Here’s the official redesign for the protagonist of Tales From the Night Shift. While it isn’t a complete departure from her original design, and I think it does a much better job of conveying who she is, not just through her appearance, but through the contrast between who she used to be and who she has become. Having her present self in the foreground while her younger self remains in the background is a simple but meaningful way of showing the progression in terms of her story, whether good or bad.
It reminds me of the old cross-dissolves you’d see in older films, where one image gently blends into the next. The way the two versions of her are presented makes it genuinely feel like you’re catching a glimpse into the past while still being firmly rooted in the present. It gives the piece a quiet, reflective quality, almost like you’re looking through a memory rather than simply comparing two designs, and I think that adds a great deal to its overall presentation, without having to spell it out or give too much away from the actual written story.
I’m genuinely thrilled with how this piece turned out. It came out even better than I had hoped, and I have to thank the artist once again for creating such a wonderful piece and, in my opinion, such a perfect representation of my protagonist. It’s difficult to put into words just how appreciative I am of the work they put into bringing this redesign to life.
I could keep throwing compliments at them all day, but I honestly don’t think they would fully convey the amount of excitement and appreciation I have for this piece. There comes a point where words stop doing the feeling justice, yet here I am trying anyway, because I feel a work of this caliber deserves every bit of praise I can give it.
