE A TETHER!!!” to actual black americans when they look “too african”….???

it’s one thing to not wanna be called african american and prefer black american (which is playing the same tune mind you but..) like okay whatever but it’s another thing to completely sever your ties with where you come from, indirectly yet also directly insulting your own ancestors because of superficial ass problems that could be eradicated if yall knew how to think critically and opened a book.

another thing i find problems with is this made up ass lie yall pulled out of yall asses as to why you prefer to be called soulaan…lying through your teeth about not knowing what and who the fuck the term “african american” pertains to as if yall have not been using the term for your entire fucking life in america. YOU KNOW that is a term for black people who are the product of the trans atlantic slave trade who ended up in america…that is something we all know…not once have african IMMIGRANTS ever been recognized (historically) as african americans and even if they were YALL KNOW THAT IS NOT THE CORRECT TERM. yall be the only mfs pretending to be confused cause you, again, don’t wanna be referred to as “african”.

we know that second gen immigrants who live over here are nigerian-american, cameroonian-american, ghanaian-american so on and so forth—THESE ARE KNOWN TERMS FOR THEM. and if anyone from anywhere in the diaspora ever got confused, that’s simply a sign of them not knowing history, period.

then on the other side you have people only using this new term because they hate being black american, full stop. they hate feeling like they come from nothing as if the culture isn’t all around them with history to back it up, so they make up something. (which is literally why “soulaan” was made up in the first place) yall feel like being black americans isn’t enough, yall wanna seem “foreign” and “exotic” like yall deem everybody else which btw feeds into colorism and race insecurity already, along with the tribalism and exoticism i mentioned before because not everybody is on this same wave (thank god).

but the truth is? being black american is enough. being african american is enough. YOUR BLACKNESS IS ENOUGH, YOUR ANCESTORS MADE SURE OF IT BY BUILDING THIS FUCKING COUNTRY. you wanna call yourself something different? retrace your family history and learn about the other ethnic groups that fall under black american, there are MORE than 5 that makes up all of us. you don’t know your family history? start practicing african american culture in general, like i said, you do not have to have a some different label that nobody has ever heard of to be different, exotic, or foreign.

you go to a different country, guess what? you are now foreign. you are exotic. it’s not that hard to be either of those things.

craziest part about this is that yall be knowing yall family, yall grandmas, aunts, cousins and don’t ask them shit about where you and eb else comes from, yall don’t write down names or nothing. not all, but A LOT of yall. you won’t go to the source to find out who you are but you will give yourself a made up name without even thinking deeply about how this will affect you.

the last thing i will say about this is how i can see this getting even worse. we already have diaspora wars in the african-diaspora, now we are having wars within our own sub communities (hint, hint, TRIBALISM) because of a made up ass term. its redundant. it’s so bad we are getting into extreme anti-black territories, xenophobia (against other african americans mind you, as if we don’t already have toxic regionalism) and then we get down to the “are you really even black????” conversation and yall barely even understand critical race theory these days to be having even that talk with people…and to think yall still having the conversation on if yall wanna be called “african american” or “black american, which is also a stupid ass conversation…

Every ethnonym starts somewhere: Black American, African American, Afro-Caribbean, Jamaican, Afro-Latino. If Soulaan is new, that doesn’t make it illegitimate.

Names don’t cause tribalism. Black Americans have always had subgroups: Geechee/Gullah, Creole, Maroon, Freedmen, and Black Seminole. I haven’t seen any of those subcultures of black people in America destroy our unity.

Every identity term was “made up” at some point: African American was made up, negro was made up, black was made up, latino was made up. Telling them they need to find their "real" subethnicity is exactly what they’re doing, naming themselves based on lineage. You don’t have to like the term, but dismissing everyone who uses it as “lost” or “self-hating” is just dumb.

1. i do my research, this is quite literally what i do in my free time and for school, nothing i have said was me pulling shit out of my ass. this is from observation, experience, and research.

2. yes, all terms are “made up” but none of these ethic groups were built on the premise to separate from being african american, whereas “soulaan” and “fba” main original goal was to do exactly that for many reasons. no, names do not create tribalism, but how you act WITHIN the identity does and the exhibits are all around us when you look at the behavior of the majority of people who identify as anything but african american and other original ethnicities that fall under that.

as a creole woman myself, i see what is happening within my community and its not hard to tell that the separation these new names are causing is from a want to be deemed “exotic” because just being african american is not enough for some people. so they begin to exotify these groups of people who have always been proud of being african american and lie about the history and gatekeep things that simply cannot be gatekept. they create new identities as if we needed a new name and bash people who stick with real terms with real rich history (african american, black american) but end up praising geechee and some creole cultures as if it’s not still african american culture at its core…why? because it has a different name. something more “foreign” that nobody has heard of. THAT is self hate.

these made up, yes, made up terms have quickly turned into an “us vs them niggas” type of situation and that in itself IS the first stage of tribalism.

regardless of how you see it, it is tribalism at its core.

Ok I can understand that, but what it sounds like you’re saying is that all people who claim that do is only because it’s self hate and to distance themselves from Africans which is just not true. I can agree that people do do those those things but those people are the ones giving all soulaans a bad name. And yes, because it’s new people are going to be attracted to the word or the meaning because it is new to Americans because it came around in 2020, that is just a human instinct, curiosity to something they can embrace themselves in because they’re black in America who descended from chattel slavery.

“Real rich history” is exactly what they’re exerting, African Americans that descended from chattel slavery who have indigenous roots in North America. And I can see your pov from them trying to distinguish themselves from other black Americans but which I do understand their pov in that sense because almost all black Americans automatically believe that their ancestors were slaves when they were not and are immigrants (which there’s nothing wrong with). Their main goal wasn’t to divide themselves culturally but to target justice (reparations).
