like for realsies i was really hesitant to make fanart for an anime i just watched but i saw someone draw them for last years challenge and thought well, why not! i really do think we could be better and I want fandom as a whole to get better.

Hi here's one of my Melanin Beam Challenges! (thank you for the feedback I appreciate that so very much)

I chose Steven and Greg Universe! Specifically because more media needs Black boys who are portrayed as softer and loving and kind, and not at all judged for that! Plus, it would add greatly to the plot - finding out your mother was a colonizer who never really took responsibility for her actions, kept humans as "pets", and left the pieces for you to pick up, would have had much more impact on a Black kid than a white one. As for Greg, he's a good dad who end up a humble millionaire, and we need more of that in media too!

Ya know, I kind of appreciate the tan on Greg's arm remaining! Very rarely do people think to actually depict tan lines on us, least not on here that I've seen. You feel very much like @jay-rayart , who has said much the same about needing more representation of Black boys who get to be soft!

As for your take on Rose Quartz, tbh, I don't know if I agree! I feel like Steven being a white kid dealing with a colonizer mother really brings up a story that is "dealing with the actions of the past that defined your future at the sacrifice of others, even when you weren't the one who committed them." Really uh... Big one, I think, for white folks to pick up, like yesterday!

More of a side note, but I often wonder about the time Marina spent adapting to Inkopolis Square before Octo Expansion.

It must have been scary to not only live, but to be a popular figure in a space that doesn’t widely understand your identity & potentially be hostile towards it.

She was brave for many years, knowing that if this one thing slipped out, all of her biggest supporters (including Pearl) could abandon her or worse.
