Esau and Jacob by Matthias Stom Matthias Stom (c.1600 – after 1652) was born in the Utrecht area but spent most of his artistic life in Italy. Esau and Jacob was painted in the 1640s and is now in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia. Returning home one day, the exhausted Esau caught the scent of a lentil dish that his younger twin brother Jacob had prepared. Esau asked Jacob to give him some but Jacob said he would only if Esau relinquished his birthright to him. Without much consideration, he gave up these rights, which did not seem very crucial to him.

Bernardino Luini (1480?-1532) was influenced by Leonardo da Vinci and many of his paintings including Christ among the Doctors have been taken in the past to be originals by Leonardo. The National Gallery, London acquired the painting in the 1831 Howell Carr Bequest. In Jesus' youth, he went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem at Passover. When Mary and Joseph were searching for him on the return journey, they found him in the Temple, discussing matters with the scribes and astounding them with insightful questions. Christ was supposedly twelve years old but he seems more mature in Luini's pane

The Sacrifice of Isaac was painted by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1573-1610) in 1603 for Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, the future Pope Urban VIII. It is in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. In order to test Abraham, God ordered him to give his son Isaac as a burnt offering. Abraham followed these instructions but was stopped by an angel just before carrying the sacrifice. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669) painted Belshassar's Feast around 1636-8. It is now in the National Gallery, London. Belshazzar, King of Babylon, was hosting a banquet. Suddenly a hand appeared and wrote "Mene mene tekel u-parsin" on the wall. Daniel was summoned: he said "Mene" meant that God would end Belshazzar's rule; "Tekel" meant that God found him greedy; "Parsin" meant that his kingdom would be split up. Later that night, Belshazzar was killed and Persia took over Babylon.
