Walking home across the bridge
Yuhan Wang Spring 2026
It is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but in ourselves.
— William Shakespeare
I left the house a month ago
but I didn’t really leave.
My shoes still know the floor,
my shirts still hang
like they’re waiting for me
to come back tired.
I tell myself it’s temporary
that boxes can wait.
Because if my things are still there,
in that room,
then the room still knows my name.
If my bed remembers my weight,
if the walls still hold my breath,
then some small part of me
wasn’t evicted.
I call it my room
because I need something
to still be mine.
Because moving everything out
would mean admitting
I don’t belong there anymore
and I’m not ready
to let the house forget me.
Aria Aber, from Hard Damage; “Rilke and I”
