she's used to the quick witted banter that they always managed to brush off. words thrown carelessly back and forth for years, some hitting harder than others, but still with a mutual understanding of the lines they would never cross. but now, after everything they had gone through -- this feels different, as it's hurled at her with a vitriol she isn't used to. her concerns now justified -- reflected by his new black suit sprawled across every front page paper, he had changed.

within a breath, her worst fear becomes true, as he echoes a voice she had spent her life trying to drown out. years of desperate attempts to ensure he would never see her the way she had been conditioned to see herself immediately reveal themselves to have been to no avail. suddenly she feels small and inept -- shallow and useless, but there's nowhere to hide. his brown eyes cold and unfamiliar, it takes everything she has not to crumble under the heavy weight of his hardened gaze.

she stares at the ground, resisting the urge to curl inside of herself and disappear. her voice lacks its usual bravado, but still carries conviction, as she finally glances up. "don't punish me for trying to be your friend, peter. you can't keep blaming me for wanting different things. not when you've never been honest with me."

his words come out on impulse, a cold snap, timbre callous and ruthless ... after all this time, peter knows how to hit mary jane where it hurts -- he's taken note of all of her insecurities, sworn to handle them with caution, attempting to only ever erase them from her mind. even with how volatile things had gotten between them in the past, it was a line he'd never cross: until now.

he wont reflect on this moment until later. for now, he acts on instinct, so casually cruel, devoid of any typical peter parker traits. he's numb to her retort, face blank. the black spandex tucked under his clothes infects his thoughts, weaponizing everything he knows, pushing away those he cares about the most until there is nothing left for him.

one last final push, his jaw clenches : a sarcastic laugh. " really, mary jane? you want me to be honest with you? that is a joke. how ... no, why would i ever trust you with anything? you don't even care about anyone but yourself. "

he feels worse than he looks, though dark circles and scattered bruises do no favors. peter wears it on his face: another late night, filled with crooks that just lead to more dead ends. harry has always been good at reading him, and peter's always been bad at lying ... there's a newfound relief now that there's no secret identities. spider-man 2 spoilers: some lil details about my insomniac verse below. personals dni

peter does not take a break from being spider-man, as suggested, though he does feel comfortable taking more time off since he's confident in miles.

spider-man is about helping out the little guy, and that doesn't stop at peter. after the end of the second game, he does revamp the emily may foundation for harry, but lets him take over when he's better. ( depending on what harry i write with / if they go that direction with him, otherwise he does not revamp it. ) he helps out here and there, but he starts a teaching job at midtown high as his main source of income, as he'd rather make a direct impact on kids.
