Holding thoughts and prayers for people of Ukraine 🇺🇦 I had a most memorable visit to Kyiv a few years ago. I came across some of the kindest and most hospitable people in my travels. I think back about the wonderful yoga community I got to spend time with there. During this time of crisis and growing conflict for the people of Ukraine I hope the civilians and families there can find refugee where they need it the most. We don’t need more death and destruction in this world. I’m sure the neighboring countries in Europe are also feeling a cry for peace. A throwback in tribute to national DJ day. Some of my best memories from the past decade were behind the 1’s and 2’s. From all the different time slots on the radio to the wide variety of gigs at house parties in SF to the East Bay, Berkeley co-ops, a residency at Berkeley Art Museum, some Burning Man events, local art and fashion galleries, silent disco, yoga classes, birthdays, weddings, corporate events, expos, fundraisers, and night clubs. It makes me nostalgic just thinking about it all! Even though I’m currently a DJ in exile I’m still a collector. There is no way for this phase to be early retirement as a sound selector. 💁‍♂️ Did you know I used to make music? Probably not since most of you didn’t know me 20 years ago 😄 I created this tune in 2001! When my family first moved to California. And now, two decades later, I finally got around to share it to stream online. 📲⁣ ⁣ ⏺ Recorded on tape using a Tascam 4-track. Jamming out on a Yamaha electric guitar with some effect pedals, Fender fretless bass, and beats on a Roland drum machine. ⁣ ⁣ ▶️ Back then I was listening to and inspired by a lot of Autechre, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Funkstörung and other fun IDM artist. ⁣ ⁣ 🔀 My first original track now playing on Spotify, iTunes, Youtube and other streaming services. Enjoy! ⁣ ⁣ 💌 The track title was a tribute to dear friend Anne Marshall Moore, who left us in summer of 2009.⁣ ⁣ 📸 I think the photo was taken in Paris on some train in the spring of 2001, when I went to visit Anne where she was studying abroad. ⁣ ⁣ 📿 I edited onto the photo some mala beads which I had gotten in Kathmandu, Nepal the summer Anne passed away. And somehow had the mindset that props were a sign of weakness or inability in the practice. Looking back it might have been because I was introduced to yoga with power vinyasa.⁣ ⁣ While I no longer practice Iyengar yoga, I remember the first day I attended a class. I thought it would be easiest thing to just lie on props and use them in all poses. I still remember I finished that class, and crashed at 8pm because I had worked every-single-part of me without even realizing. ⁣ ⁣ It was only later as I explored more ways of practicing asana that I discovered the wealth of knowledge that props can provide to the student & the teacher. My guest today, is somewhat an expert when it comes to playing with props. ⁣ ⁣ Zain Syed is a POC yoga teacher who gives the purpose of props a new definition.
