Wedding Dress Keepsake Quilt

I have to admit, I was a little nervous when my friend asked me to consider making a quilt from her wedding dress.  She said she had given it a lot of thought and that is what she wanted to do with it.  She had two boys, so it would not be worn again.  She had thought about selling it, or keeping it packed away, but instead, she thought, why not make it into a quilt that she could look at everyday?  While our boys were on a play date whooping and hollering over video games, we planned it out.  A small, simple mini-quilt that would fit on her bedroom wall.  I searched for a compatible fabric that wouldn’t steal the show, but would add contrast to the beautiful cream silk dress fabric.

When it came time to get started, I had to look at myself in the mirror, take a huge breath, and tell myself that I could do this and I wasn’t going to ruin this for her.  With that, a few clips and the project was underway.

The quilt actually came together quite nicely.  I chose to use the delicate paisley fabric for the star and let the cream silk dress fabric shine brightly as the larger background.  A little bit of light blue and beige toile was used for the hand-sewn binding.  

My friend loves her new mini-quilt!  She loves looking at it on her wall every morning, and being reminded of her special day with her husband.  I am pleased with it too, and thankful that she trusted me with her brilliant idea.
