The new modern: Reinventing Vietnamese art with traditional techniques
Dao time: traditional herbal medicine of the Dao tribe in Vietnam
in the Ta Phin hills, in Vietnam, close to the Chinese border. Sapa, an ethereal mountain region in the clouds and hub for trekking (hiking), looked pretty, and I had heard rumours of amazing herbal baths. The Dao tribe (pronounced Dzao) are known for these baths, which are a culmination of 200 years of medicine handing down from mother to daughter. The tribe use around 100 herbs from the local…

Remount: on Rene Ricard
This week I got out for the protests and I’m so happy I did, even if my foot is very cranky about it… but since I didn’t write here’s an oldie but a goodie from 2014. The first quote made me think of the relationship artits have to these trying times, as it came up in my meditation group how our particular practice- founded by Thích Nhất Hạnh- was forged in the conflict of the Vietnam War and so…

Enchanted objects
I went away last weekend to Montreal to try and find some sense in the world. I’ve been reading about spiritualist Annie Besant for the last couple of weeks, who was an activist and theosopher, in a wonderful book by Jennifer Higgie, The Other Side. Besant was arrested for promoting a pro-birth control booklet by Charles Knowlton- The Fruits of Philosophy- which said that the working class would…

Painting with beads: Liza Lou
I recently stopped into Lehman Maupin to see the new Liza Lou show. I’ve been a fan for many years after first seeing photos of Kitchen in a book in college. Since moving to NYC I’ve now seen 3 of her shows- Kitchen in person at the Whitney (for more on that see here), as well as two separate shows at Lehman Maupin itself. The thing that has also drawn me to Lou is her amazing sense of place as…

The Intersection of Art, Spiritualism, and the Mystical Tree
I got a new book out of the community art event I attended by the artist collective Hilda’s Ghost at the Folk Art Museum in New York city a couple months ago. It’s called The Other Side by Jennifer Higgie, and it is a history of artists working hand in hand with spirit, either by channelling spirits directly or by creating on paper a tangible version of their inner worlds. They are appearing side…
Tree of Life
Words divined wisely: connections and insights from Contemporary art to Shaker art in collaboration with spirit by Hilma's Ghost.
“Not everything is as it seems right now. You are unsure as to which way to go next. It feels uncomfortable to be so unsure, but you must make a decision because standing still or remaining in place is not an option. Make your choice.” 2021, Acrylic and flash on canvas, 60 x 48 inches ABSTRACT FUTURES TAROT | 2021 by Hilma’s Ghost I went to an art workshop created by Hilma’s Ghost yesterday,…
Bruised Peaches
This week, on Friday, I’ll be at The Bruised Peach Festival at Rubulad in Brooklyn. This is the second time I’ll be showing there- it’s an art and music festival run by the inimitable Elly Kace. Elly is a force, I met her as an opera singer before the pandemic and during it she pivoted, working on opera as film, with her film company Frisson Films. She’s steadily commissioned me to create for…

The Khmer Empire's Healthcare Legacy: Unveiling Ancient Healing Wisdom at Banteay Srey Spa in Cambodia
In Cambodia I decided to actively support business’ that supported the local economy (there’s a lot of Chinese companies that just take money out of the country.) There was genocide in Cambodia in the 1970s in which around 2 million of people died and the repercussions are still felt today. There are not many people I met over 40- even in the big cities. I found a company, Banteay Srey Spa, ran…

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month
Every once in a while, I would say once a year really, as Psoriasis awareness month rolls, I switch from art to write about something that impacts me personally, Psoriasis. My Psoriasis got really bad after I had metal screws put in my heel after surgery, which did get a lot better after I had an additional surgery to take 3 of them out, but during the course of these last 2 years I’ve tried 3…
The Lost Lakes of Phnom PehnThe company I booked cut right to the heart of the matter: Boeung Kak Lake. We visited the fences around it. This used to be a lake right in the centre of Phnom Pehn, that in 2007, to protests, was filled with sand by developers so that they could create luxury flats. The locals, many who had built business' there, and owned homes there, were offered $8,500 OR land 20km away that wasn't well connected to electricity, roads, plumbing OR $500 and a flat in the new development in 5 years time. They couldn't afford new homes in Phnom Pehn for $8500.The Lost Lakes of Phnom PehnThe activist’s strategy was to "put women on the frontline to show a “gentle” face and prevent violence. But it was wishful thinking. The women [] have been kicked, manhandled, threatened and jailed, one of many land battles globally where women are bearing the brunt of the crackdown on protesters. “We are mostly women because we are more gentle so we face less violence. This is our strategy,” said Im Srey Touch, a 42-year-old activist from Boeung Kak Lake."*The Lost Lakes of Phnom PehnThe company I booked cut right to the heart of the matter: Boeung Kak Lake. Pipilotti Rist
This last month I’ve seen both the Pipilotti Rist exhibitions in NYC, simultaneously at Hauser & Worth and Luhring Augustine in their Chelsea galleries. Rist is an incredibly inspiring artist, she is very theatrical in her work- telling untold stories, that you feel like if you stick around for enough, you might just hear the narrative whisper in your ear. Her work is part installation, part…

(it's all) Snakes and Ladders
This last year can accurately be described as a doozy. Christmas Eve I played a candy version of Snakes and Ladders with my niece, and witnessed first hand the disapointment of slipping backwards along a snake again. This year has been one hell of a game. After feeling like I was healing my foot after a calcaneous fracture, my mobility suddenly got worst- culminating with not being able to walk…
