"A Shirt Made of Fire", Vardges Petrosyan (translated by metamorphesque)
Lost and Found
I've been really nostalgic for Steven Universe lately, and I have so much love and appreciation for the show I grew up with, so I thought I should make something nice to sort of give back, y'know? Anyways, I hope you enjoy. <3

:
Garnet has a cigarette between her fingers. Pearl's nose wrinkles, but she doesn't say anything; only shakes her head, leaning back on the dirt-brick walls. Grit digs into the ridges of her shoulders. There's graffiti — of course there's graffiti — scrawled behind Garnet. Almost illegible. DREAM BLUE, one reads. FUCK LIFE!
She would've thought it childish, once.
The cold cuts through the night: in the small opening towering above, soft plumes of smoke curl up to meet the solid silver of the moon. It's stark tonight, the light. Enough that Pearl can make out the softness of her knuckles when she looks back at her.
"Care to share?" she asks.
(She sighs, first. But that's inconsequential.)
Garnet raises an eyebrow.
"You sure about that?"
Her voice is dense. She speaks slowly, like they have all the time in the world. They don't, really. But it's almost like they do, and it's different from the battle-ragged silence Pearl is used to hear heaving through the comms, the sharp orders ringing through them on most days. It does things to her, like making her stare at Garnet. Like making her ask for a drag when she quit years ago, back when Steven was born.
Stupid things.
"I can handle it," she snaps, warmth rising to her face. Wind rustles the thin film of paper ads rolling around the street, but it's — she's warm. Hot, even. The type of heat that doesn't belong here, not on these streets, especially not on days like this — this isn't something she's supposed to keep, she knows, she's not supposed to have this —
"I didn't say that."
Wanting is a different matter altogether. Pearl prides herself on her rationality, which is why she chooses not to think about the way Garnet's voice rocks through her like a storm.
She huffs instead. It's easier, not thinking about it.
"Your eyes did."
She's better than this. Better at this.
Usually.
Garnet holds it out, lips pressed. Pearl still notices the way her lips twitch into a near smile. She takes it with less bravado than she'd initially planned. And — there, she has it now. It's there, right between her fingers.
Right between her fingers.
It's been a while. She can't — when was the last time they had the time? After Steven was born. After Rose died. After the cleanup, the handover, the shifting, the end of war, the age of the Renegade.
"Well?"
All too quickly, Garnet drags her out of her musings, pulling her back to the surface. Her breath catches.
Garnet's gaze drags across her skin, a palpable weight: she's staring at her like she can see, see all of Pearl's jumbled insides and the way she's trembling because of who-knows-what. Presses her into the rawness of the moment until nothing else is real, only the still embers of the cigarette and them, the two of them.
It's funny, she'd been the one who'd asked for it — but it feels as if Garnet is the one daring her now.
Waiting.
Pearl raises the cigarette up to her lips, inhales. The burning smoke drags through her lungs. It sits on her tongue, dry and dusty and bitter.
(And, look, this is the world she balances between her fingers, this small white stick of lung cancer that glows, a spot of red in this night — her lips where Garnet's had been moments ago.
It tastes like her.)
The smoke spills, drifting.
She's still staring.
"Told you I can," she says under her breath, indigance lost on the way Garnet hasn't stopped looking at her lips. She hasn't stopped looking at hers, either. "Told you I haven't forgotten," she mutters weakly, as Garnet steps into her space to pluck the cigarette back, crushing the butt in one fluid motion.
She doesn't step back.
"Remember what happens next?" Garnet asks, low. Head tilted over. Tall strong big. Her hand hovers in the tight space between them, skimming her lapels. Pearl's breath shudders, biting her lips — she shouldn't, they shouldn't, but —
"Remind me?"
+)
Beneath the dim lights of the back alley, flashing neon signs that read closed and 50% off!! and - here's a funny one - adults only, they stagnate.
Stagnate, as in Pearl's fingers draw lazy circles on Garnet's skin, almost entirely slumped over her shoulder from where she's perched on her leg.
Stagnate, as in Garnet does nothing but hum in response, keeping her held against the gritty brick walls of the building.
Stagnate, as in the world hasn't stopped but maybe we have. Bones liquified. Caught in their own bubble, if only for a moment.
(The truth is that they don't have time for this — they never do — but here they are, anyway. Like always.)
They had been kissing moments ago. Garnet still tastes Pearl on her lips; still tastes the ocean. Salt and seawater and loneliness. The aftertaste of smoke. She kisses like the ocean, too. Like avalanches that crash down and fade into lapping waves, anger underbellied by a softness even the streets hadn't been able to calcify.
"Remember now?" Garnet prods again, just to tease. It's funny to see the way Pearl flushes all over, apple-cheeked and full of fight. She hasn't changed at all, despite what she likes to claim. She's still Pearl: easily bruised, easily flustered, easy to love.
It doesn't go exactly as planned. It must be Garnet's turn to blush — an exceedingly rare happening these days, truly — because 'Never forgot' is all the answer she gets, mumbled into her shoulder from where her forehead rests. Pearl's still a little out of it, clearly. It's a good thing. She won't see the dusting of red on her cheeks, for one.
It'd do good to keep her that way.
Very carefully, she nudges her head off. Pearl blinks, too confused to protest. "Wha—"
Ever suave, Garnet kisses her again.
iii. things you didn't say at all
Times shift. Things change. Gems change: it isn't about the forms you phase through but the nonexistent heart that pulses beneath it, the things you know. The catalogue of memories revolving in the nonexistent brain and which ones you choose to keep at front. Pearl knows she's changed, for one — she's gotten better at using human analogies. Hearts. Brains. Organs.
It's a thing about living as long as she does. You can't help but pick up things along the way, no matter how unpractical it seems. Phrases like my heart hurts. Things like aging. She hasn't, not physically — isn't supposed to at all, really — but maybe Pearl has become a little more human than necessary these past years, because she can't find another explanation for the growing ache in her shoulders.
(She could say loneliness, too. Humans, after all, are infinitely more prone to it than pearls are meant to be. She'd be lying, then, though.
The loneliness had been hers from the very start.
Pearl's always been one from the odd bunch.)
Pearl barely registers how the months fly away, these days, but still notices this: the way her joints seem to creak louder. The growing ache in her shoulders. Her swordwork, arcs falling with mellowed agression, in a way she would've overdone a century ago, in a way she wouldn't have attempted at all a century before that.
How Garnet doesn't look her in the eye anymore.
It should be okay.
(It isn't.)
WHAT THE FUCK IS NONCHALANT 😭😭😭 i was built to take a sword through my chest for you

ii. things you said through your teeth
pt.2 of the things you said saga // pearlnet through the years, 1195 words :]

:
This is what it all comes down to: Pearl loves Garnet. But there are things that run deeper and ache rawer; things called devotion and reverence and she taught me how to use a sword and tried to set me free before I ever wanted it for myself.
Things like, I loved her more than I thought I could love.
Things like, I would do anything for her.
(I still do everything for her.)
Pearl loves Garnet, but she adored Rose. Adores her still, even in her death.
Had Garnet loved herself any less, she would have loved Pearl, too.
