reblog this with the most embarassing thing about ur spotify wrapped in the tags
the world may seem sad and bleak right now so in the tags tell me one good thing that’s happened to you this year so far
If you're wondering why there's so much resistance to the idea of a 4-day work week, or why automation hasn't actually led to people working less like it was supposed to...
They complained about the 5-day week, and before that the 6-day week, and less than 12 hours in a work day. But I know how much wasted time there is in a workday...
the virgin loss.jpg versus the chad xkcd Seven Years
Don’t forget the latest version, Ten Years
@vividaway Randall Munroe is an internet cartoonist who runs the ‘xkcd’ online comic series, which has run from 2006 up to today, with new comics every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Xkcd isn’t an ongoing story, just a series of funny, wholesome, depressing, or oddly scientifically informative comics.
In 2010, Randall’s fiance was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. He didn’t share too many details at first, but things tended to bleed into his comics: sometimes funny, sometimes sad.
Often in this time, other cartoonists would write in guest comics for Randall, or he’d put in short filler pieces, to try and fill space while nonstop cancer treatments took up most of his time.
In 2012, he posted a comic called ‘Two Years’, about the time since the diagnosis. It’s the one that hasn’t yet been posted here (although parts of it are included in the other comics), and it commemorates some of the things that had happened in the two years since the diagnosis.
There are representations of Randall and his fiance being together for her treatment, worrying together, traveling the world, and getting married. It’s still depressing, but it’s a lot more hopeful, showing how they’ve still managed to have happy moments together, and things will still get better.
Themes of cancer continued in xkcd, but they increasingly became less about fear and nihilism, and more about hope, or just cool facts related to cancer.
At the top of this post is the comic posted in 2017: Seven Years. In it, Randall and his wife are traveling more, trying to have fun and continue old and new hobbies, with cancer ever-present in the background of it all. At the end, the two of them observe the 2017 solar eclipse, and despite all the uncertainty that comes with the thought of another seven years, agree to watch the 2024 eclipse together too.
There are just about no cancer comics between that one and the most recent comic, the one I posted: Ten Years, written in 2020. It’s by far the most hopeful of the three in the little series: the two of them are happy, they’re playing with rabbits and riding on handcarts and going out hiking and stargazing, together. At the end, Ten Years breaks the format with a conversation in which they talk about how unbelievable it is that it’s been so long, and share their worries as well as their hopes. It even ends on a much more lighthearted joke about immortality.
It’s a good comic. Definitely in my top two comics wherein internet cartoonists express emotions about an illness suffered by their wife.
“The ten-year cancerversary is traditionally the Cursed Artifact Granting Immortality anniversary.” -Randall Munroe.
And now, at long last, Fifteen Years:
This week, I read a fic that was around 20 years old, which had originally been posted on the author's personal website and which she added to AO3 a few years ago. She listed her email address with the fic, so after I finished reading, I sent her an email saying how much I enjoyed the story, how much I appreciated the work and effort she obviously put into it, and thanked her for uploading it to AO3. She responded the next day and thanked me for my message, then said she had a few more stories in the same series that she hadn't gotten around to uploading. I checked this morning--she added a 35,000 word novella and thanked me in the summary.

Stupid, chauvinist misogyny: Men are X, which is good, while Women are Y, which is bad
Woke, Feminist Take: Men are X, which is reactionary, while women are Y, which is enlightened
Maybe, just spitballing here, maybe we don't have to do the "Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars" stuff at all. Maybe men and women aren't all that different, maybe the differences between individuals are far more important, maybe we just talk about good or bad behaviors directly instead of having to force everything into war of the sexes shit.
Some of you learned the shadows on the wall are fake but are stuck insisting the puppets being used to cast them are real
Might have been done before but silly tag game. Who is prev's blorbo?
criteria for my proposed "the girlcaptain and her suicidal knight" dynamic:
the girlcaptain need not be explicitly a captain but she must be a) a woman and b) in some kind of position of leadership and command.
her model of leadership must be in some way compassionately counter-cultural. it might be a sci-fi/fantasy setting where misogyny and gender roles aren't really a thing so it doesn't have to be a resistance of patriarchal norms, but she has to be consciously pushing against some kind of cruel and oppressive standard of control.
the suicidal knight can be any gender, and they also don't have to be explicitly a knight, but they do have to be a second-in-command who acts on other people's behalf in a way that incurs significant risk.
the girlcaptain saves the suicidal knight from some kind of terrible fate like enforced servitude, captivity, certain death, immanent self-destruction, etc. the suicidal knight is somehow at the end of their tether and the girlcaptain helps them when she does not have to.
the girlcaptain does not ask for anything in return. I cannot stress this enough. she thinks saving the suicidal knight is the reward in and of itself, she wouldn't save them just to bind them to her again, she actively does not want to control them. so, out of a combination of genuine gratitude and an inability to fully leave behind the mindset of when they were captive/in service/fated for death, the suicidal knight makes up the shortfall and decides on their own that they are forever indebted to her. to the suicidal knight's eye, she graced them with a real chance at life, and so they owe that life to her. and they're extremely fucking weird about it.
for whatever reason, the girlcaptain is not available for the kind of emotional intimacy that the suicidal knight desires. maybe she's in love with someone else, maybe she has a bunch of her own inner turmoil to deal with, maybe she has ethical concerns about their power dynamic, maybe she's super busy with her position of leadership and has "attend to own needs and desires" penciled in for after all these massive crises are over, or maybe she's just not into them that way. whatever the case, she cares deeply for them, maybe even loves them, but not in the way the suicidal knight wants to be loved. the desired love doesn't have to be romantic or sexual, but it should be in some way maddening.
the fundamental thing about this dynamic is that there is a massive amount of reciprocated care, respect, and compassion, but their biggest needs from each other are, at least for the time being, incompatible. the girlcaptain wants an equal who lives for themself and the suicidal knight wants to be subsumed to prove their devotion and worth.
not every point has to be hit for a pair of characters to qualify as a girlcaptain and her suicidal knight, I'm modelling this list off a bunch of examples and just trying to find the average of what the fuck their problems are, but this is the basic outline.
@billiuspendragon since you asked:
as many people in the notes have said, rose quartz and pearl from steven universe are thee blueprint for this
gideon and harrow from the locked tomb, though they only slip into properly towards the very end of gtn post-pool scene
paige and hayward from the silt verses. iykyk.
jet siquliak and buddy aurinko from the penumbra podcast. they are less unhinged and jet isn't particularly weird about buddy but they have a lot of this vibe going on.
